THE GOOD GIRL BAD BOY™ CLICHÉ

The 'Good Girl falls for the Bad Boy™' trope is one I'll never be able to wrap my head around. I can never understand why people become so invested in these ( usually ) cringey, abusive, unrealistic, horribly written, horribly titled ( omg if I have to see one more story titled "the bad boy I love" or "changing the Bad Boy™" or some shit like that I'm gonna rIot ) stories about a girl who's the poster child for innocence and I'm not like other girls trying to change a boy who is literally too fucked up to be any good for her and should be sent to reform school.

Is this a direct attack on literally every author and reader who's extremely invested in these dumb books? Yes, and I'm not ashamed.

They're a menace. I kid you not, every story's plot is the exact same. Girl meets boy, he's doing something typically regarded as Bad Boy Behaviour™, they butt heads, he saves her from getting sexually assaulted ( I hate this point so much as it basically just trivialises rape and survivors of rape because they never bring it up again throughout the whole story and the guy usually asked them feel like shit for "not being aware" or some shit like that and ugh- I just, I really hate it ), she reevaluates her opinion of him, he manipulates her into doing some Bad Boy Behaviour™ using her newly made opinion, she gets in trouble, she dumps him and goes and makes out with some other boy — who's usually the Bad Boy™'s enemy or her childhood friend —, a lot of angst, they get back together after some overly dramatic and unnecessary scheme made by side characters who's existences are based solely around creating drama for the main couple, and she ends the last chapter of the story with a really cheesy and sappy line about loving the Bad Boy™ that usually has the title in it.

Oh, and also, this story usually goes hand-in-hand with tropes like: cheerleader and football player/quarterback, new girl and popular boy, nerd and football player, nerd goes through physical changes that ultimately make the whole school hate her. Just to name a few.

I can never, will never, understand the obsession with this trope. It's toxic and warps the opinions young readers have about romance. I used to be one of these readers, I try to block out that dark period in my life, and it wasn't until I was exposed to actually good literature ( I.e. fanfiction ) that I realised how horrible they really were. I swear I tried to read After a few days ago after watching the movie and I could not get past the first chapter. It was that bad.

And okay, there might be one or two okay stories, but nearly all of them follow the same vicious, abusive cycle and it frustrates me so much. If you read my last update you'll know that I literally want to write an unproblematic, non-abusive, well written, well titled story about a good girl and Bad Boy™ that portrays a healthy relationship, actual character development, and side characters that have meaning outside of the main couple.

I just want to see the downfall of this shitty trope and if that means doing it from the inside-out then I'm down.

Catch me a week later having given up because the motivation train skipped my station again.

If any of you disagree with anything said in this rant, please leave a comment explaining why so that we may engage in a civil discussion about why you are wrong. No, seriously, if you don't agree and wish to defend this trope we can debate and I'll see if you can change my mind. Fat change, though, as I hate this trope with a passion that burns brighter than the flames of hell and I don't think anything will change that.

     Good luck, I guess.

     See you!
