ALINA KING HAD ABSOLUTELY NO SOFT SPOTS. She was both raised and trained to have none and to not let her feelings cloud her judgment. She was trained to become a person who could kill someone without a moment of hesitance and be completely fine with watching someone die right in front of her eyes.

         She got used to seeing people die when she was barely a teenager. The Academy that trained her and the rest of the children in District Two did everything it could to make them bulletproof. One of the biggest parts of that was their gladiator games. They would bring in two people from the prison, the people who were already sentenced to death, and make them fight until death. So, the children were not only forced to watch children kill each other once a year, but they had to watch it almost every week.

         The weak ones gave up after seeing the gladiator games the second time and therefore gave themself and their family a bad reputation. But Alina was not a quitter. Her mother would kill her with her bare hands if she was not the top student and the one to volunteer when she turned eighteen. It was what was expected of her. The Kings were practically royalty when it came to the Games. They were strong, brutal, fearless, and never lost the Games.

         Reina King always taught her daughters that love was a weakness. She told them to think with their head rather than their heart. Due to that, Alina always kept her head in the game and never allowed herself to get distracted by things as stupid and unnecessary as love. Plus, she never wanted to get that vulnerable with anyone. She never wanted to know if someone could love her despite her flaws because her flaws were the only thing her own mother ever pointed out.

         She did not believe the love her sister read about in her books really existed. How could someone look at every horrible thing she ever did and love her anyway?

         Her anger and the need she had to prove her mother wrong was the thing that made her volunteer for the Hunger Games in the first place. She wanted her name to be remembered and, above all, her mother's approval and love.

         Alina constantly chose hate and pride over love, which is probably how Cato Hadley became the only person who made her want to drop everything she worked for just to keep him breathing.
