FATE TWISTED BY LOVE

CHAPTER 1

Naina was lying on the bed still crying her heart out after finishing the cremation ritual of her Nanaji. She was still blaming God for whatever she had lost till now & was going through a rough time as she had no one left in her family. She had heard her Nanaji's final words & was confused with what that exactly meant. But then she had forgotten all about it when he breathed his last & bid goodbye to the world.

She was so much of a crying mess that she hadn't realized when she was taken to a huge mansion by his Nanaji's best friend. After sobbing for the next hour or so, she drifted to sleep. It was the constant knocking on the door that made her open her eyes. She rubbed her eyes watching the alien surroundings around her. Where was she? And suddenly everything came back as a flashback. She remembered that she was at someone else's place, at her grandfather's best friend's place to be precise.

She opened the door still in the same distraught condition. There was someone standing on the door holding a tray of food for her. "Mujhe kuch nahi khaana. Bhook nahi hai. Aap please yeh waapis le jaaiye.", she said in a low voice. But the other person seemed reluctant, "Arey aise kaise. Main raat ko aaya tha khaana lekar, par jab aapne darwaaza nahi khola toh main waapas chala gaya. Aapne kal raat se kuch nahi khaaya hai. Abhi toh khaana hi padega. Warna Nanaji mujhe bhi khaane nahi denge."

He walked in her room & placed the tray on the bed side table. "Waise mera naam Ramdhari hai. Aapko kuch bhi chahiye ho toh aap mujhe aawaaz laga dena. Main fauran aa jaunga." He was about to walk towards the door but stopped & turned to face her, "Ummm... Kya main aapko didi bula sakta hun?"

She realized that she hadn't uttered a single word, so she spoke softly, "Mera naam Naina hai." He smiled & asked again, "Toh kya main aapko Naina didi bula sakta hun?" She finally smiled a bit & nodded. "Naina didi... Aap fresh ho jaiye aur naashta kar lijiye. Main aata hun. Ummm... Aapka saaman udhar rakha hai." Saying that, he went back to his work.

Naina looked around the room for the first time & gasped after seeing the huge lavish bedroom. She saw that her bags were kept near the wardrobe as pointed by Ramdhari. She took a deep breath & went to freshen up. If she was surprised seeing her bedroom, she looked stunned standing at the entrance of the washroom. She had never seen such a huge bathroom ever in her life.

She entered hesitantly & then freshened up. She was still not in a mood to eat. She was hungry but the tears & her past kept making its presence because of which she couldn't eat. She tried to divert her mind & busied herself in arranging her clothes in the wardrobe. She placed a small photo frame of her Nanaji on the bed side table & gazed at it lovingly. It was over an hour when there was a knock again, & she reluctantly went to open the door.

She was surprised to see her Nanaji's friend standing in front of her who had a genuine smile on his face. "Kya main andar aa sakta hun beta?", he asked softly. She moved away to let him in. He sat on the couch whereas she sat across him on the bed. He looked around the room & his gaze landed on the untouched breakfast.

"Naina... Main jaanta hun ki tumhe kuch khaane ki iccha nahi ho rahi hogi. Par khaana zaruri hai. Tumhe apni sehat ka dhyaan rakhna hoga. Aur tumhe dekhkar lag raha hai ki tumne peechle kuch dinon se thik se khaaya nahi hai." She didn't say anything & lowered her head, tears pooling in her eyes again hearing the concern in his voice. She still didn't know why she was here. Why her grandfather's best friend had brought her to this huge mansion? And what promise they were talking about in the hospital?

When she didn't say anything, he continued, "Naina... Main tumhara dukh bohot acche se samajh sakta hun. Tumne kam umar mein hi apne maa-baba ko kho diya. Sirf Jay hi tumhara parivaar tha, sahara tha. Beti... Tumhara na khaane se tumhare maa-baba yaa tumhare Nanaji waapis toh nahi aayenge na. Socho wohhh log jahaan kahin bhi hain, unhe tumhe iss haal mein dekhkar kitna bura lag raha hoga."

