"Kana!"
Startled, I jolt up in my seat and glance around before rubbing the sleep put of my eye, "Yes?"
"How long are you going to sleep?" The gruff voice asked me and I quickly stood, realizing it was my Commander, "Ah-! Sorry, Captain Smoker!" I rubbed the back of my neck, "I just haven't been getting enough sleep lately." I gave him a sheepish look as he just gave a sigh, letting out the smoke that had been swirling in his lungs "Don't let it happen again," He turned to face the island as I nodded, "Yes sir!" "While we are here at this island, we need to restock supplies. Kana you will be accompanying Tashigi." Tashigi gave a single nod and walked over to me with a list, "You ready?" "Yes ma'am." I grin at her as we head off the ship. Finally, I can hangout with the only other woman on our ship. I hope she doesn't find me annoying. I walked next to her and give her a slight nudge "So a swordwoman huh?" She gave me a slight look that was a mix between duh and what kind of question was that. I looked down at the ground and cleared my throat. Damn, I made it awkward. "What's first on the list?" I asked her in hopes of changing the subject passed my stupid question. "Well first we should restock bandages and medical supplies." She stated and the pointed to the market, "And we can start on the food." "Sounds good!" I gave her a thumbs up as we walked down the street, heading to the stores.

I wandered over to a jewelry store as we passed it again, on our way back to the ship. I glanced at the beautiful pieces that sat in the window, "Oh wow!" I couldn't help the starry eyed look as the owner stepped out of the shop, "Find something you like Miss?" I glanced over at him and shake my head, "Oh no, I'm sorry, just window shopping." "Are you sure? I have some really fine pieces inside the store." He replied and I mulled over the request before I looked back at him, "I guess looking wouldn't hurt." I gave him a shrug as he clapped his hands and hurried back inside to grab his finest pieces. I leaned against the store wall with my bag of supplies at my legs as I waited. I glanced around at the town that seemed to be slowly winding down as the sun was beginning to set. The women were dressed in such beautiful outfits and the men were dressed in what had to be the finest suits they could each buy. "Sure is a fancy looking town." I utter as I close my eyes which didn't last long as the owner came out of the store with a makeshift table and laid out the most expensive pieces of jewelry I had ever seen before. "Wow!" I ogled the jewelry and bent down to get a better look as he began to explain where each piece came from and what they were made of. He gestured to the last piece that was sitting at the end of the table. "This ring is pure mystery. No body knows where it came from." He held up the box holding the ring. The ring was shaped into a little rose with tinier bands wrapped around it with diamonds placed on the bands and one on top. It was a beautiful black and red color. I stared at it and then frowned at it. Why did this tiny ring look familiar? "It's gorgeous." I mumbled and before I knew what was happening, I was digging in my wallet to pay for the ring "I'll take it." "Excellent!" He smiled and went to grab a bag and swiftly wrapped up the ring before he cams back to me "That'll be 30,000 berri." He grinned as I scoffed but forked over most of my money and snatched the ring from him. I grabbed the supply bag and began to leave. "Good doing business with you!" He called, waving at me and I just gave him a small nod and uttered under my breath "Yeah, definitely a scam." "Kana! There you are!" Tashigi waved at me once I walked into sight of the ship. "I lost track of you, where did you go?" "Sorry, I got distracted!" I called as I walked up the ramp to get back on the ship and set down my bag of medical supplies. "Distracted?" She asked as she walked over to take the supplies from me. "Yeah..." I held up the ring box after taking it out of the bag. "You bought a ring? But I don't really take you as one for jewelry." She took the box and opened it to look at the ring. I scoffed and folded my arms against my chest, "Well it looked nice." She peered at me over her glasses and I dropped my arms in a defeated manner, "Okay, okay, you got me. It looks super familiar!" "Familiar like you have seen it before or familiar like it might answer your missing memories?" She questioned me as the other crew members finished putting up the supplies while we talked.
"I...I don't know. I think the second one but I'm not sure how clear it will make anything. For all I know, I can just look at it for years and it wouldn't be any help." I shrug and turn away. It honestly hurt that I couldn't remember a single time before I joined the Navy. My early childhood and into my early adulthood was nothing but a blank slate. I was determined to find out who I was before I joined the Navy. "Don't worry Kana, I am sure your memories will come back to you soon." Tashigi spoke up as she placed a hand on my back and the other handed the ring back to me. She gave a strained smile before leaving me with myself. I appreciated her positivity but the doctors all tell me that I will never regain my missing memories and that I should give up on trying to recall them. I glance down at the ring box, "I hope you can answer some questions that I have." I turned away to go to my shared cabin room with Tashigi and place the ring box down in the dresser drawer. I opened the box and put a shoestring through the ring and then tied it around my neck, "There, now I won't lose it."

I laid down in my hammock and stared out the porthole that I was laying next to. It had been a few months since we set sail from the island where I had bought the ring. I rested one arm under my head for extra pillow support as my other hand reached down to my neck and picked up the ring. I lifted it to look at it in the dying candlelight, "Why are you so important to me? What information do you hold?" I slowly turned it around to see if there was anything else that I had missed but like before I didn't notice anything new about it. With a tired scoff, I dropped the ring roughly on my chest and rolled my eyes, "Maybe I am just getting my hopes up." I leaned up and over to blow out the candle so I could drift off to sleep.

