Jacob stared at the man that he knew as his father, Vincent McDaniels.

"I'm glad you let me come over," Vincent began.

"Like I had a choice? You would've kept harassing me if I didn't. I just wanted to get this over with."

Anger flashed in Vincent's eyes, but he stayed quiet.

"Well?" Jacob raised his hands in exasperation, "What did you want to tell me?"

"It's about your mother Jacob. I think she was murdered."

Jacob rolled his eyes at Vincent, "And who would want to murder her?"

"My sister."

Well that was a shock, even for Jacob. "You have a sister?"

"Yes. I wanted her to meet you but I guess she had other plans."

"Riiiight...like killing my mother?"

"Do you believe me?"

"I don't believe anything you say. As far as I know you're just some sick man that attacks women and has children that end up as murderers."

"My sons were just misunderstood Jacob. Besides, you shouldn't condemn them so much. They were your brothers."

Jacob didn't acknowledge that. "Listen, you told me what you thought...now please leave and don't bother me again."

"That's it? You don't care if your mother was murdered?"

"I don't know if she was murdered and even if she was...what do you expect me to do about it? I'm not a cop!"

Vincent laughed, "A cop? You think you have to be a cop to get revenge?"

"Revenge?" Jacob asked as he looked at his father in a new light. "You know I think you might be some kind of psychopath. No wonder your kids are all screwed up."

"You're my kid too Jacob."

"Not by choice."

"Listen Jacob..."

"No, you listen! I don't care what you have to say! If someone really did hurt my mom it was probably your fault somehow. Even if I did want to kill that person myself, it wouldn't matter. It's not my job to get revenge. I'll leave it up to the police. Now get out!"

"There's something else you don't know Jacob."

"Get out!" Jacob was about to start pushing Vincent out when his father's next words stopped him.

"You're not alone Jacob. You still have family. You have me and a nephew. Eva Lewis is pregnant with your brother's baby."

Jacob stopped and gasped, "What did you say? How would you even know that?"

"They found her. She's in the hospital and she's pregnant. I have friends everywhere Jacob. They keep me updated."

"Why are you telling me this?"

"So that you don't feel so alone. I know you and that girl, Joelynn, are best friends. She's Eva's cousin, right?"

Jacob didn't answer. Instead he looked away as he thought of Joelynn. She must be reeling at the news of Eva being found. A part of him ached at her absence. He was angry when he had blamed her for his mother's death. He shouldn't have but he needed someone to blame for his tragic loss. Now Joelynn was dealing with her cousin returning. Well at least that was good news for her.

"I may end up having to take care of that baby," Vincent interrupted his thoughts.

Jacob didn't expect to hear that, "What?"

"Eva can't take care of him."

"Why would you say that?"

Vincent held back his smile, "Because she's in a coma."

To say Jacob was shocked, would be an understatement, "A coma?"

"Yes. The doctors don't know when and if she'll wake up."

"A coma," Jacob repeated to himself. Joelynn must be really upset too. He thought that perhaps he should call her and see how she was doing.

"That's right, a coma. I'm your family Jacob. I'm all you have left."

Jacob shook his head, "No. That child would be the only blood relative I have and I'm only accepting him because he's related to the Lewis family. They're like family to me."

Vincent clenched his fists, trying to control his anger.

"I'm not sure why you want to suddenly have a father-son relationship with me. You were never in my life before so don't start now. I'll never accept you." Jacob turned away from Vincent.

"You're all I have left!" Vincent cried.

"And how is that my problem?"

"You're not admitting it but you're just like me Jacob. Just like your brothers too. I can help you...all you have to do is help me find your aunt."

"I've always wondered why I felt moments when I'm not myself. I'll do things and then afterward I'll feel bad about it and think, 'I wasn't raised this way. Why did I do that?' Now I know why. It's because your blood runs through me and it's tainted. You keep talking about getting revenge for my mother. How exactly? By killing my aunt? How twisted are you?"