She was already sobbing remembering her Nanaji. She didn't have much memories with her parents & couldn't recollect much as she had lost her parents in a car accident, when she was three years old. Nanu sat next to her, "Dekho... Main tumhare Nanaji ka bohot achha dost hun." She immediately looked at him & he smiled, "Main dost tha, yeh nahi bolunga, kyunki Jayanti aaj bhi mere iss dil mein, mere zindagi mein moujud hai. Uski yaadon ko main kabhi marne nahi dunga. Aur tumhe bhi yahi karna hai Naina. Unhe apni yaadon mein zinda rakhna hai, tumhe khush rehna hoga, jisse unki aatma ko bhi shanti mile."

His words finally making some sense & she cried her heart out hugging him. Nanu kept patting her head, consoling her. Her sobs continued for a while & then she slowly quietened down. When she opened her eyes to see him, she saw the same love & warmth as she felt with her Nanaji. She didn't know why but she thought that she felt connected to him as if she knew him from before.

Nanaji called out Ramdhari, "Suno... Naina aur mera khaana yahin le aao. Hum saath mein khaayenge." Ramdhari nodded & he let his tears flow too after seeing the vulnerable look on Naina's face. He took away the breakfast tray with him. He was back in the next ten minutes holding two fully served plates. He kept the plates on the bed next to them & dragged the table in front of them. He placed the plates & filled two glasses of water.

Nanu knew that she won't eat as her mind was still occupied with the sudden turn of events in her life. He started feeding her & she quietly ate this time. Ramdhari smiled the brightest & left them alone. Nanu too finished his lunch after feeding her. Naina had many questions for him but right now her head was drumming badly. She needed to rest.

Nanu somehow could see her condition. He took away the plates with him & came back with a tablet. She took it silently & gulped it down. "Naina... Tum ab thoda aaram karlo. Shaam ko milenge. Agar tumhe thik lage toh main neeche hi rahunga. Aa jaana. Chalo ab so jao." On hearing him, she closed her eyes & drifted to sleep immediately.

She was again woken up by constant knocks on the door. She smiled a little seeing Ramdhari standing at the door. "Naina Didi... Raat ke aath baj gaye hai. Aap uthi nahi isliye main aa gaya aapko uthaane. Wohhh Nanaji aapka khaane ke liye intezaar kar rahe hai. Aap jaldi aa jaiyega." He didn't wait to listen what she wanted to say as if already guessing that she would refuse for dinner.

Naina freshened up & joined Nanu, she knew that she shouldn't make him wait for dinner. She didn't eat much but at least she had started eating on her own. "Naina... Main jaanta hun ki tumhare mann mein bohot se sawaal honge mere liye aur main unn sab sawaalon ke jawaab bhi dunga tumhe. Par wohh sab tab hi mumkin hoga jab tum hamare saath khushi khushi rahogi. Kya Naina tum mujhe apne zindagi mein apna Nanu samjhogi, apna parivaar samjhogi? Main yeh nahi keh raha ki tum mujhe apne Nanaji ki jagah do, main bas yeh chaahta hun ki tum mujhe tumhari zindagi mein shaamil karo. Kya tum mujhe Nanu bula sakti ho? Kya apni zindagi mein mujhe apne parivaar maan sakti ho?"

She was already crying & she knew that she felt connected to this person instantly. She hugged him again & slowly muttered, "Nanaji... Kya main aapko Nanaji bula sakti hun?" Nanu was the happiest & took her in a fatherly hug, promising himself to take proper care of her & her life ahead.

Days passed & the bond between them strengthened. She started sharing all that she had faced growing without her parents. She told him how Nanaji took care of her & her studies. She had topped in the University & finished her graduation on scholarship. On Nanu's insistence, she had confessed that she had wanted to study further but because of their financial conditions she couldn't do it. He asked her if she would still want to pursue her further education & she agreed happily. She wanted to be busy with something & learning seemed the best way out.

Nanu also shared some fond memories of his college days that he had spent with her Nanaji. He also kept talking about his deceased wife, but most of the time she heard was all about his grandson, Sameer. She had seen their pictures. She somehow felt some strange feelings in her heart seeing his handsome smiling face. She was instantly attracted to him. But something in his picture had caught her attention. His deep chocolaty eyes. The sudden pull she was feeling towards him stunned her. She was never the one to take interest in guys. But one glance at his picture, & she was fascinated.