~Dream~
"Kana! Hey, Kana!"
I turned to see who was shouting at me, "Yes?" I turned to see a static person standing not to far away from me "Woah! Where'd you get that ring?" I glanced down at my hand and saw the rose ring sitting there as if it had always been there. "Oh (______) got it for me. Isn't that just the sweetest?" "He got that for you? I heard that that is one of the most expensive rings!" The static person exclaimed before they seemed to remember why they came to talk to me to begin with, "Oh yeah! I forgot to ask if you were going to come to the beach with the (___) group. We're going night swimming." "I don't know. Is it safe?" I replied, "I heard that there have been kidnappings around the beach areas." "Are you afraid?" The static person giggled before making chicken sounds. "No, I'm not afraid. I just don't think it's very safe." I grumbled and smack their shoulder for the chicken sounds. "Why don't you bring (______) for protection? It's not like you two go anywhere without the other anyway." They huffed out in a playful manner.

The moon was full as we stood on top of the jumping cliff. Down below the ocean was kind of calm as it lapped against the rocks. "I don't know if this is a good idea." I looked over at the group of static people. "Don't be a baby!" One hollered as another laughed, "How come you're only adventurous when (______) is around?" "Probably because I know I will be okay with him!" I squeaked as they tugged me to the edge of the cliff. "Oh boo hoo." A static person grinned as we all jumped off the cliffs together. After resurfacing, I realized that it wasn't too much of a big deal and we began to climb back up. But that was a mistake as later a storm was beginning to head in. "We should head back into town! The waves are getting dangerous!" I hollered over the loud crashing waves that began to smash into the rocks. "Just once more and then we'll leave!" A static person walked over and grabbed my arm tightly. "Tight grip." I muttered as the rest of the static group move to stand behind me and began to usher me towards the edge. "Hey-! What are you doing!" I start to push back against the group but the now wet grass from the sudden rain was making my feet slip. "Quick push her over!" A voice whispered in my ear. "Hurry! The storm will get rid of the body!" I felt a sharp pain in my back followed by another sharp pain and then they shoved me and I plummeted towards the ocean.

"Ah-!" I jolt up with a start, causing my hammock to swing and throw me to the ground. "Ow..." I rubbed my chin before letting out a breath realizing I was perfectly safe on the Navy ship. "Man, that was a strange dream..." I stood and dusted off my front, frowning as I couldn't recall what it was that even woke me before laying back down in my hammock as it was only the middle of the night.

The next afternoon I waa on kitchen duty and I gave a tired sigh as I scrubbed the kitchen floor with the brush that was handed to me. Being a chore girl was pretty dumb considering I had been trained for years before being added to Captain Smoker's crew. I looked around the floor and then wiped the sweat from my brow, "Finally clean." I grinned at my work and tossed the brush into the dirty bucket. I stood to admire the kitchen before a small group of soldiers rushed into the kitchen and knocked the bucket over. "Hey!" I shouted at them with annoyance, "Watch where your going!" They didn't have time to defend themselves as Captain Smoker yelled for all hands on deck as we were entering a horrible storm as the ship was starting to get battered around by the choppy waves. The group and I rush outside to grab the broken sail ropes as the raining suddenly began to pound down on top of us. How fast storms happened in open water is scary. I grabbed at the rope and began to pull it down, trying to restrain the sail that was flapping out of control. Captain Smoker was barking orders but it was hard to hear him over the pounding waves and thunder that shook me to my core. I stumbled bit and struggled to tie down the moving cargo that was bouncing around the ship. "Why is this so difficult?" I glance up at the sudden lightning before looking back at the barrel. "Okay, just tie it down and-" I huffed out as the rope tugged back the other way and just about knocked me off my feet. I pulled back towards myself and froze when there was a snap feeling and I caught sight of the ring rolling on the deck. "NO!" I jumped up and raced towards the little ring, shoving crew mates out of my way as I tried to keep my eyes on the little black ring. "Kana get back here!" Smoker yelled over to the howling wind but I ignored him as I dove for the ring and just manged to snag it before it rolled over the edge of the deck. I let out the breath I was holding and turned around to look at my Captain, waving my enclosed fist "Got it!" "Look out!" Tashigi yelped, pointing behind me and I turned around to see a giant wave heading straight for the ship. "Oh hell no!" I started towards the cabin but the wave smashed into the side of the ship, causing me to loose my footing and sending me overboard. "KANA!!" Was the last thing I heard before the ocean jerked me down into the deeper water. I fought to swim back up to the surface and broke through, gasping loudly for air, just as another wave crashes down on top of me.
"No-!" The water was very forceful as it pushed me down further, dragging me far from the safety of my ship. I blinked a few times and looked up and then down. Where's the surface?? How do I get back?? I started swimming up, or at least what I hoped was up. The rushing waves made it very difficult to get very far. My lungs were beginning to burn for air and I winced, trying to ignore the pain. I need to hurry. Just as I could see a small light, something smashed into me and sent me tumbled through the water. I quickly slapped a hand over my mouth, hoping to keep what little air remained in my body; everything was getting heavy and my vision was beginning to blur. I shook my head and started to kick my feet to thrust me back up towards the surface again.
Please let me make it! Please!
I begged within my mind as I was fighting off unconsciousness as my body was beginning to slow down.
I don't want to die here! I have so much to re-discover! Please, don't let me die...
But the ocean was much more powerful than I.
