A lot of us want the world coated in rainbows and glitter with never ending cupcakes that don't make us fat.  We want to love and give love and skip off in the field of wildflowers into the sunset.

In order for stories to be interesting, believable, and show character growth bad things must happen.  We have to make our characters uncomfortable and give them pain.  When I first started writing, I didn't make my characters suffer alot.  Bad things happened but I kinda quickly fixed it or glazed over it without detail.  It wasn't until I read something by Azruek where I started to realize that I don't make my characters suffer enough and they needed to.

I started reading other hardcore stories where characters suffer-a shit ton.  (It's how I figured out I can't read gore...at all...and that labels matter.)  Somewhere in there I figured out how to make my characters experience pain and difficult situations that would help make the story more interesting and showcase character growth.

There's nothing wrong with fluff.  It has its place.  And I know for some younger writers writing painful/bad stuff might be hard cuz you're still wearing those rose colored goggles.  It's cool.  You have time to join the darkside. (cue evil laugh)

But EnderXen's correct that writers have to let bad things happen.
