I did research for this let's go!

I often find while reading kissing scenes that people are scared to either make it too vulgar, or not vulgar enough. Often times, the perfect way to write a kiss, is smack dab in the middle of the two.

Do's

1) Metaphors are amazing! It's better than being blunt, and forms a better picture

2) Tension. A true kissing scene consists of the tension before the kiss, the emotions during, and the reaction after

3) Watch the psychology. Kissing is more than just a physical thing, whether it means love or not. What are the characters thinking? What do they want?

4) Your characters are different! Each character is going to react/think of this moment differently. They may share the same feelings, but that doesn't mean their thoughts are exactly the same

5) Senses. There's more to a kiss than the touch of lips. When you're that close up and intimate with a person, you'll notice things. Their breath, their face, their eyes. You could even notice different things around you

6) Remember the body. Are they sitting? Standing? Where are their hands? What are they wearing?

7) Think about experience. If this is a first kiss it won't be a french, it won't be super steamy, and it won't be super long. If this is their 1,000th kiss, this could be completely different. No one's going to be perfect at kissing the first time, it's not how it works.

Don'ts

1) Don't over-describe. Don't dedicate three whole paragraphs to one kiss. If there are several different movements, or a big leadup, it's different, but if it's a normal kiss, it doesn't need groundbreaking detail.

2) Don't under-describe. I know, it's a fragile line. If it's not their first kiss, if they're in a relationship and this is normal, you can say it simply. But if this is a big moment for them, don't write the entire thing in a single sentence. There's always going to be so much more to a kiss than that.

3) Don't forget they have bodies. Don't forget to describe what their bodies are doing, if their eyes are open, where their hands are, their position.

3) Don't make it perfect. You may believe the kiss is perfect, and you may feel that spark, but kisses are interesting things. First kisses are awkward, last kisses are sad. Kisses in the middle are safe, gentle, familiar. Every kiss is going to be different, not perfect, different.

4) Don't forget character boundaries. Don't allow a character to be pushed past their comfort zone, don't forget what the character is and isn't comfortable with.

Request are open and so is asking questions!