She thought, if this is what she was feeling with just looking at his photo, what would happen when she would face him. Nanu told her that he was gone to London to finalize some deal & would be back soon. Now she was desperately waiting for his return, to check whether the fascination was limited to his pictures only, or she would be charmed by his presence too.

She was getting used to the whole mansion by now. Nanu & Ramdhari had helped her to come out from her glum life. She started smiling & was happy to find a small sweet family in them. She even started cooking with Ramdhari as it was her favorite thing to do. She had always enjoyed cooking with her Nanaji. Nanu enjoyed the meals heartily.

Munna & Pandit came by one morning to check on him & were surprised to see the new guest in the house. They wanted to ask about her & waited for Nanu to introduce them. But he didn't. Instead, he diverted their attention & asked them about their work. They were intrigued but didn't voice it out.

Once they were out of the house, Munna spoke while driving his car, "Yaar... Nanaji ne toh hume uss ladki ke baare mein kuch bataaya hi nahi. Par wohhh hai kaun? Aur uss ghar mein kyun reh rahi hai? Sameer ne toh kabhi kisi cousin ke baare mein nahi bataaya."

Pandit replied in an irritated tone, "Mujhe nahi pataa yaar Chenu. Ek toh wohhh Nanaji ne bhi kitne aasaani se hamara dhyaan uss ladki par se hataa diya. Mujhe lagta hai hume Sameer se poochna chahiye. Shayad usse kuch pataa hoga."

He instantly called his friend & it went unanswered, "Ab yeh bhi phone nahi uthaa raha.", Pandit was frustrated. They had just reached their office when his mobile rang, "Hello. Sameer." They seemed happy that he had called back immediately.

"Pandit... Itne subah subah kaun call karta hai? I really hope it's something important or else I'm going to kill you both when I will be there." His friends chuckled at his sudden threat but that didn't deter them from teasing their best friend. "Sameer... Hume pataa hai ki wahaan abhi che baj rahe honge. Aakhir London saadhe chaar ghanta peeche jo hai yahaan se. Par tujhe toh aadat hai na subah jaldi baje uthne ki. Toh wahaan jaakar aadat kaise chut gayi? Yaa kisi ke saath raat bhar itna busy ho gaya tha ki neend poori hi nahi hui teri?"

Sameer made some noises while getting up from the bed & thundered, "Tune yeh poochne ke liye phone kiya hai? Aur agar haan toh mujhe faltu ki baatein karne mein koi interest nahi hai. Bye." Before he could disconnect, Munna spoke, "Sameer... Hum abhi tere ghar se aa rahe hai. Nanaji se milne gaye the, unke haal chaal poochne."

Sameer waited patiently for him to continue & he did, knowing very well that his stupid friend hadn't called his Nanu from past ten days, "Nanaji ekdum thik hai aur... aur... wohhh... wahaan... wahaan...", Munna stuttered thinking if he should ask him or not. "Yeh wohhh... wahaan... Kya laga rakha hai? Sidhe se bol na kya baat hai, aise hakla kyun raha hai?"

Hearing Sameer's worried voice, Munna looked at Pandit for help. "Ummmm... Sameer... Tere ghar par ek ladki thi. Hume laga ki Nanaji uska introduction denge hume, par aisa kuch nahi hua. Wohh ladki ko pehle kabhi tere ghar mein nahi dekha. Isliye bas jaanna tha ki wohhh kaun hai. Humne isliye call kiya ki shayad tujhe iss baare mein kuch pataa ho.", Pandit said everything in a go.

There was silence for a whole minute & they thought that the call was disconnected. Munna was about to cut the call but then they heard his voice, "Mujhe nahi pataa wohh ladki kaun hai. Aur wahaan rehkar yeh pataa lagaana tum dono ka kaam hai. Kuch bhi karo, kaise bhi karke mujhe uss ladki ke baare mein sab information chahiye. Samjhe. Main sirf ek din de raha hun tum dono ko. I want to know who the hell is living in my house.", saying that the call went off.

Munna & Pandit frowned at each other, "Ponga... Isne toh hume hi uljhan mein daal diya. Ab hum log kaise pataa lagayenge ki wohhh ladki kaun hai aur Sameer ke ghar mein kyun reh rahi hai." "Chenu... Kuch toh sochna padega aur hamare dost ke liye pataa bhi lagaana padega." They left to their respective cabins for now to start their work.

