At the end of class Skyler and I slowly gather up our books and trudge to Mrs. Davis's desk. Mrs. Davis grading papers and doesn't bother to look up when we stop in front of her.

"Um, Mrs. Davis," Skyler manages. When Skyler's nervous you know it's bad, since she's almost always calm and composed. However, we have one of our most important shoots today right after school and we can't afford to miss it because of detention. We also have our perfect student reputation to keep up, but that's the least of our worries. Mrs. Davis looks up.

"Girls." She glares at us sternly. "I think you know that passing notes is against the rules."

"We're sorry," I tell her. I'm a little more calm than Skyler, since this is Skyler's first time being invited into a big shoot, but I also know that if I miss it then Hannah won't let me do another shoot this big for quite a while.

"Well, since you refuse to let me see the note, that's detention for a week," Mrs. Davis informs us. Skyler gasps.

"Wait-no!" I cry as Skyler's eyes start to well up. "No! You can't! No!" Even though we have a huge shoot today, I'm still confused why she's being so dramatic until I remember that last week she mentioned something about a week long shoot for some big brand that bring in so many more requests for her.

Mrs. Davis looks baffled.

"What's wrong girls? Skyler?"

"That family thing," I say slowly, trying to think up an excuse. "It's very important, right?"

"Yes, go on," Mrs. Davis says, clearly confused.

"It, um, we're really busy after school," I continue. "And, um, we missed, uh, one of our activities last time. And our parents were, uh, very upset. So, uh, you see, we kind of can't, uh." Gosh. You'd think someone who's living a lie would be better at lying. But Mrs. Davis is nodding now, so maybe I'm not as bad as I thought.

"Well, what about during lunch?" She asks. I look at Skyler and we both shrug. Mrs. Davis sighs.

"Look girls, I'm trying to work with you here. If you can't do it after school I'm going to assign you detention during lunch."

"Thank you so much," Skyler gushes, wiping her eyes. "You don't know how much this means to me. This is my first-" I step on her foot, which shuts her up immediately.

"Thank you Mrs. Davis," I say quickly, then pull Skyler into the empty hall. Instead of stopping to talk with me like I'd expected, she shoots past me and into the girls bathroom. I follow and find Skyler sitting on the counter texting furiously.

"Sorry about that," I say miserably, hopping up next to her.

"Thanks, you totally saved us," Skyler replies absentmindedly, still texting. I peer over her shoulder to see that she's telling her agent a less dramatic version of the story. I pull the phone from her hand and turn it off before returning it to her.

"C'mon!" I take her by the arm and pull her off the counter. "Let's go enjoy our last non-detention lunch!"
