Family;

life's greatest blessing, a group that dreams, laughs, plays and loves together, those whom you always count on. always present not only in the good times. the most precious gift.

Jahan

Her exhausted eyes reached mine. And I walked up to her and held her hand. Her fingers were warm as I clasped my cold ones around hers.

" You did great, jaan."

I leaned down and stifled a kiss over the crown of her head. Seeing the woman grin brightly as she enveloped my arm, pulling me down to her side.

" Your son will be here shortly."

The nurse said as she looked at Saboohi and I before leaving the hospital room.

" Ah! I missed you so much."

Saboohi groaned in my arm and I smiled. Caressing her hair softly, I spoke.

" I am very proud of you."

I couldn't resist kissing her cheek, her face brightening up with post-labor glow.

" I know." She smiled lazily.

My eyes roamed around the room as I leaned against her bed now. Noticing that mom and her mother had left the room. My stomach knotted as I anticipated the arrival of the nurse who had taken our baby to clean him up.

" Did you see him yet?"

Saboohi asked as her eyes looked at me. And I shook my head with a pout following.

" No, they had taken him before I could stop them."

" Hm, he's very small and crying. I am telling you he's going to be loud."

Saboohi scrunched her nose. And I couldn't help laughing out.

" Saboohi."

I exaggerated seeing the woman giggle.

" I love him already but he better not be loud."

" He'd-"

" Wohoo, welcome to parenthood."

The door burst open and Afaaf with Zaryaab entered. Their hands filled with balloons that said, 'its a boy'. Saboohi and my face lit up with grins seeing the couple. Afaaf hopped over to Saboohi, giving her a bear hug while Zaryaab embraced me brotherly.

" I am so happy for your both." Afaaf held in her squeal as she gushed over Saboohi making me offer her a huge grin.

" Thank you so much guys."

Saboohi spoke just as the door opened and our mothers came in. Their faces sparkling with the joy of being grandmothers now.

" Where is the nurse? When would the dad see his son?"

Mom said as took a seat on the couch. And I pouted yet again, leaning more against Saboohi. Seeing the woman give me an assuring smile.

" Mr and Mrs. Jahangir?"

The door opened and a nurse peeked inside. Her young features contoured in confusion as she looked at the crowd in the room. I straightened up and nodded making her eyes snap towards us.

" Yes."

She nodded her head before walking back out.

" What was that?"

Zaryaab said nonchalantly as he propped himself on the armrest of the couch looking offended. As if he wasn't the one eating candles from the jar on the hospital table. I shook my head at him. From the inside, I was jumping my bones with excitement.

" Why are they taking so long?"

I whispered sadly into Saboohi's ears as soon as everyone got distracted. She squinted her eyes and interlaced our fingers tightly.

" He'll be here in a minute, don't worry."

I hissed in low voice and placed my head over her pillow. Unnoticeably nuzzling in her hair. Saboohi was true of her words, a minute later the door opened and two nurses walked inside. One of them held a baby wrapped in a striped blue blanket. I stood straighter and Saboohi left my hand as I slowly walked to the nurse who stood clueless as to whom to hand over the child. My throat clogged and my knees weakened as I took each careful step.
" Hand him to me, please."

I couldn't even recognize my own voice as the nurse placed the baby in my awaiting arms. The silky velvety blanket made contact with my arms and I breathed out. My senses went haywire as I looked at my son. Pink fleshy skin, round cheeks and small hands that were stretched out as he yawned. His hair were dark and thin and stood in all directions.

" MashAllah." Afaaf breathed out from besides me as she leaned to look at the baby.

" My hands are shaking."

I confessed and averted my eyes to look at everyone. My eyes settled over the mother of my child, seeing her sitting up right as she wiped a lone tear from under her eye.

" Oh Jahan."

Afaaf's said as she beckoned me towards Saboohi. I cuddled our son closer to my chest seeing the baby yawn yet again. As he blinked looking at me.

" Awe baby."