Nanu was a little tensed after his favorite Rahu-Ketu left. He had seen them glancing in Naina's way a lot of times. They had waited for him to make the introductions. But he didn't. Nanu didn't want to take any chances for now. Right now, he didn't want her to cross their paths. He was afraid that these guys would judge her wrongly & the same would be made known to their best friend who was afar right now

Sameer hadn't called Nanu since the day he had left from here. He had just informed via his assistant that he had reached London & that was it. No messages. No calls. Nothing. Even Nanu hadn't attempted to call his grandson. He knew that Sameer was still upset with the whole marriage conversation before he had left.

Nanu somewhere knew that his Rahu-Ketu would've already talked to Sameer about Naina by now & he was waiting for his grandson's call. But that didn't come the whole day. Instead, Munshiji came visiting him in evening to discuss some important aspects related to the NGO, that they had opened a few years ago. They were discussing when his Rahu-Ketu entered the house again for the second time that day.

Nanu knew the reason & somewhere he also knew that his grandson was behind this. He should've expected this. Mundit sat beside Nanu. Ramdhari served tea & snacks to them. Munna's & Pandit's gaze moved to the garden where she was watering the plants. Following their gazes, Munshiji asked, "Jayprakashji... Yeh ladki kaun hai? Isse pehle toh kabhi nahi dekha yahaan."

Mundit waited patiently to hear Nanu's reply. They had thought of directly asking him about her but they were glad seeing Munshiji here & now that he had already asked about her, they were curiously waiting for the introduction. Nanu took a deep breath & called her, "Naina... Beta, yahaan aao." She stopped in her tracks as she hadn't noticed the sudden guests. "Aao. Idhar baitho." She sat next to Nanu & looked at the others nervously. "Munshiji... Aap toh mere dost, Jayantilal Parekh ko jaante ho na?" He nodded & Nanu continued, "Naina uski naati hai. Aur Naina, yeh hai Munshiji, hamare NGO ka sab kaam kaaj yahi dekhte hai. Aur yeh dono..."

He pointed towards his Rahu-Ketu, "Yeh dono Munna aur Pandit hai. Sameer ke best friends. Maheshwari Industries mein Sameer ke saath kaam karte hai." She bent forwards to touch Munshiji's feet & he blessed her wholeheartedly. She just acknowledged Mundit with a smile & they too smiled back.

Munshiji spoke, "Arey waah. Yeh toh bohot acchi baat hai. Naina yahaan hai toh Jayantilal kahaan hai? Unse milkar bohot time ho gaya hai. Unhe bhi bulaaiye, unse bhi mil lete hai." Nanu turned to her & spoke calmly, "Naina... Apne liye bhi chai le aao." She understood the pretext of leaving them alone & she left towards the kitchen to help Ramdhari. She didn't want to have tea now, but somehow, she had started missing her Nanaji again.

Nanu turned to Munshiji & Mundit, "Mera dost Jayanti ab iss duniya mein nahi raha. Dus din pehle hi wohhh chal basa aur main Naina ko yahaan mere saath le aaya. Toh aap uske saamne Jayanti ki baat mat kijiye. Bohot mushkil se bacchi ne hasna sikha hai. Uske Nanaji hi uski aakhri kadi the uske parivaar mein. Aap toh jaante hi hai na ki Rama aur Rakesh bohot pehle hi chal base the."

Munshiji nodded in understanding & pitied Naina who had lost her whole family. Nanu looked at the gloomy faces of his Rahu-Ketu & smiled, "Kyun Rahu-Ketu? Tumhe bhi jawaab mil gaya na? Isiliye waapis aaye the na?" They didn't react but only nodded. Even Nanu was surprised that they didn't ask anything more & left the house saying that they will come regularly to check on them.

Once inside his car, Munna spoke, "Yaar... Nanaji ki sab baatein sunkar ek taraf mujhe uss ladki ke liye bura bhi lag raha hai aur dusri taraf mujhe aisa bhi lag raha hai ki kahin wohh ladki Nanaji ka faayda na utha rahi ho. Kuch samaj nahi aa raha Ponga." Even Pandit sat there in silence listening to his friend's words. Both were already confused with all that they had heard & suddenly Pandit's mobile rang.

