This page serves as an introduction to one of the many main characters of the story beyond what has been served in the chapters in which they've appeared so far. Light Yagami was the first and former Kira, a mass murderer and causation of genocide according to the SPK who liberated Japan of crime to the point of getting the crime rate to decline by 70% towards the end of his reign. Killed through the usage of the Death Note and from bleeding out by gunshot wounds sustained towards the end of his lifetime due to the interference of NPA officer Touta Matsuda (deceased), his status as Kira was wisely covered by the Special Provision for Kira and the Japanese Task Force, the only two law enforcement networks knowledgeable about the true identity of the original Kira.

Unknown to the world as the true Kira, his identity remains a mystery to most, making it difficult for others to understand the true motivations of Kira. However, his formation of the identity of Kira and the godlike status associated with it has mapped out the foundation of the current events of the story, undeniably planting him at the forefront of the cause of most events. Even in death, Light is relatively important to the unfolding of the current scenario even with other holders of the famed Death Note passing righteous judgment on inhabitants of the Human Realm.

Light is characterized as hardworking, talented, and a natural genius. Highly perceptive and good with problem solving, Light was and is a skilled planner and good at mapping out scenarios. Furthermore, Light was very popular among peers and adored by his family members. However, his high intelligence and constant praise from adults laid the foundation for an intense level of hubris which quickly took effect once he obtained the notebook of death. Similar to his father, Soichiro Yagami, Light Yagami has an intense, severe and almost obsessive sense of justice, but it has been warped ever since he came into contact with the Death Note. 

Light's main goal is to create a new world that is free of injustice and populated only with people whom he deems honest and kind, thus becoming the God of the New World as he terms it. Light is decisive and driven to achieve his ambitions, without faltering one bit in his beliefs. Despite knowing the criminality of murder, Light would consider his actions the ultimate "sacrifice" to help the world. Intelligent and devoid of normal conscientious repercussions other humans would be inhibited by, Light's skillful ability to manipulate the Death Note and his knowledge of the world along with the human psychology and normative understanding of justice has allowed him to remain a step ahead of his opposition.
