Crossover fics are always fun to read and write, but there's a few things to remember before you publish them.

My first piece of advice would be to actually read some crossover fics for the fandoms you want to cross. Whether that's Supernatural and Sherlock or It and Stranger Things. There's crossover fics for basically anything on either AO3 or Wattpad.

If for some reason, there isn't any crossover fics to glean some information off of, then here's another lesson.

Crossover fics aren't hard to write. You're just making it hard on yourself.

Whether you follow one of the show/movie storylines or try to come up with something on your own, the characters shouldn't be your problem. If you're writing the crossover, then you see the potential for it. You see the possible chemistry between characters and how well they'll fit together. So write that. Write all the inside jokes and the romances. Fit it in somewhere and show the audience why this crossover exists in the first place.

All in all, there aren't many concrete rules concerning crossovers. Stay true to the characters, have a good storyline, and make sure that there's an actual reason for the crossover. If you do that, then things will be okay.
