Lie No. 2

Liars don't trust each other much.

You never know whether your child is lying to you, or that beggar has more than enough to eat than she claims.

You never know if the mansion of your boss really was built from his barely-scraping-by salary, or that the national highway project is just under 5 trillion dong.

The Vietnamese society is a round circle of extreme suspicion and finger-pointing.

It's a destructive system, but it's quite effective when it comes to producing cunning, callous liars.

Which is why I rarely feel guilty lying to my parents when I steal their money.

Am I a bad kid for doing that?

No, not really.

I think I'm quite good at keeping up with the Vietnamese tradition.
