The smell of desire and safety which no longer belongs to me brings me back to the present. My knees are sore from the cold hard tiled floor. How long have I been here?

"Cady, talk to me," Grey says softly in my ear.

"I finally understand," I choke out.

Grey's arms tighten around me and I fight every urge to sink into him. Pulling away, I look at him. "You don't have to pretend or keep looking after me out of some sense of duty."

My heart is pounding too hard and I'm breathless. He blames me for what happened, he's ashamed of me, he watched me lose our child. I stumble out of the room I lost Grey in forever.

The doors at the other end of the corridor swing open. Terrell and Annabelle, accompanied by a group of people holding guns, walk towards us while blocking our exit. The urge to run, to fight and to curl into a ball battle inside me; I end up paralysed with indecision.

"You shouldn't be here. This is a restricted access area for authorised personnel only," Terrell says tensely. His hands clench into fists and I see a gun strapped to his waist. Why did I give my gun to Sienna?

"It's my fault. I wanted to return here to face what happened. I thought it might help." Grey says, stepping next to me.

"You should have spoken to me first. You need authorisation to come up here. This won't go unnoticed, Grey. We thought you were making progress." Terrell purses his lips.

"It was my idea. If anyone is to blame it's me," I say hoarsely.

"As for you, Cady, you're behaviour has been erratic and unacceptable. You can't shoot someone in the foot because they don't move out of your the way." Terrell frowns, rubbing his nose, and I know he still hasn't forgiven me for breaking it. "I don't know what to do with you."

"I'm leaving with Sienna, so you won't have to worry about me from tomorrow," I say.

"No, I'm afraid I can't allow you to leave. At the moment, you're a danger to others," Terrell says. "Your behaviour is aggressive. You refuse to let Annabelle treat you. I think you need to remain here under supervision." Terrell nods.

"Cady isn't a danger-" Grey shakes his head.

Terrell holds up his hand. "It's my final decision and I'm sure Annabelle will agree."

I look at Annabelle who has remained silent the entire time. She's inspecting me and I can tell from her expression she'll be of no use to me.

"Cady, you're not coping and for the moment, I think you need to rest and focus on recuperating before venturing outside." Annabelle gives me a look of sympathy.

I'm angry. My occasional visits to a cupboard due to my inability to deal with my overwhelming emotions does not make me incompetent. It does not mean I'm incapable of making decisions. All it means is I'm human.

Annabelle turns to Grey. "Grey, Cady has been very supportive of you recently when you were struggling. She refused to give up on you even though you'd given up on yourself. Now is the time for you to help her."

"She may be struggling, I know I am, but to be honest I think that's expected. However, she is perfectly capable of making her own decisions. She isn't a danger to others, today she was protecting her friend who was being attacked. I trust Cady with my life, and I don't think making her stay here against her will is going to do her any good," Grey says, straightening up and his hand rests on my lower back.

I don't allow myself to think too deeply. Yet, I can't ignore the encouragement it gives me.

I hold my head up. "I'm leaving."

Terrell shakes his head in exasperation. "No, you're not. And right now, I have more pressing matters than a girl who can't keep herself out of trouble. Guards, escort Cady to the empty office at the end of the corridor. Remove the phone and ensure she doesn't leave for the time being. We'll continue this conversation in the morning after I've had time to deliberate and you've hopefully had some time to contemplate your behaviour."

"You're locking her up?" Grey growls.

"Cady needs to understand her actions have consequences. She shot someone and I can't allow that to go unpunished," Terrell says.

Guards approach me and I recoil.

"I'd prefer if you went voluntarily. I don't want to have to use force," Terrell says flatly.

"I'm not sure it can be considered voluntarily if you use threats," Grey snaps. His hand interlocks with mine. "Let me stay with her."

"Fine. I am not The State. I don't want to replicate what they did," Terrell says, waving his hand. He disappears as the guards close around us.