He showed his phone's screen to his friend & took a deep breath, "Hello... Haan Sameer." On the other side of the call, Sameer was restless to hear about the sudden appearance of a girl in his house. "Pandit... Tujhe pataa hai na ki maine kyun call kiya hai. Toh ab mujhe bataa ki wohh ladki kaun hai." Pandit turned his mobile on speaker mode & asked Munna to take over.

"Sameer... Ummmm... Wohh ladki Nanaji ke dost ki naati hai." "Toh mere ghar pe kya kar rahi hai?", he hollered from the other end. His friends were losing their patience too as he wasn't allowing them to speak. "Sameer... Nanaji ke best friend kuch din pehle hi guzar gaye hai aur isliye uss ladki ko Nanaji ghar le aaye."

"Ab humara ghar dharamshaala ban gaya hai.", he again cut Munna's talk. "Was he going to hear the whole thing for once without interrupting him", mused Munna in his mind. This time though Pandit lost his patience & spoke, "Tujhe agar hamari baat sunni hi nahi hai toh hum bhi aage kuch nahi baatayenge. Khud hi phone kar Nanaji ko aur pooch le tujhe jo bhi jaanna ho wohh...", saying that Pandit disconnected their call.

Munna looked at his best friend with amusement. Had he seriously disconnected the call? "Ponga... Tune Sameer ka call kaat diya?", he asked raising his eyebrow. Pandit exhaled, "Haan... Kaat diya phone. Usse hamari baat sunni hi nahi hai. Chenu... Tujhe bhi pataa hai ki jabse wohhh London gaya hai, usne ek baar bhi Nanaji ko phone nahi kiya. Hamara best friend kab se itna badal gaya yaar. Pehle toh aisa nahi tha. Jab bhi jahaan bhi jaata, Nanaji ko roz phone karta, par iss baar aisa kya hua hai ki usne ek baar bhi Nanaji ke haalchaal poochne ko bhi phone nahi kiya. Kuch toh hua hai Sameer ke jaane se pehle aur yeh tu bhi jaanta hai ki wohhh hume abhi nahi bataayega."

Munna agreed but still was concerned, "Ponga... Agar kuch hua bhi hai toh Sameer hume baad mein bataa hi dega. Abhi usse hamari zarurat hai. Nanaji ke saath jo bhi hua ho, hum usse akela nahi chod sakte na?" Pandit closed his eyes remembering the promise they had made, when they were seven years old that they would never leave him alone...

With tears in his eyes, he dialed Sameer's number. He picked up the phone after few rings, "Hello... Aur kuch bolna reh gaya tha kya?" This time again Munna asked, "Sameer... Tu waapas kab aa raha hai? Dekh, tune dus din se Nanaji se baat nahi ki. Hum jaante hai ki kuch toh hua hai aur hum tujhe force nahi karenge hume bataane ke liye. Hum bas yahi chaahte hai ki tu ek baar unhe call kar, unse baat kar. Kya hum hamare best friend ko nahi jaante, hume pataa hai ki tu bhi Nanaji ko utna hi miss kar raha hai, jitna wohh tujhe kar rahe hai. Bhale hi unhone humse tumhare baare mein kuch nahi poocha, par unki aankhon mein dekhkar hum yeh jaan hi gaye ki wohh tujhe kitna miss kar rahe hai. Sameer... Please ek baar call toh kar le bhai."

On the other side of the call, Sameer's eyes pooled with tears & without uttering a word, he disconnected the call this time. Mundit didn't call him again, knowing that their friend needed some time alone & sort out the matter.

In London, Sameer was seated in his hotel room making final changes to his presentation. But now, after talking to his best friends, he knew that it was time to talk to his grandfather. When he had left for London, he was hell angry on his Nanu for almost forcing him to agree for marriage. Since childhood, he had agreed to each & everything that his Nanu had wanted. But this marriage thing wasn't acceptable to him.

Sameer had seen enough in his childhood that he had decided to never get married. He neither believed in marriages nor in love. He closed his eyes & remembered his past. How his father used to come home drunk & beat up his mother, how he left them for another woman & cheated on her mother, how her mother brought him to his Nanu's place & then committed suicide. Fresh tears made its way & he started crying after such a long time. He lost control on his feelings today, remembering his mother.

