"Daniel," I asked, "Daniel, what is it?"

There was no answer. He sat there, deathly still, as if struck by lightning. I didn't have the courage enough to even snatch the paper from his hands, afraid that the statue may crumble to dust.

"Why won't you answer me? Why won't anybody else tell me anything?" I wailed, looking between the doctor, Mrs Waters and my mother.

It had been a week since Daniel had been discharged and the doctor himself had brought in his biopsy reports. As far as I could see from the expression on her face, Mrs Waters was just a mirror image of her son, dumb, frozen. My mother had a hand on her shoulder and another over her mouth as I could see her desperately fighting her emotions.

"Daniel," I turned to him, holding him by the shoulders and shaking him in my anxiety. "Daniel, please speak. This silence is killing me more than if you would have stabbed me."

He extended the papers to me but his hands were shaking so badly that it dropped on the bed.

I carefully unfolded the report, afraid of what I would find there.

GLIOBLASTOMA MULTIFORME

The words were enough to make the world spin around me. The floor was slipping from under my feet as I could see my entire universe-shattering before my eyes. All that we had done, after all the struggles, it was simply cruel and insane of fate to put that on us.

"It's one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer. I'm sorry but that's what it is plainly..."

"W...which stage is it?"

"Look, Miss Phoebe, it's serious but he has a few things going. Firstly he's young, just twenty. He's healthy, determined, and while technically we had to type it as grade four, it is a borderline grade three by grade four tumour, so not the worst of the worst, I assure you," Doctor Strong replied.

"But that doesn't mean I'm not going to die, is it?" Daniel snapped back from his dazed state.

"I'll discuss with Doctor Timmerman. Robert is an MD and he, with Doctor Vaughan will deal with the radiation and chemotherapy and everything else to be considered," he avoided the question.

None of what they were saying entered my head as my vision was becoming hazy and there was this strange humming in my ears till I let out a scream and everything faded into darkness for me.