Jacob didn't wait for Vincent to answer. He continued, "My mom wouldn't want me to do that. Even if someone had killed her. Even if you had killed her...she wouldn't want me to do something so evil. She was very religious and murder would be breaking the fifth commandment."

"Jacob there are always exceptions to the rules."

"You're right. I'll be the exception. I'll be the son you have that doesn't kill. Now get out of my house before I have the police drag your ass out."

Vincent stared at Jacob and smirked. He wasn't going to get away from him this easily. "Fine. I'll go...for now."

Vincent walked out of the house and got into his car. Maybe Jacob needed to feel as though he had no one left in the world before he followed in his father's footsteps. He picked up his phone and dialed his favorite doctor.

Meanwhile

Dr. Spencer sat in his brother's apartment trying to come to terms with what he had done. It was too late. He killed his own brother and there was no undoing that. His phone rang and he answered without checking the caller ID, "Hello?"

"Hello Dr. Colt Spencer...or are you going by Colin now?"

Dr. Spencer looked at the caller ID and grimaced. How could Vincent McDaniels have known that Colt was pretending to be Colin?

"I don't know what you're talking about," Dr. Spencer stated.

"Oh come on now...don't try to deny it. I know the truth. You're a horrible liar and besides...I saw it in your eyes last night when you set Open Heart on fire."

"Saw what?"

"The evil. The guilt. I saw it all."

"Shouldn't you be in a psych ward somewhere? How are you able to call me?"

"Oh that's easy when the current residential treatment center you're staying at goes up in flames. Things get disorganized and it's easy to slip through the cracks."

"What do you want?"

"Well now that you're pretending to be a member of the FBI, I thought you could do me a favor."

"And what would that be exactly?"

"Eva Lewis."

"Eva Lewis the reporter?"

"You heard me doc. I want Eva Lewis and you're going to bring her to me."

"How do you expect me to do that?"

"Oh I think an FBI agent such as yourself could figure it out. Considering what you did to your brother, I'd think you're pretty resourceful."

"I don't want to help you."

"I didn't ask if you wanted to. I'm telling you that you're going to. What kind of disciple are you?"

"I don't want to be one of those damned disciples anymore!"

"Oh it's much too late to turn back now. I have so much dirt on you...that you'll be sorry if you don't do as I say. Bring her to my old house in the woods by tonight. It's been abandoned but it's unlocked. I'll meet you there."

Vincent didn't give Dr. Spencer a chance to speak. He simply disconnected the call.

At the Hospital

"C'mon Eva. Wake up for me...please. Wake up. I'm sorry. For everything. For every stupid thing I did or said...I'm sorry. Please wake up."

Eva Lewis could hear her cousin speaking, but she couldn't open her eyes. It was as if her body was betraying her and refused to listen. She didn't understand what was going on or why she was still alive. She remembered seeing the truck and then everything turning dark.

Eva could hear the voices of doctors and nurses coming into her room. She wondered if her baby had survived. It was strange to her that she wasn't sure what she wanted to do with the baby while she had been abducted. Now that she knew she was still alive, she wanted to keep the life she held inside of her.

Several minutes had passed when she heard Joelynn's voice again, "Eva. I'm going downstairs to get something to eat but I'll be right back, okay?"

Eva couldn't respond.

After several minutes had passed in silence a new voice came into the room. She recognized it and she tried to force her body to move in vain.

"Hi Eva. Did you really think you could escape me? You must be crazy if you thought that. Don't worry, I'll let you sleep a little longer. If you even think about telling people what I did to you...I'll kill you and the baby. I don't care who the father is anymore."

Eva could feel someone sliding a finger down her cheek. Then his voice was whispering in her ear, "Don't worry Eva. I'll be back for you. We're not done playing yet."

She felt a soft brush of lips against her cheek. Her mind was in turmoil, a jumbled explosion of thoughts and emotions. She wanted to wake up and get the hell out of the room. Several moments of silence had passed, letting her know he had left.

"Eva? I'm back. Please wake up."