Nanu was the one who took care of him since he was seven years old. He taught him everything. Then how come he was treating him badly now. Just because of a marriage conversation, he wasn't talking to his grandfather from the last ten days. He hadn't even taken his blessings while leaving. He cursed himself for treating Nanu that way.

Making up his mind to apologize to Nanu, he immediately called up on the landline. He patiently waited for Nanu or Ramdhari to pick up the call. The call went through & he heard her voice for the first time, "Hello..." His heart skipped few beats hearing her soothing voice. She again said, "Hello... Kaun bol raha hai?" Had he dialed a wrong number. He saw the number on his mobile & it reflected 'HOME'. So, it wasn't a wrong number. Then who had picked up the call.

Instantly he remembered about the chat with his friends. So, she is the same girl. Before he could say more, Nanu took away the receiver from Naina's hand. "Hello... Kaun hai?" Sameer instantly stuttered after hearing Nanu's voice, "Hello... Nanu... Main... Main..." Nanu sighed in relief after hearing his grandson's voice after ten long days. He was missing him too much. Naina's presence had somehow calmed his heart down but yet he was missing his lifeline.

"Sameer... Beta... Kaisa hai tu?", Nanu finally spoke in a low voice, eyes misting with tears. Sameer's eyes misted too after hearing his Nanu's voice, "Main thik hum Nanu. Aap kaise hai?", his voice breaking at the end. Nanu understood that his stubborn grandson had called to apologize. He knew him enough.

After half a minute Sameer spoke, "Nanu... I'm sorry. Mujhe aise aapse baat karna band nahi karna chahiye tha. Maine nikalte waqt aapka aashirwaad bhi nahi liya, aapse thik se baat bhi nahi ki. I'm sorry Nanu. Please mujhe maaf kar dijiye." Nanu smiled knowing that Sameer would realize his mistake soon & make it up too.

"Sameer... Waapas kab aa rahe ho? Ab iss buddhe ko itna bhi mat tadpao beta." Sameer chuckled at the other end, "Aap buddha kise keh rahe hai? Aap toh abhi bhi jawaan hai Nanu. Kaho toh aapki shaadi ki baat chalaun? Dekhna kitne saare rishte aayenge aapke liye." They both laughed wiping their own tears. "Nanu... Main iss hafte aa jaunga. Kal final presentation dena hai. Agar deal final ho gayi toh main parso yahaan se nikal jaaunga."

They talked for few more minutes relating to the deal & then Sameer asked a bit hesitantly, "Nanu... wohhh... wohhh... Pehle phone kisne uthaaya tha?" Nanu wanted to laugh at his stuttering but avoided it. "Kyun? Tujhe Rahu-Ketu ne kuch bataaya nahi kya?" Sameer rubbed his neck in nervousness as he recalled how he was almost shouting on his friends today & didn't listen to the whole thing.

"Haaan... Thoda thoda bataaya. Kuch thik se samaj nahi aa raha tha... wohhh... wohhh... haaan... Network thik nahi tha na, isliye unki awaaz thik se nahi aa rahi thi." Nanu chuckled & Sameer understood that he was caught in his acting. "Beta... Main tumhara Nanu hun. Bachpan se jaanta hun tumhe. Koi network issues nahi the. Tere gusse ki wajah se unhone poori baat kahi hi nahi hogi tujhse. Kyun sahi kahaa na?"

Sameer wanted to kick himself for this. His anger was surely causing a lot of problems. He should learn patience so that he would henceforth talk to his friends patiently. His Nanu & his friends knew him too much. His thoughts broke when he heard Nanu's voice again, "Sameer... Tum ho na?"

"Haan... Main... Main yahin hun aur kahan jaunga.", he grumbled in a low voice. Nanu chuckled again & spoke, "Tum waapis aa jao. Fir usse thik se mil lena." He didn't have anything more to say now, "Chalo Sameer... Tum apne presentation par dhyaan do aur mujhe sone do. Thak gaya hun main. Jaldi waapas aana beta." Sameer bid his goodbye on a happy note. Before he could disconnect the call, he heard Nanu's voice, "Naina... Haldi wala doodh mere kamre mein hi rakhwa dena."

Sameer lost all his focus from the important presentation & his heart thudded loudly remembering her voice & her name, "NAINA..."