I cooed sitting down next to Saboohi. She leaned against my shoulder, her fingers fixing the blanket nicely.

" His eyes are so dark, I cannot distinguish who's eyes he has."

Saboohi said and I smiled.

He was so beautiful and so precious. I was in awe of what we had created. A life. A child. And he was everything.

" I love him so much already."

I grinned cuddling him to my chest, almost squeezing him. The room burst into awes and laughter. And I snuggled into the warmth of his blanket. My heart melted and tears brimmed my waterline. Saboohi rubbed a hand over my back and I pouted.

" Aaaaaaaaaa."

A shrill cry made me stiffen as I pulled out son back seeing him wail loudly now. His mouth widening as he cried. Flabbergasted, I stared at Saboohi and the our son. She looked a little panicky as she looked at our mothers.

" Arey just rock him in your arms."

Afaaf cut through and I handed him over to his mother. Saboohi rocked him slowly in her arms.

" Hushhushhush."

She sang and I breathed in relief seeing the baby quieten down now.

" He sure is very loud."

I said caressing my little finger over his round cheek. Saboohi scrunched her face. Leaning towards my shoulder she whispered only for my ears.

" I don't like loud kids."

I grinned and wound an arm around her shoulder, looking at the two very precious beings in my life.

" I love you two so much."

I said. Making Saboohi's eyes cut to me as she smiled beautifully making my heart melt just a little more. I kissed her head.

" MashAllah. I feel as if he has Jahan's features more. But his nose is like Saboohi's."

Dadi Gul Jan said.

It had been days as we brought our baby back home and we were still bathing in the bliss of being parents. Currently, our family had all gathered as we cooed over our child and enjoyed evening tea. Mohid was all acting up as the big brother of the house as he looked over both Maher and the newly born.

" He sleeps so peaceful but God knows when he'll keep you awake at nights."

" It's good he hasn't kept us up at nights up till now, Dadi Gul Jan."

Saboohi answered softly as she bit in a cookie.

" Ah, Jahan was just like this, Saboohi. He would sleep peacefully at nights as a baby. I don't remember a night he would have cried or troubled us."

Dad intervened and I smiled sheepishly.

" What's his name?"

Mohid asked suddenly as he peeked as his baby brother who was currently in Dadi Gul Jan's arms. Dadi Gul Jan chuckled as she gave our son back to Saboohi.

" He's nameless right now." She joked to her great grandson.

" Have you guys finally settled over the names yet?"

Mom asked as she sipped her tea. I shrugged and settled next to my wife.

" We are still waiting you know. It seems so difficult to name your own kid."

I said grabbing a peanut biscuit.

" What names have you guys thought of?"

" Yes. Let's just decide over a name today, please."

Dad said and I chuckled.

Uff granddad.

" Abdul Ahad is a nice name. Or Hannan?"

I started with the suggestion.

" Omer too. We know have anyone named Omer in our relatives."

Afaaf suggested.

" Hm, maybe some name with 'G'?"

Dadi Gul Jan spoke before she scrunched and shook her head making me grin at her.

" Adil? But no. It's such a manly name."

Zaryaab said and we laughed.

" Truck."

Mohid yelled as he grabbed my arm. And I laughed as his father messed his hair.

" No mere jaan. We cannot name a baby 'Truck'."

Zaryaab said as the boy pouted innocently.

" Hadi is a nice name as well. I really like Abdul Hadi, no?"

I suggested seeing as everyone nodded.

" Or maybe Khubaib. Abdul Hadi or Khubaib?"

" Abdul Hadi is a nice name."

Khan Dada agreed.

I looked over at Saboohi. Noticing that she had been awfully quiet. Her fingers were holding the baby hand as she looked at us.

" Saboohi, what do you think?" I asked with interest. Awaiting her answer. She greeted me with silence but I could see the shine she had in her eyes. Everyone turned quiet as well, all eyes flickering towards the new mother.

" Khubaib or Abdul Hadi?"

I urged in anticipation. Her eyes stared at me for the longest of moment before she looked down at our son. Her fingers brushing over his cheeks softly.

