THE THIRD
'brother' has no meaning

―――

keir and mirella had made their way down the corridors in a painful silence. striking up any sort of conversation would only anger his sister, so ky knew to stay quiet as he listened to the soft sounds of his feet on the carpet floors. it wasn't until those soft sounds turned heavy against a tiled floor that he realised where they'd come to a stop.

inside the infirmary, there were rows and rows of books lining the shelves. medical supplies was also shoved neatly into every corner, but ky knew none of it would help his brother. not now. no matter how detailed the books were or how advanced the medical supplies was, the doctors would never be able to find out what was wrong with him.

the curtain was pulled around the bed where rowan laid, but keir could already picture the slowing breaths. the crown prince could picture the way his brother's chest rose and fell in painful strides, all because ky hadn't been able to think clearly. he was to blame for this and that was all the prince could comprehend in those moments.

"princess reese has already left," the doctor was telling mirella. at some point, keir's sister had already dove into conversation with the doctor they constantly had on staff for rowan.

"there's nothing you can do, is there?" mir asked softly. keir couldn't remember the last time her voice had sounded so weak.

"i've ran every test i can think of," the doctor said, "it's the same as it always is. there's nothing. his body simply doesn't seem to be able to sustain itself and its reaching the end of its rope."

while he listened to the doctor's words, keir pulled back the curtain, revealing his brother, covered in the eerily white hospital-styled sheets. his face was pale, his fingers twitching every now and then the only sign that he wasn't gone yet. even the breaths of the younger prince were too soft for keir to see the rising and falling of his chest this time around.

taking a deep breath, keir was kneeling at his side, thankful that the curtain still blocked mirella and the doctor's view of him. ky bent over his brother's body, placing a head on his forehead as if he were feeling for a temperature. "i'll fix this," keir said softly, watching his hand turn red against his brother's skin. "i always do."

once his hand returned to its normal colour, keir was stepping away. burying his hands in the pockets of his suit jacket, he was walking away from the bed and heading for the door.

"you're leaving already, aren't you?" mir said, her tone a mix of disbelief and shock.

but keir didn't answer as he pushed his way back out the door.
