“Happy one month of being stuck in this place with us anniversary!” Jade shouted as Autumn threw open the door. She hadn’t realized it had been a whole month since that day. She found her hand reaching for her abdomen, her fingers tracing the scar.

“Thanks?” Autumn giggled.

“You know, you still owe me the details of last week,” Jade hooked arms with Autumn, dragging her into the hall and toward Cade’s, before continuing. “I know you claim nothing happened between you and Tate, but come on. That’s just the crap you tell Clarke.”

“Nothing happened, I promise.” Jade frowned.

“Bummer.” As Cade’s office came to view, Jade stopped. “I’m starving. I’m going to grab some breakfast. Bring you something?” Autumn nodded as Jade skipped off toward the cafeteria. Autumn practically sprinted to Cade’s, afraid to be left alone.

The feeling had died down a lot, however, it was still present.

“Hey,” Autumn announced as she shuffled into Cade’s office.

“Look who it is. Everyone’s favorite newbie is one month old,” Cade grinned. Autumn rested in what Cade was now calling ‘Autumn’s chair’ due to the fact that she was there so much. Cade was standing off by the high school lab looking octagonal tables on the far side of the room.

“That sounds so weird,” Autumn giggled. “What’s on the agenda today, caption?”

“Whelp. Today, I am being forced to search for another person Clarke has dropped off. She refuses to tell me exactly why am I playing Nancy Drew, and I am very tempted to trip her with my cane every time I see her.” Cade rambled on.

“I wonder why she’s looking for all these people,” Autumn commented.

“Yeah, me too,” Cade scoffed, stepping toward Autumn and joining her in front of the monitors. “I mean it only takes like an hour or two . . . or three, but still! I’m not her personal servant!”

“Then why do you do them?” Cade shrugged.  Autumn opened her mouth to speak, Cade cutting her off.

“Don’t you dare accuse me of loving her.”

“Oh come on! It’s so obvious! You run around, doing her all these favors-” Autumn stopped when Cade sent her a nasty glare. “Fine. Don’t admit your love for her, hide your feelings forever.”

“I will beat you with my cane, don’t think I’m afraid. You only have one arm and I know how to hide a body. ” Autumn chuckled, her laugh resonating through the room. A groan exploded behind them, Autumn ceasing her laughter.

“Will you shut up!?” Sibella whined, stomping her foot. Her eyes were red, Autumn guessing from crying.

“Will you just go back to your padded walls and stop interrupting the fun?” Cade sneered. Sibella rolled her eyes, a group of specials shuffling past the room. There loud argument resonated through the room, Sibella whining. She sat in the furthest corner of the room, covering her ears and rocking back and forth. An overwhelming thought crossed Autumn’s mind, you can help.

Autumn wasn’t sure what to do. This feeling came over her; she knew she could help; she didn’t know if she should. Autumn was shocked to find herself already making a plan on how to assist her. It was, as if, she became a professional in all things special.

As soon as the group sauntered off, Sibella rose from the ground. Her face was red, tears rolling down her flushed cheeks. Sibella sprinted from the rom. Before she knew it, Autumn was charging to the doorway.

“Sibella!” Autumn shouted. Sibella had just turned the corner, whirling around she headed back.

“What are you doing?” Cade questioned, standing next to Autumn.

“I . . . I don’t know.”

“You don’t know? Whelp, it’s official. You’ve lost your mind.”

“I can’t explain it, okay? I just . . . know I can help.” Sibella came to a halt in front of her.

“Help with what?” Sibella wondered, wiping some stray tears from her face.

“What if I said I could help you with your powers?” Sibella shuffled uncomfortably. “I know there killing you. All you do is hide in your room, only leaving to complain about the sounds and smells that make it into your room.”

“How in the hell could you, a human, help?” Sibella cocked her head.

“I have an idea, but you’d have to trust me.” Autumn’s plan to help Sibella was already forming in her mind. It hit her head on, and now she knew everything.

“And if I don’t?”

“Suffer,” Autumn shrugged, glancing at Cade. His nose was scrunched, his eyes wrinkled, and a dazed look in his eyes.

“What’s in it for you?” Sibella crossed her arms over her chest.

“Someone giving me a shot.” Sibella bit her lip, unsure of what to do. “A chance to prove I’m not worthless.” Sibella seemed to connect, pain flashing in her eyes when Autumn said it.

“Fine.” Autumn shuffled forward, Cade latching onto her wrist and practically throwing her across the room.

“What are you doing!?” He shouted, Sibella flinching.

“I know what I’m doing Cade, I just . . . can feel it!”

“Oh? You can feel it? The last time you felt something it got you shot!” Autumn ripped her arm from his grip.

“It’s called taking a risk. What have I got to lose? I already lost my home, my boyfriend, and one arm,” she gestured toward her sling.

“Your life! They’ll eat you alive out there! Why are you so damn stupid?!” Autumn was hurt. She depended on Cade to be her friend, and right now he wasn’t doing that.