Joelynn was holding on to Eva with her right hand as her left arm was still in its cast and sling.

"Excuse me but is this Eva Lewis' room?"

Joelynn looked up to see Dr. Spencer clad in an FBI jacket. "Dr. Spencer?" she asked.

"I'm Colin Spencer. I work with the FBI. I remember you thought I was my brother, Colt. We're twins."

Joelynn's eyes widened, "Twins? I didn't know that. What are you doing here?"

"I came to check on your cousin. The police outside her room have been dismissed."

"Why? I thought it wasn't safe for her to be unguarded."

"We want to take her somewhere more secure."

"Are you kidding?"

"No ma'am. I'm not kidding. I was just speaking with the doctor."

"You don't have the right to do that!"

"We're protecting a witness who's currently in a coma. All we needed was a judge's signature to do it."

"This is bullshit."

"No, it's the FBI trying to keep your cousin safe and while to catch a killer."

"Where are we going then?"

"We?" Dr. Spencer asked.

"Yeah...did I stutter? We as in me and my cousin. Where she goes I go."

"I'm sorry that's not possible at this time. Eventually, your cousin's whereabouts will be released to you or if she wakes up but right now...for your own safety, you aren't allowed to come."

"That makes no sense. Why wouldn't I be allowed to come? I'm her only family member left!"

"Really? She doesn't have you listed as an emergency contact or next of kin on her medical records."

That surprised Joelynn. "So? I'm still her family."

"Listen, I understand you're concerned. You want to be there for her when she wakes up. I get it. Right now, we're focused on her safety. We don't want anyone to harm her, can you understand that?"

Joelynn nodded, "I still think..."

"You cannot come with her but I promise to keep you updated on how she's doing. The moment she wakes up, I'll call you, okay?"

Joelynn didn't know what to do. She wanted to go with Eva but she knew she couldn't keep arguing with the FBI, "Fine...but you promise to call me the moment she wakes up?"

Dr. Spencer nodded, "I cross my heart and hope to die."

Joelynn watched as Dr. Spencer issued orders to the hospital staff to have her moved. She stepped out into the hallway and sat down. She felt exhausted and alone. Her phone rang. She looked at the caller ID. It was Jacob.

"Hello?"

"Joelynn. How's Eva?"

Joelynn felt overwhelmed by emotions. She really was happy that Jacob had called her. "Jacob can I come over?"

Twenty minutes later she found herself at Jacob's house explaining everything that had happened at the hospital. Jacob shrugged, "It makes sense that they want to keep her safe but why keep it from you? That's kind of weird."

Joelynn looked at Jacob, "Any news about your mom?"

She could see his face darken, "No news...but no matter what I'm leaving it up to the police to figure things out. She probably died of natural causes anyway."

Joelynn and Jacob hugged one another trying to give and receive comfort at the same time.

"I invited someone over to join us for dinner," Jacob said.

"Really? Who is it?"

"My boyfriend."

"What!" Joelynn was shocked. "When did this happen?"

"It's been happening but he's really sweet and I think you're going to like him. I hope you do anyway."

"What's his name?"

"Edward."

"Edward? How appropriate."

Jacob chuckled. He thought it felt good to laugh again. "I'm going to check on my chicken. He'll be here any moment so let him in."

"Okay. I'll just wait right here." Joelynn smiled as she watched Jacob go into the kitchen. A dinging noise caught her attention. Jacob had left his phone behind. She picked it up and swiped the screen to see a text message from Edward, "I'll be there in a minute." She looked at the picture and her eyes widened at the picture of Jacob holding a green elephant next to his boyfriend.

"Jacob..."

He came back into the room, "What is it? Are you looking through my phone again?" He didn't notice Joelynn's look of shock right away.

She held his phone out and asked, "Who is this?"

"That's my boyfriend Edward. He should be here by now."

Joelynn was speechless. She looked at the picture again and shook her head, "No. I know this man and his name isn't Edward."

Before she could explain, there was a knock at the door.
