❦ story ❦

fallenpaw was average. plain, simple, average. she was the type of cat who'd never make it big as the protagonist of a story- no special abilities, no scarring backstory, not even skills or courage.

she was the kind of cat who was barely in the background, the kind of cat who was just kind of... there. sure, she had a best friend, but what good would friends do her if she wanted to be noticed by the masses?

so she wanted to stand out. so she wanted to be different. if she wanted to do that, she'd have to take drastic measures.

one night, a certain warrior slipped the idea to her in her dreams, and she immediately took it.

the next night, she advanced. she stole away one of creststar's precious lives in her sleep. she was a leader; she would have many to spare. she yowled to awake the whole clan, to make them aware of her... minor grab for attention.

the plan was to masquerade as an intruder, a threat to the clan. that was what the dream warrior had told fallenpaw. she'd have all the attention she'd ever wanted, albeit pretending to be someone she wasn't, and only for a short while.

little did fallenpaw know she'd been tricked.

the clan had gathered, not paying heed to fallenpaw yet, and swarmed the leader's den. time passed, and creststar didn't make a sound.

more time passed, and only when the clan started to trickle out of creststar's den did fallenpaw realize how foolish she'd been to fall for the words of who she was sure by now was a dark forest warrior.

creststar wasn't with the clan cats. cloudwish, not she, was leader now, for creststar had just lost her final life.

and fallenpaw was responsible.

fallenpaw slipped down the sloped den roof, for once praying no one would notice her. the warriors and apprentices tasted the air, trying to find the trace of a scent that would lead them to her- but what would they find, as fallenpaw might as well have not existed before tonight? none would recognise her scent.

fallenpaw melted into the black shadows- they seemed to chase her and consume her, already demanding payment for her crime- and fled the camp, misty tears flooding her eyes. what kind of creature had she let herself become? what price had she paid for the attention she'd never ended up getting?
