Valentina Sanchez was the richest person in the Outer Banks.

Well, no. Not really. Not now, at least. Complicated story, actually. A couple years ago, Val's parents both died in a tragic boating accident, and—um, yeah, you can probably get the picture. Those millions of dollars they left solely to Val would be given to her when she turns the ripe age of eighteen. It was only a year and a half till she would be a legal adult, and only then would she be the richest person in the Outer Banks.

Although Val Sanchez was not currently the richest person in the Outer Banks, she sure as hell acted like it. A "kook princess," they called her. Wearing a pearl necklace hanging around her neck and a her infamous Cartier bracelet, Valentina could walk in a room and practically smell like money (which has been a serious ongoing rumor going around The Cut).

This money was partly hers, in which her aunt and uncle from California gave to her as sympathy, but the money was also partly Ward Cameron's. As a former close friend of Val's deceased parents, Ward offered to let Val stay in his home, acting essentially as her foster parent until she turned eighteen. Living with the Camerons meant living with Ward's children, which included Sarah and Rafe—making Val just another kook.

Money wasn't everything to Val. Sure, it helped. Getting raised without having to starve every day or to not own any clothing is something that she would never complain about. But she wanted more meaning to life than just some pieces of paper that were handed to her. So, she rebelled.

Quickly, the nickname for Val that the majority of the Island Club members used was the "bad girl." She showed up drunk out of her mind anywhere and everywhere, smoked weed in the bathrooms at any public event, slept with half of the boys on the island, sorta bought a fake I.D., and—well, you probably get the picture. Val wanted a high that wasn't just money, and if it be alcohol, weed, or sex, then so it be.

For Val, this one summer was supposed to be just alcohol and fun. Distractions upon distractions. But once she thinks that she's finally completely distracted, here comes bouncing along a random hookup that Val just can't stop thinking about. The thoughts about it almost nags her every day. And he's a goddamn pogue, too. How disgusting.

Little did she know that this pogue would change her life from then on.

And maybe, possibly, for the better.
