Fame Bonus Chapter: A Decision

~Austin~

"How long do you have to wait?" I asked.

"It said five minutes," Maybelle said as she continued pacing our bedroom, something she had been doing ever since she stepped out of the washroom.

I watched her for a few more moments before asking, "Why don't you come sit down?"

"I can't," Maybelle said. "I'm too antsy to know the results. I need to keep myself busy. How long has it been?"

"Since you walked out of the washroom?" I asked. "It hasn't even been a minute yet."

Maybelle sighed heavily before she finally sat down beside me on the bed. "I don't think I've ever been this nervous for something before."

"Me too," I said. "And I do get nervous sometimes when I have to perform in front of a large crowd. But this... Is way different."

"Yeah, it is," Maybelle said quietly.

Maybelle had been a bit quiet ever since she realized her period was late and that there was a very good chance she could be pregnant. She always said that she would love to have kids but now that there was a chance of that happening, she didn't seem too excited about it.

I gently held onto her hand. "Are you okay?"

       "Yeah, I'm fine," Maybelle said.

"Are you sure?" I asked. "Because you've been very quiet since you told me you might be pregnant."

"I really am fine," she said. "It's just..." She waited a few moments before continuing. "Ever since we got married... Actually, ever since we got engaged, the media has been so concerned about us. It's just scoop after scoop and we can barely step out of the house without being bombarded by paparazzi. It's stressful enough as it is. I don't know if I'll be able to handle it if I really am pregnant."

"And what about afterwards?" I asked.

Maybelle furrowed her eyebrows. "What do you mean?"

"I'm not going to lie," I said. "Growing up in the spotlight... It's absolute hell. It's hard to have a normal childhood because the paparazzi and other people on the media are so concerned about you're life. And there's definitely no such thing as privacy when it comes to celebrities and kids of celebrities. If you are pregnant, the paparazzi won't stop after you give birth. It will probably get worse with everyone wanting to be the first one to get a picture."

"So... What are we going to do?" Maybelle asked.

"We don't have to think of that right now," I said.

"But we're going to have to in less than five minutes when we find out the answer."

       "Yes, but not know."

Maybelle sighed once again before getting up and going back to pacing the room. "What if I am pregnant and I can't handle the stress of the paparazzi all up in my face? Does that mean I can never leave the house?"

"Uh, you're going to have to once you go into labour."

Maybelle glared at me. "I don't have to do anything. And there's this thing called home births. That will certainly be a step up from where I was born."

"Where were you born?" I asked.

       "In my family's barn."

       "Of course you were."

"Are you... are you stereotyping me?"

"I would say no but honestly, yeah."

Maybelle walked over to the bed and grabbed one of the pillows before hitting me with it a few times. She would have hit me more but I grabbed the pillow and took it away from her.

"Wow, Trent was right," I said. "He warned me on my and your wedding day that you're a pillow hitter. I should have taken the proper precautions and just made sure we didn't have any pillows in the house."

"Trent can suck an egg for all I care."

"Oh, come on, he's not that bad."

"You're only saying that because he's not your brother. He's so annoying. And childish. Do you know how many times he kept doing that stupid 'Maybelle and Austin sitting in a tree' thing?"

       "K-I-S-S-I-N-G."

       "Oh, wow you're hilarious."

       "Thanks, I try."

Maybelle sat back down on the bed. "How long has it been now?"

       "I don't know. I'm not a timer. Or a clock."

Maybelle groaned. "I don't think I can handle waiting anymore."

I scooted closer to her. "I know how we can pass time."

"What? No. If I'm not pregnant, that will make me pregnant."

"What? I wasn't talking about sex. And sex doesn't always result in pregnancy. I was just talking about kissing. Lots of kissing."

"Or, and here's an idea," Maybelle said. "You can get me some food from the kitchen."

"Sure," I said. "Let me just go cook up some bacon real quick."

Maybelle, once again, glared at me. "You're not funny."

"Uh, just a few moments ago, you called me hilarious."

       "That was sarcasm."

"You weren't clear enough. But I will go get you food if you want some."

"No bacon, Austin. You know that."

I sighed. "I just want bacon."

"Go ahead. I'm not stopping you. I'm just not going to have any."

Maybelle grabbed her phone from off her nightstand to check the time. "I don't even remember when I went in there. You think it has been five minutes?"

I shrugged. "I could have been. There's only one way to check."

Maybelle hesitated before getting off of the bed and walking to the washroom. When she walked out, she was holding the pregnancy test but she didn't tell me what it said.

       "So?" I asked.

"I didn't look yet," Maybelle said. "I'm too nervous." She handed it to me. "You look at it."

"What?" I asked. "I don't want to do it either. I'm nervous too."

"But you're not the one carrying the possible baby."

"Exactly. If I'm not carrying it, why should I look?"

"Please, Austin?" Maybelle asked, looking at me with wide eyes that I couldn't say no to.

I sighed and took the pregnancy from her outstretched hand. It took a few moments for me to look down at it and even when I did, I didn't know the answer. "Yeah, I have no idea what this means," I said.

       "Well, what does it say?"

       "It has two lines."

Maybelle was silent for a bit. "What?" she asked in a quiet voice.

"There are two lines," I said. "So... What does it mean?"

"It's positive," Maybelle said, still in a quiet voice. "I'm... I'm pregnant." After all this time of worrying, she finally broke into a smile. "I'm pregnant, Austin!"

I couldn't help but smile too, getting up from the bed and pulling her into a hug. When I pulled away, I cupped her face in my hands before giving her a soft kiss. I smiled wider at her. "I can't believe it," I said. "You're actually pregnant."

"Yeah," Maybelle said, the smile staying on her face. "We're going to have a baby. And... Were you serious? About how hard it is growing up in the spotlight?"

"Yeah," I said. "It's a pain. You can even ask Cameron. I loved what I did but at the same time... I hated how stressful it was. My mother's death was what ultimately led to my drinking but being in the spotlight at a young age pushed me towards it as well. Why?"

"Do you think it's possible to make sure nobody knows," Maybelle said. "Keep it a secret from the world?"

"If that's what you want, we can try," I said. "We won't know how it will go but we can try."
