The sun was starting to set over the horizon and Hazel's and Alex still hadn't found shelter. Hazel was starting to worry as nightfall approached and her ankle, now numb, needed rest.

"Hey, a cabin," Alex rasped and feebly pointed to the tiny wooden structure no bigger than a living room.

"It has been one day, you can't be dead tired already," hazel reasoned.

"Hey, I won't say anything about your exhaustion if you say nothing about mine," Alex quieted her and hazel nodded.

Alex opened the door to the cabin and hazel collapsed on in of the two beds that took up three quarters of the room.

"Go to sleep, we start early tomorrow for a permanent shelter," Hazel sighed and laid her bag next to her bed.

"Wait, aren't we going to help fight off the enemy?!" Alex asked with shock.

"No! Mom and Dad told us to survive, and that is what we will do. No buts," Hazel made clear before turning her back to him and letting sleep take over.

Hazel was awoken by a noise outside. Her head shot up and she looked up out the window but kept her head down. She saw a shadow dart by and she grabbed her gun. Her bed was closer to the door and she stood up with the gun ready.

The door creaked open and Hazel shouted, "stop!"

The person shouted and fell back.

Hazel rushed forward and slammed him against the wall.

"Hazel! Hazel! It's Alex! Calm down, I just went to use the bathroom geez! When did you bring a gun?!" The person said and hazel saw Alex frozen with fear.

"Never, ever, do that again," Hazel growled and let him go.

"Why did you take dad's guns?!" Alex exclaimed.

"I could have killed you you moron!" Hazel said with outrage.

"You still haven't answered my question," Alex shouted and hazel let her guard down.

Just in case," Hazel sighed, "now go to bed."

Hazel calmed down and tucked under the covers.

She woke up to the early morning sun in her eyes. Where am I?She thought with confusion before yesterday's events came back to her. The ship. The woods. The cabin. Her head shot off the pillow and she stood up. Her stomach growled and she looked into her bag. She grabbed a package of crackers and ate then quickly before waking up Alex.

Alex groaned and blinked open his eyes.

"Hazel? Where are we?" He yawned and sat up.

"The cabin," she responded.

Alex's smile dropped as he looked out the window, "oh right. Well, let's go."

He stood up and put on his shoes.

"Someone's eager to go," Hazel giggled.

"Yeah, this cabin actually smells like grandma's house," Alex replied and the two siblings laughed.

Hazel wondered how humor could spawn in a time of crisis and death where most humans were most likely getting killed off. She shrugged it off mentally and put on a hat and gloves. She kept her gun in her coat pocket for easy access and walked out into the crispy air. The first frost had hit, early for the time of year.

Hazel walked opposite the direction of the sun, the warm rays heating her back. Her and Alex walked in silence, neither having anything to say. A bird cooed in a tree and hazel nearly shot its head off.

"Hey! Put the gun down psycho lady. Just a bird," Alex said with worry.

Hazel halted at the tree branches and lowered her gun. A twig snapped behind her and hazel whirled around. The face of a person met her.

"Hey!" Hazel's shouted and held the gun to his chest.

The guy held up his arms and stared at the gun.

"Ok, ok calm down. I'm not here to hurt or kill you, but don't make me change my mind," he said and looked hazel in the eyes.

"Hazel," Alex rested his hand on her shoulder.

"He doesn't seem that trustworthy Alex," Hazel growled and glared at him.

"Hazel is it? Listen to the kid. Please. I am from this earth, trust me," he had messed up light brown hair and looked to be about a year older than hazel.

Hazel slowly lowered the gun but kept it in a ready position. I'm watching you, don't even think about it.

"Who are you?" Hazel asked him, "how the hell did you find us?"

"Ok first off-"

"Answer me or find out the hard way. And don't think I won't shoot, I am not one to test," Hazel shouted and held the gun up.

The guy raised his arms and his eyes widened, "ok, you mean business. Will I am Jacob. You are hazel, right?"

"And I'm Alex," Alex spoke up before hazel shot him down with a sideways glance.

"Why are you here jake?" Hazel questioned him and circled him.

"Jacob. And most likely the same reason as you," Jacob responded and lowered his arms more comfortably to his sides.

"To stop the invaders?" Alex asked.

Ack! Alex shut up! Hazel elbowed his rib and Alex held his breath.

"Yes actually," Jacob responded and looked at hazel with his chestnut eyes.

"Alex! We are not! We are looking for a permanent shelter," Hazel turned back to Jacob, "we are from Coast Town Massachusetts . And we were sent to survive and that is what we will do."

"Great, now we know each other, now can you come with me?" Jacob asked.

"Why do you want us?" Hazel asked in disbelief.

"It will be good to have some company on my quest or journey or whatever. In from Winterville, Massachusetts , next town over," Jacob responded, "so, what do you say?"

Hazel exchanged a glance with Alex, "one second."

Hazel huddled with Alex and turned around.

"I say yes," Alex said almost immediately.

"You are always to quick to trust," Hazel's reasoned.

"I just have a feeling we can trust This guy," Alex persisted.

"I don't know," Hazel felt anxious and quickly glanced at him, "oh Alright. We'll give him one chance. Only one. Got it?"

Alex smiled and nodded.

"Welcome to the team man," Alex held his hand up to Jacob for a high five.

Jacob smiled and high-fived him.

"So, what's the plan?" Hazel smiled and placed her hands on her hips.

"Regain strength, it will take a while but it will be key," Jacob sighed and ran a hand through his hair.

Hazel nodded, "Well, once we can trust you for sure I will give you something."

"What will that something be?" Jacob raised an eyebrow and smirked.

Hazel frowned, Really? Ugh, high schoolers.

"If I told you, who is to say you wouldn't use it against us?" Hazel snapped back and grinned.

"Fair enough. I except. But trust me, I can be trusted," Jacob smiled.

"I'll just have to trust you on that one," Alex laughed, but no one else did.

Alex's face flushed red and he shut up. Ha! He totally embarrassed himself! But in front of who? Me? Jacob? Ehh.

"Well, the umm, cabin is over there," Alex managed to say and he nodded to the cabin.

Hazel wasn't even sure she could call it a cabin anymore. I️t was a single roomed structure.

"Cool, let's check it out," Jacob said happily and jogged to the door.

He opened the old door and hazel saw his smile drop.

"Guess you'll have to sleep on the floor," Hazel tried to lighten up the dread in the air.

"Well, i just May have to," he sighed.

Hazel looked at the beds and an idea popped into her head. Was it a good one? No, but it could work.

"We could take one of the two mattresses on one of the beds and grab a blanket and put it on the floor," Hazel offered.

"But a box spring is the only thing below it," Alex pointed out, "they are like full size beds and could fit to people."

No, absolutely not.

Hazel glared at Alex.

"What? It was a genuine idea! Plus, we don't have time to be squeamish here little mis princess, deal with it," Alex snapped.

"Who said I had to share?" Hazel growled.

"Well I'm not," Alex responded.

"If this is to much trouble I'll just sleep on the floor," Jacob spoke up.

"Jake shut up!" Hazel snapped.

"Jacob," Jacob said before go silent.

Hazel sighed with anger and inhaled a deep breath, "Alright, we don't have time to argue. Since I️ am the older sibling I️ will take responsibility and sleep on the floor."

Alex nodded and smirked, "glad that's figured out."

Hazel shot him a silencing glare and the smirk dropped from his face.
