In the morning, we gather for breakfast, as usual, but this time, we let Oscar and Axel join us. As we eat, we hear footsteps, and Rick comes into the room. He's cleaned himself off, so there's no blood anywhere.

"Rick! How're you doing?" I ask kindly.

"I cleared out the boiler block," he says. "How are all of you?"

"We're good," Daryl says. "How many walkers were there?"

"I don't know. A dozen...two dozen," he replies. "I just came back to check on Carl and all of you."

"Rick, we can help move the bodies. You don't have to do this alone," Glenn says.

"No, I do," Rick brushes him off. He walks to where Daryl and I are sitting. "Does everyone have a gun and a knife?"

"Yeah, we're running low on ammo though," Daryl mentions.

"Maggie and I were gonna go on a run this afternoon. Found a few places where we could look for bullets and more formula," Glenn says.

"We cleared out the generator room," I add. "Axel's down there trying to fix it in case of an emergency. We're going to sweep the lower levels too."

"Good. Good." Rick turns, leaving the way he came.

"Rick!" Hershel calls, but he slams the door and walks away.

We look at each other, some people continuing to eat, others pushing their bowls away.

"Maggie and I will go on that run now," Glenn says, getting up and taking Maggie's hand.

They leave the prison briskly, and Daryl gets up. "Oscar and Carl, come with me. We're gonna scout out the lower level."

They leave, and I stand up.

"Beth, I can take her now," I say, and she hands me the baby. "I really wish she had a name. It's really annoying to have to call her 'the baby' or 'little ass-kicker' all the time."

"We'll get to that soon enough," Hershel says. "I'm going to go talk to Rick."

Once he leaves, Beth and I are alone.

"I'll clean up these dishes," she offers, stacking them.

"Just tell me when you want to switch," I say.

The baby is still sleeping, and I walk around the cell block, humming a lullaby softly.

"Deep in the meadow, under the willow. A bed of grass, a soft green pillow. Lay down your head..."

"I can take her now," Beth says after a little while.

We trade off and I go finish the dishes. Hershel and Carl come back, and I start making supper. Soon, Rick comes in the door.

"Hey," I say, smiling warmly.

"Hey," he replies.

He walks over to Hershel, who's holding the baby. Rick takes her carefully in his arms. He looks at her for a long time, smiling.

"I'm going outside," he says.

Hershel, Carl, and Beth go too. I wait inside, continuing to stir the pot of stew we're having for supper.

I hear more footsteps, and I look up from the pot.

Daryl stands in the doorway, with Carol in his arms.

"Ca...Carol?" I gasp. "But she...she..."

"She hid in a supply closet," Daryl says. "She was probably too tired to get back."

"Bring her in," I say.

We hurry into the cell block, and I pick a cell.

"Lay her down here," I say. He listens. "Man, she's tougher than I thought."

"I didn't think she had it in her," Daryl adds.

"Can you grab me a wet cloth?" I ask.

"Sure."

He leaves, returning quickly and handing me the cloth. I take it and start wiping the blood off of Carol's neck and face. She's passed out, and looks exhausted.

"When she wakes up, she's gonna need a lot of food," I say, smirking. I finish cleaning her up. "Let's let her sleep."

Daryl nods and we leave the cell. We hear people coming back into the prison and then Rick talking quietly.

As we leave the cell block, I see Rick kneeling on the floor next to a black woman with dreads. A katana lies nearby, and there's a crazed look in her eyes.

"Who the hell is this?" Daryl asks.

"Can you tell us your name?" Rick asks kindly to the woman. She doesn't respond, she only stares at us. "We'll keep this safe and sound." He holds up the katana. "And we can treat that." He motions to a bullet wound on her leg.

"I didn't ask for your help," the woman says.

"Doesn't matter. We can't let you leave."

"Rick, you're gonna want to see this," I say.

Rick follows Daryl and I into the cell block, as does everyone else. We get to Carol's cell, where she has woken up.

"Oh thank God," Rick says, pulling her into a hug.

Carol pulls away, and her eyes travel to the baby in Beth's arms.

"Oh my..." She smiles, than looks back at Rick. Her face falls and she covers her mouth. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry."

Rick hugs her again, and we stand together, happy to see that Carol's alive and well.

I look back at the gate, where the mysterious woman stands by, watching us.
