The following pictures show some of the signs of autism spectrum disorder. Not every person will exhibit every sign, and some will show a sign mildly or stronger than the graphics list. These are generalizations.

I want to note that there is a huge difference between a tantrum (which is thrown in order to get something) and a meltdown (which is an involuntary and uncontrollable reaction to being overwhelmed, overstimulated, or just over it!)

They use both terms in the following list, though they mean meltdowns.

You'll note a lot of these are based on the perception of the "neuortypical" ("normal") person; for instant "Frequently makes irrelevant remarks". They ar no doubt relevant to the autistic person and you may not realize why.

A lot of these also cross over into other disorders or mental illnesses, too. And again, they are not the same for everyone. For example my daughter does plenty of imaginary play, has incredible expressive language (more so than many adults) and initiates conversation just fine.

I like this next one:

Again, these don't happen to every autistic person, and these don't mean a person is autistic. 🙃
