Jack walked into Jacobi's Deli where the other boys were hanging out. It had been a week since the night with Katherine on the roof and he decided to enlist the day after. He hadn't told her yet because he didn't want her to worry. I have to tell them now. I'm leaving in two weeks. He asked Katherine and the boys to meet him here today so he could tell them all at once.
"Why did you want to meet us here?", Davey asked. Jack felt butterflies in his stomach. He really didn't want to tell them. Jack took a deep breath and said, "I'm leaving." Everyone fell silent immediately. Katherine was the first one to break the silence. "You're leaving?", she asked sounding hurt. Jack nodded. "Why?", Les asked. "I uh... "Jack hesitated, "joined the army." Katherine looked upset and the boys were shocked. This time it was Davey who spoke. "Are you going to Europe?", he asked. Jack nodded. "Jack", Katherine said, "We talked about this."
"Yeah, I know and it's my decision", Jack replied. "When are ya leaving?", Race asked.
"Two weeks."
"Are you going to Europe?", JoJo asked. Jack nodded. "You're going to fight in the war?", Les asked. "Yeah, But don't worry kid", Jack said ruffling his hair, "I'll be fine."

Two weeks later
Katherine stood on the roof with Jack. "I wanted to do something before I leave tomorrow", Jack said. "What is it?", Katherine asked. Jack reached in his pocket and took a small object out. "I've been wanting to do this for some time now", he said nervously. Jack bent down on one knee and held up a ring, "Will you marry me, Ace?"

Katherine covered her mouth, tears forming in her eyes. "Oh yes, Jack! Yes!", Katherine exclaimed, tackling him in a hug.