“I’ll answer that when you explain why you never leave your office.”

“That’s not fair,” he shook his head.

“It’s not fair of you to mock me!”

“I can’t help but mock your stupidity! It’s who I am! That so called feeling you have has gotten you shot, attacked, mocked, and injured!”

“Stop shouting,” Sibella complained.

“Cade, you have to trust me. I can’t explain it, okay? But I know I can do this. I know I can help.”

“You aren’t a psychic! You’re just . . . human! You don’t get some correct feeling and all of a sudden you are an expert! You are nothing but a human, you can’t do anything!” His words stung. From the start, Cade had been her biggest support.

He had never had a moment where he doubted her. Cade had always ignored the fact that she was so fragile; that she was human.

“Let’s go,” Autumn said through gritted teeth. She stormed out of the room, Sibella following her toward the dance studio. Cade shouted her name, screaming it at the top of his lungs. However, as she stepped away, his voice faded.

He wasn’t coming after her.

Stepping past the cafeteria, Sibella at her heels, caught attention. A few others followed, curious as to why Autumn was walking around unattended.

Throwing open the door, they shuffled inside.

“So, what’s this mighty plan of yours?” Sibella tossed her arms to her side. Autumn stared at the hole in the wall her arm had gone through. She found herself pausing, the scene practically playing before her eyes. Her arm burned, the memory of the pain fresh. “Hello?”

“Sorry,” Autumn shook her head. She walked to the old radio, plugging it into the outlet behind it.

“What are you doing?” Sibella questioned, fear clear in her voice.

“You have to trust me,” Autumn spun around to face her. “I want you to focus on the sound of my voice.”

“Autumn, please don’t,” Sibella cried. “I-I can’t. I’ve tried to focus.”

“But you didn’t have someone pushing you.” Autumn flicked on the radio. Sibella shrieked, crashing to her knees, hands covering her ears.

“Sibella! You can do it!” Autumn turned the radio up so loud, it hurt her own ears. A few crowded around the back wall, some standing in the doorway. One man tried to intervene, however, a friend held him back.

“I can’t!” Sibella sobbed. “Please stop.”

“Listen to the sound of my voice, Sibella. I know you can do it. You have to fight, okay?”

“I can’t! Stop! Someone stop her!” Sibella screamed.

“You can do it! Listen to my voice, come on.” Autumn repeated over and over. Sibella cursed, cried, shouted, did everything she could to make Autumn stop. It was hard, Autumn wanted nothing more than to stop. Sibella needed this.

“Stop!” Someone in the doorway howled. Some blood trickled from Sibella’s nose. A few stepped forward; Autumn wanted to run. She wanted to sprint down the hall and never look back. But she couldn’t leave Sibella.

“You can do it!” One reached Autumn, digging his nails into her arm.  He yanked her back so hard, she tripped over her own feet and landed on her butt.

“Get up,” the man forced her to her feet.

“Let me go! I’m trying to help.”

“Does this look like helping?” He shoved Autumn. She fell onto her back, gasping from the immense pain in her arm. “Tate and his band of misfits aren’t around to save you n-” A sharp crack sounded, followed by the man smashing to the ground.

Cade stood behind him, wobbling without the support of his cane. He crashed against the wood, Autumn scrambling toward him.

“Cade? What are you doing here?” Autumn helped him to his feet.

“You're my best friend. I couldn’t leave you.”

“You are going to pay for that, Cade,” an even taller man barked, stomping toward them.

“Wait!” Sibella screamed. In the blink of an eye, the commotion was finished. Everyone came to a halt, watching as Sibella rose to her feet. She started to laugh, her eyes wrinkled due to the large smile across her face.  “It worked!”

“What?”

“I can hear!” Sibella touched her ears. “I don’t hear what’s going on three rooms down! I-I hear this room only!” Sibella wiped the blood from under her nose before throwing Autumn into a hug. “Thank you!”

“What’s going on?!” Clarke’s booming voice broke apart most of the crowd that had gathered. Clarke, Tate, David and Jade shoved their way into the room.

“Autumn!” Tate darted toward her. Sibella released her, squealing like a pig. “What’s going on?”

“Autumn’s a hero!” Sibella giggled, running to the nearest person against the wall and giving them a tight hug.

“Cade?” Clarke wondered, standing a few feet behind Tate. “You’re . . .” Cade eyed his friends. Autumn could see the insecurity in his eyes.

“Can someone explain what’s happening? And why some dude I used to hook up with is on the ground?” Jade snapped. David sent her a wide-eyed glare. “Before you, babe.”

“I did it,” Autumn and Cade exchanged glances. Autumn laughed, shocked and happier than ever. She ran a hand through her hair, Cade grinning.

“You did what?” Tate’s eyebrow raised. Sibella let out a high pitch cry, jumping up and down in excitement.

“Thank you Autumn!” She shouted.

“What did you do?” Clarke angrily spat.

“Proved she’s more than just a human.” Sibella smiled.
