Lost Lineage

My mother's side
Lives on in lonely plains
Surrounded by the corn
And Iowa made grains

There is no family history
No stories from afar
Maybe German, maybe Irish
Stories forgotten like little scars

I do not know my fathers side
The story stats with my grandparents
Behind them I do not know
The broken links apparent

My father says his fathers Irish
But I do not know
I've never heard but a past
Besides Irish horses though

My culture does not exist
Not like Japan or France
Kraft mac & cheese and football games
Are not the same as ethnic dance

My clothing is from Target
Not meaningful past the price
No symbolism past the colors
Or beads that entice

My 'traditional food' is Oreo balls
And brisket and the grill
Nothing like spätzel or pho
And things that require will

I wish that I had these things
These things of my past
So that I can enjoy myself
With a history that is vast