" You've thought of a name, Saboohi?"

Dadi Gul Jan urged politely, keeping a hand Saboohi's shoulders. And the woman nodded silently.

" Ronaq and Jahan- Rohaan. I'll name him Rohaan."

Her voice broke through all air particles and reached my ears and my heart skipped a beat. Silence blew over everyone as I stared quietly at her. In awe. And in admiration. And in respect. And in love.

Her head tilted to the side slightly, as her eyes beckoned a reaction from me.

" A perfect name. Rohaan."

Mom announced and I could feel the quiver in her voice.

" Rohaan."

I tested the name, nodding my head lightly. My throat clogging up immediately. My muscles twitched and I moved over to her before embracing her to my chest careful enough that Rohaan was between us. My heart thudded against my chest.

" Your baby brother has a name now, Mohid. Call him by the name Rohaan."

I could hear Zaryaab telling Mohid and I pulled back.

" I love you so much." I mouthed to my wife. Seeing her smile softly at me.

" Rohaan Ali Khan."

She announced looking at Rohan making my eyes follow. The name fitted him perfectly.

" Rohaan. My son."

I blinked at him. Saboohi handed him over to me and I squeezed him again. His peacefully sleeping face scrunched and his mouth twisted before he started wailing. I knew this was coming next.

" Jahan. You made Rohaan cry."

Saboohi complained as she took him in her arms again. And Rohaan quietened down almost immediately knowing his mama was holding him. Making me shrug as everyone shared a chuckle with me.

Later that night when I entered our bedroom. Saboohi was by Rohaan's crib as she rocked him in her arms in the dark. Her mouth humming a lullaby. And I couldn't stop staring at her as she held the baby. It was a vision to behold. And I was left utterly mesmerized by its beauty.

We had Rohaan's crib by our bed with the balcony on the other side. Making it easier for moonlight to shadow inside as well as remain close to us. I had installed a small kids illuminating light and stuff toy router over it as well. But Saboohi hadn't put him in his crib until now and he would sleep between us. But tonight, Saboohi was lowering him gently in the crib.

" He's asleep."

She informed softly, seeing me make my way towards her.

" Yeah."

I breathed out now looking at our baby sleeping peacefully. Saboohi sighed as she turned to look at me. Making me immediately tear my gaze to her.

" Thank you. Our son has the most beautifullist name."

She smiled shaking her head slightly. Taking a step towards me, she wound her arms around my waist, keeping her head over my chest. I lowered my chin atop her head. Breathing in the soft scent and warmth she provided.

" His name is extracted from the two most beautiful souls. How could it not be beautiful then." She hummed looking up at me.

Saboohi would never fail to amaze you. She had her own world and her own definitions.

" Jahan."

" Yes."

I answered looking down at Saboohi and threading my fingers through her braided hair. Her large eyes looking up at me with so much love that I stared at her stone cold sobered.

" Saboohi, do you remember when we were at the cabin and I told you I would never leave you?"

She frowned and pulled back just a little so that we could have a better look at each other.

" Uhm mhm." She gave me a nod.

" Well that was the honest truth I knew that time. And it still is. I'd never imagine leaving you. And even if I have my last breath left, I'd give it to you. And I'd truly, utterly and completely love you till that last breath."

" Awe Jahan."

She stifled a gasp as a beautiful smile adorned her lips. Making my heart swell. She leaned on her tiptoes and gave me peck on the cheek making me grin. And in each other's arms we watched Rohaan sleep peacefully.

How Rohaan had turned seven months old, we were still in awe. It seemed as it was just yesterday we had brought him home. And how quickly the months were passing with each day bringing about a new adventure of its own in our lives. Saboohi and I had somehow found the most beautiful relationship with Rohaan by our side. And each day we were grateful for that.

It was just another day and I had returned back home from work. Saboohi was in the veranda with Rohaan and I had joined her there.

" Here's his bottle. Feed him for a while I'll go get you tea."

