[summary]
you're tired of being the one who needs saving so you asked your boyfriend, finn, to train you, but finn, with his overprotective nature, is hesitant about it.

[warning/s]
nothing!

[notes]
very proud of this one. i just like to imagine myself living in finn's world. idk what creature i would be but i'm already satisfied in finn's arms tbh - super cheesy but enjoy it nonetheless!

***

A knock on the door made both Finn and Jake's ears perk up in curiosity. "I got it," The boy stood up, slid down the ladder, and skip a couple of steps until he opened the door.

Finn's blue eyes lit up when he sees you, carrying a basket of goodies all the while balancing a few books on top of your head. "Hey, Finn."

"Y/N! It's good to see you again," He said as he removed the books off of your hair to assist you. "Did you read the book I suggested?"

"Duh, of course I did! Gotta admit the beginning was a bit boring but the ending really made it all worth it!"

The two of you reached up the second floor. Jake was just standing up when he sees Finn with you. "Oh, what's up, Finn's lady?" To which his brother subtly gave him a panicked look and a hand motion saying to 'cut it out'.

You didn't seem to mind. He was probably just joking around, so you let out a small chuckle. "Hi, Jake. Want some cookies? They're freshly made." You proudly presented your large basket of biscuits and other bread.

Finn went ahead and prepared the hot chocolate as he was supposed to. As he was setting the kettle on the stove, he heard Jake exclaim the name of his favorite pastry. "No freakin' way! Mmm! Tasty! You're my new favorite person, Y/N."

Before you could reply though, Finn cut you off with a "Jake, aren't you supposed to be meeting with Lady today? Right now?"

"Oh, right. Hey, Y/N, can I have some more for me and my Lady? I bet she'll love it!"

You happily obliged. You dumbly asked how he was going to carry it but forgot that Jake is one stretchy dog. The yellow creature easily scooped the snacks in his hands and flew out the window.

The room was silent now, it was just the two of you. It wasn't awkward though since you and Finn have been going out for weeks now. Every afternoon, you would go and bring baskets of goodies while Finn decides what to drink. Sometimes it's the other way around. You then talk about what you would do the next day.

Yesterday, Finn wanted you to read his favorite book and you read it overnight and replayed the moments that made an impact on you.

Finn was watching his marshmallow melt when he asked, "What did you like the most about the book?"

"Well," You looked up the ceiling to recall the paragraphs that stuck with you. "I really liked the part when the warrior has this argument with his self-conscious? That was deep and insightful."

"Yeah," Finn agreed. "He was placed on such a high pedestal. Everyone expects him to do so amazingly. He's afraid that if he messed up one bit, everyone's gonna turn against him and stop believing in him."

You and Finn just exchanged thoughts after thoughts. It was mostly you pointing out the details you've noticed and Finn adding his own comments. It was very relaxing, accompanied by hot mugs and sweet pastries.

Finn was playing with your hand while you rambled about the rest of your day before you came here. He listened intently as he felt the warmth of your skin against him. He hummed every once in a while, he was always looking forward to your stories.

"Anyway, I-"

CRASH

BOOM

"What the-"

The two of you stood up and stared at the trashed-up wall in front of you. There floats the Ice King, his beard flapping like winds, and a grin stretched across his face, a face that looks like he's up to no good.

"Ice King!" Finn spat his name with such venom.

"Hey, Finn. Sorry to interrupt your lovely afternoon. Can I borrow Y/N for a moment? We have a date."

Before the two of you could do anything, Ice King zapped his magic and locked your whole body in ice. He swooped in and lifted the block of ice and escaped out of the treehouse.

"Let her go!" Finn called, but nothing happened. He ran after the flying wizard, but his normal boy legs can't outrun them. But he didn't stop. Even when they were out of his sight. The cold kingdom wasn't that far but it is still a running distance. He wielded his sword and trekked the snowy path, his heart pounding as he thought of you helplessly trapped in Ice King's grasp.

You let out a breathe you didn't know you were holding when you felt free. When you tried to walk, though, nothing happened because the lower half of your body was still captured by ice. "Let me out!" You banged your fist against the solid water. "Ice King!"

"Just a minute, sugar bunch, the snack aren't ready yet."

