Chapter Four (Part Two)

Mikey

I held my breath as the officer got out of his car and pulled the flashlight from his belt.

"Stay calm," I whispered to myself. "Just stay calm. Worst case scenario, you get caught and thrown in jail for the rest of your life."

I rolled down my window as he approached, the sound of his boots breaking the silence of the still night.

"License and registration," the officer said in a surprisingly low voice.

"Yes, Sir," I replied, grabbing the information from my glove box.

"Do you know why I pulled you over?" he said, as I handed him the paperwork.

"No, Sir." That's right, be as polite as possible and maybe he won't find the knife and mask under the seat.

He paused or maybe it was just my imagination. My heart pounded so intensely, I could feel it in my ears.

"Your taillight," he said. "The back right one is out."

I closed my eyes momentarily and let out an internal sigh.

The officer pointed the flashlight on my face. "Is everything okay?"

"Yes, sorry," I apologized. "I had no idea."

A crease formed across his brow as he studied my license. "Why are you out so late."

Think!

"I... Ah, I ah, I couldn't sleep," I lied.

He raised his flashlight and looked in the backseat. "So, you went for a drive at 2AM?"

I nodded. "Yeah, it helps me clear my mind."

He took a step closer to my car. "Do your parents know you're out this late?"

"My dad is a mechanic. Cars are kind of my thing. Being in one is calming." At least part of that is true.

"And he's okay with you driving around at 2AM?" The officer's voice was skeptical.

"Yeah, I mean, yes. He's cool with it." I almost felt guilty about all of the lies, almost.

The officer straightened up. "I'm going to run your license and registration. Then, we're going to give your dad a call. We'll let him know you're on your way home."

My heart sank into my stomach. "Yes, Sir."

As he walked away, I let a slew of curse words fly. Not only would I have to wait to kill Calla, I'd most likely be grounded for the rest of my life.

Several minutes later, he walked back and handed me my paperwork and driving license. "How about we make that call now?"

I swallowed the lump in my throat. "Yes, Sir."

He pulled his phone out of his pocket. "Number?"

As I listed off the digits to his cell phone, my hands started to shake. My dad would be beyond pissed. I'd be lucky if he ever let me leave the house again.

"Good evening, Sir. This is Officer Brown." He paused. "Yes, everything is fine. I'm just calling–" He paused again. "Yes, everything is fine."

Shit. I am so screwed!

"Yes, we're on County Highway B."

My hand dropped to the gear shifter. My fingers twitched as I pressed on the break with my right foot. Don't do it.

"Yes, I will provide an escort home," the office said, breaking my concentration and my confidence.

"You're welcome," he said before hanging up his phone.

Trying not to panic, I shoved the registration paperwork back into my glovebox and tossed the license on the passenger's seat.

"I'll be escorting you home," said the officer. "Your father is pretty upset."

My shoulders slumped. I am so screwed.

As if taking pity on me, he cleared his throat. "If you promise to get your light fixed before driving your car again, I'll let you off on a warning."

I forced the corners of my lips into a brief smile. "Thank you."

"You're welcome. Now, the next time you can't sleep, try finding something else to help pass the time, okay?"

"Yes, Sir," I said quietly.

"All right," he said, "Let's get you home."

"Thank you, Officer Brown," said my father with a worried scowl plastered on his face.

I stood uncomfortably between the two, letting my chin fall to my chest.

"I'll make sure this never happens again," said my father, placing a firm hand on my shoulder. "And thank you again for making sure Mikey got home safe."

The officer nodded. "That's what we're here for, Sir."

As the policeman turned and headed toward the driveway, my dad pointed toward my room. "Bed. We'll talk about this in the morning."

I'm so screwed, I thought in disgust. He's going to ground me for the next century! If I can't leave the house, how will I go through with my plan? How am I going to kill Calla Vinson?