Saboohi said handing a very active Rohaan to me as she whisked past away into the kitchen.

" My baby's hungry. He wants milk. Aaww."

I cooed, nuzzling him in the stomach with my chin. Rohaan smiled toothless and I cuddled him. He was growing up fast. Chubby round pink cheeks and bright brown eyes. And his round chubby fingers were just the cutest.

" Let's get you some milk baby." I cooed uncapping his small milk bottle before feeding it into his mouth.

" Jahan, you're home."

Dadi Gul Jan walked in with her tea as her eyes glazed over me and Rohaan I nodded and shifted a little so that she would take a seat besides me.

" Look at this guppa. Look at him."

Dadi Gul Jan tapped Rohaan's cheek and he grinned.

" Here's your tea."

Saboohi's soft voice filled my ears and I glanced up seeing her serve tea to Khan Dada from the tray. I noticed how her long red veil cascaded on the floor behind her. Red. She hadn't worn that colour in a while and seeing her in it today made my heart drum.

" Arey arey Jahan, look."

Dadi Gul Jan pointed out making me look down at my son seeing the milk now sliding down his chin because of how incorrect I was holding his bottle.

" Oops."

I smiled sheepishly before reaching for his soft towel and wiping away the excess milk. Saboohi placed my tea on the farthest table and flickered her eyes to us. Making me raise my eyebrows in a gesture of appreciation before throwing her a shameless wink from across the veranda. The woman blushed instantly and rolled her eyes.

Dadi Gul Jan moved to sit with her husband and I cuddled Rohaan, holding up his head as he suckled from his milk bottle.

" Saboohi, where's your tea?"

I asked, wanting her to come and sit by me but the woman frowned.

" Jahan, I've stopped taking tea."

She said as a matter of fact and I smiled awkwardly. Of course Saboohi had stopped drinking tea quiet a while back.

" Jahan Jahan, look at your son."

Dadi Gul Jan gasped. Making Saboohi and I to break our heated eye contact and look at Rohaan as his bottle slipped down his mouth and onto the floor.

" I'll get it."

Saboohi rushed towards us as I stood up with Rohaan. Wounding my left arm around his stomach, I caught the slipping away cap of his bottle. Rohaan made a gurgling sound and my wife gasped.

" Jahan, how are you holding him."

She shrieked and I looked down at our son seeing him rub his fist over his face.

" Take him over your shoulder."

Dadi Gul Jan scolded. But it was too late, Rohaan was already dribbling milk over my shirt.

" Jahan."

Saboohi gasped yet again. And we panicked as Rohaan opened his mouth and dribbled out all the milk probably I had just fed him.

" Pat him on the back."

Saboohi said rubbing our son's back softly. Her other hand wiping away the mess Rohaan had made. Her eyes furious as she looked at me.

" You'll change his clothes. I just changed him into this cute outfit this afternoon."

Her butterscotch eyes threw daggers. As she cooed at Rohaan as he wiggled in my arms. I held him up tightly, wiping away the milk from the corner of his lips.

" Jahan, would you ever stop squeezing him after you've just fed him."

Dadi Gul Jan shook her head. As she looked at her husband.

" Sorry I just keep forgetting the routine-"

I trailed off. Seeing the older couple give us smiles. Before my grandmother spoke again.

" When would these children learn to be parents."

I grinned and Saboohi threw spitfire at me.

" It's you who doesn't learn." She rolled her eyes. Returning her eyes to Rohaan.

" Are you okay, my baby." Saboohi asked and our son grinned as he looked at her. Making her grin back.

My precious being.

I wound my arm around Saboohi's shoulders as she held Rohaan's hand and he smiled looking at us. His bright smile making us forget about the mess he had made.

And this was it. This was my imperfect beautiful life. We were imperfect parents and we were proud of being so. Because despite all, we were a family and we were in love. And we were learning and we were getting better.

My Jahan had it all.

And love would always find its way into your hearts- Ronaq.

And that's the end to another imperfect tale.
