Her lips were warm and full of enthusiasm... and didn't feel right. Ron faltered for only a fraction of a second, but it was enough for Lavender, who drew away.

"This isn't working out, is it?"

Ron winced slightly at the sadness she wasn't fully able to suppress. "No, I'm sorry."

She smiled, even as her eyes glistened with unshed tears. "Don't be."

Just then, Hermione appeared. When she saw the pair, she hurried on with her head down low.

Lavender nudged Ron. "Go on."

"But you —"

"I'll be fine. Go."

Ron kissed her cheek. Then he straightened up. "Hermione!"
