Prompt: Forbidden Elemental AU

"Get away from him before I break every bone in your body!"  Nya's panicked voice rang out, slicing through the chill of the night air.

"You're messing with the wrong gang, little girl," came the response from a rough, deep voice.  He wheezed in laughter and it sounded like he was gargling asphalt. The offending noise grated against her ears and sent a chill down her spine.

Nya tightened her grip on Jay's shoulder and clenched her fist near her jaw, guard up.  She could feel Jay's elemental power bristle in anger, yearning to be let loose. They were not going to take him, she would make sure of it.

The men stepped forward, wielding their weapons, forcing Jay and Nya into the choke point of the dark alley.

"Nya, it's ok. Let me handle them," Jay whispered, standing up to pull her safely behind him.

"No! That's exactly what they want! If they see you use your power they have all the evidence they need to take you!" She tried to keep her voice in a hushed whisper.

"It was a trap from the beginning. I'll take them all out to buy us time, regroup."

"Jay,  no!"

"I'm sorry Nya, it's the way it has to be. We lost this battle, but we haven't lost the war."

"Are you two done with your lovers spat?"

Jay smiled at the assailants.  He counted twenty of them, piece of cake.  His elemental power stirred, excited for action.

"Nya, I think it's time to give these numskulls a jolt of reality."

"What are you going to do bluebell? Dazzle us with a light show?"

"Something like that," Jay grinned and tried not to let his breath hitch as a tingling surge washed up his spine and down his arms. His hands glowed blue, illuminating his toothy smile.

Some of the thugs stepped back in fear, others rushed forward.  Blue lightning lit up the alleyway, simultaneously hitting all twenty targets.  The men screamed in pain then dropped to the ground, completely knocked out.  A thunderous boom reverberated off the dingy stone walls.

Nya felt both fear and relief. In the two seconds it took for Jay to use his power, their lives completely changed. 

"Time to go," he said, turning towards her. He looked wired, alive.  Suppressing his power for so long had been killing him slowly.

Nya nodded. They would be on the run now. For how long? She didn't know, but she did know they would finish the fight and win, together.
