"Didn't you close it last night?"

🌀

The sharp rays of the sun fell on Ruhi's closed eyes. She opened her eyes and was faced with a blue surrounding. Her face scrunched up in confusion until she looked above her. She had somehow snuggled close to Ritesh and he was hugging her to her chest as she felt his arm around her waist. She blushed feeling their close proximity.

The brown wallpaper of the room shined brightly under the sunlight streaming in through the window. Trying hard to not disturb Ritesh, she got up as silently as she could. She tiptoed out of the room and found Aditya standing in front of the door. Ruhi looked at the digital clock on the side table. 6:03

"I was about to call you," said Aditya, handing her a piece of paper.

Ruhi read the writings on it.

Ritesh, we have to go now. Our parents didn't give us permission to stay overnight but we stayed anyway. Now, we have to return before they discover we are not home.

-Malhotra siblings

"Seriously? Malhotra siblings?" Ruhi waved the paper under his nose.

"He would understand nevertheless." He took the paper from her hand, put it on the glass table in the middle of the sofas and walked towards the door. They slipped out of the door, slyly and made a run for it. It took them only a few minutes to reach Luís de Menezes Road from Fontainhas.

Upon reaching their house, they peered through the window to see if their parents were awake or not.

They were indeed awake but were yet to notice the absence of their children. They had just woken up and were heading towards the washroom to freshen up.

"Now what?" Aditya was visibly panicking.

"We have to get in through the window," said Ruhi.

"Didn't you close it last night?"

"I forgot." Ruhi gave him an apologetic smile.

"Very good." He nodded and started walking to the back of the house. The back and sides of the garden were covered with untamed garden. It looked like a mini jungle. Their own little jungle.

"Now what?" Aditya asked, peering at the window above their head.

Ruhi didn't answer instead started climbing a tree. Aditya looked at her, astound. Ruhi upon reaching the lowest branch which was also the longest and thickest one, started walking on it. Once reaching quite near the window, she jumped down on the cornice under the window. Her hands tightly grabbed on the sill and putting all her weight on her hands, she pulled herself up and slid into the room through the open window.

She wiped her forehead with the back of her palm. Walking upto the window, she peered outside to see a very stunned Aditya looking at her. She beckoned him up using hand gestures with an irritated face.

Aditya immediately shook his head, rapidly. Ruhi face-palmed. She mouthed, "If you don't come up and mom and dad, you will be as good as dead."

Aditya gulped and seemed to contemplate on the two deadly options. At last feeling that his life wasn't that precious enough and he would rather fall to death than be caught by his parents, he, with extremely shaky hands started climbing the tree.

He was always the shy and quiet one between the two and never ever defied his parents until last night, thanks to his sister. Ruhi was quiet but not so quiet. She was a nightmare dressed as an angel and could scare the living light out of someone.

Aditya with great difficulties at last reached the branch. Taking huge amount of oxygen, he again resumes his adventure. Upon reaching the place where he would have to jump, he looked like he was going to faint. Ruhi looked quite concerned unsure whether she made the wise decision by forcing Aditya to come up. But Aditya did jump down and nearly missed his steps and was about to fall. Ruhi gasped. But thankfully, he at the very last moment caught his balance. He stood there wide eyed and panting, heavily. He then placed his hands on the sill of the window. When he tried to pull himself up, he lost his balance and was about to fall when Ruhi caught his hand. She pulled him in by his shirt. Aditya tumbled in and fell over Ruhi. They both grunted at the harsh impact.

"What happened?" They heard their mother's booming voice from downstairs.

"Nothing, maa," Aditya answered.

Ruhi pushed Aditya off of her and got up quickly.

"You clumsy thing," grumbled her sister. "Quickly disarray the bed and get changed into the pyjamas."

She pulled their pyjamas out of the wardrobe and threw his brother's towards him, which hit him in the face.

"Jeez Piku..." Aditya quickly got changed into his pyjama while his sister made the beds look as if people had slept on it and then got into her own pyjama.

When everything looked presentable, they both collapsed on their respective beds in exhaustion.

"That was a long day," commented Ruhi, gazing at the ceiling.