You glanced up at the apron-wearing Ice King, with a spatula in his hand. You were so confused as to why this is happening.

"You know, Y/N, I was hurt when I saw you going out of your house to go to that Finn guy. I'm so much better than him!" He placed a finger on his chin. "Come to think of it, I should've taken your basket of goodies, too."

A huff escaped your lips. Suddenly, an idea popped into your mind. "Well, if you could just let me escape, I could get my basket and we'll all have a lovely picnic!"

"Really?"

"Sure! We can invite Jake and all the princesses-"

"NO!" Ice King exclaimed, his hands spazzing out ice formed in lightning bolts. It bounced off the walls and you shielded yourself if it ever hit you in the face. "I want it to be just us."

"Th-that's cool, too! A friendly party. You and me. Just let me out."

"Okay-"

"Ice King!" Finn screamed from the window. "Let her go!"

He didn't give the wizard a chance before charging towards him, and they fought. Ice King tried to blast him with his powers, but Finn beat him to it, punched off his crown, and kicked his face. When the bearded man was knocked out, Finn ran to you and broke off the melting ice with his mighty kick.

You and Finn shared a smile before the two of you ran away, hand in hand.

"So, which book are we reading next?"

***

Finn decided to surprise you this time, as he was on a path towards your house. He was twirling the stem of a random flower he found in the forest close to your home.

He knocked on your wooden door and waited. But, nothing came. He called your name, but you didn't answer. The boy was about to turn the knob when someone beat him to it. He looked up to see you, but he can already tell that it wasn't the real you.

"Hello, boyfriend." It got your voice, your tone... but Finn still doesn't believe the act.

He pushed aside the rigid body and he already felt the metallic surface, so he figured it was a robot. "Y/N?!" He shouted to the messy home. He marched up to your room and when he opened it, it was thrashed and your curtains were flying because of the open window.

"Everything is alright! I am alright!" The mechanism appeared behind him and Finn screamed as he tore himself apart from her.

"Where's Y/N?" Finn's hands formed into fists. The robot magically transformed into a screen as a man flashed in the display.

"Sup, Finn the Human," an evil-looking professor had his hands wrapped together in a maniacal manner. "I took your girlfriend for an experiment I wanted to try. I'll give her back... if she's still alive! Mwaha-"

The professor didn't get to finish his evil cackle because Finn just punched through the screen. He was breathing so hard from the force he gave to breaking the display in half before he saw an address on the side of the gadget.

He repeated the address until it was etched into his mind and he suddenly felt extreme ascertainment because he has to save you again.

"You're not actually gonna kill me, right?" You nervously laughed as you watched the doctor go around his buttons and levers while you were tied to a pole. "What's the experiment, anyway? Why me?"

"Stop asking questions! Zip!" The labcoat-wearing idiot had his hands behind his back to look professional. "If you must know, I kidnapped you because you're something different. I don't even know what creature you are."

You should've been offended, but you're really just clueless. "I'm-"

"Shush! Just be quiet! You're annoying me very much!"

"Then let go of her, you butt!"

"WHAT!"

You and the professor snapped your heads to Jake and Finn bursting through the wall, with the dog's huge mass. Jake launched Finn with his hands like a catapult towards you, and the boy landed awesomely after doing a flip. He sliced the rope with his sword like it was cheese.

When you were out of the binds, you wrapped your arms around Finn in a tight embrace. He held your waist and smiled as he hugged you back. When the two of you broke apart, Finn still had his arm around you and called Jake. "Let's get out of here, buddy."

"You said it, bro. This place is giving me major heebie-jeebies." Jake drew his stretchy limbs and his hands grew to bail you up like babies. He carried you into his back and get the heck out of here. You found out from the brothers that the treehouse was very far from here so it's going to be a long journey.

You and Finn found yourselves laying on Jake's soft fur, staring up at the shining stars. You grew quiet, laid beside Finn who was humming a tune. You let out a tired sigh because it was quite an exhausting day.

It was as if Finn read your mind when he scooted close to you and said, "What are you thinking about?"

Another sigh escaped your lips as you stared up at his concerned eyes. She sat up from the yellow skin and hung her head down. "I'm so sick of being the damsel in distress, all the time. I feel really bad, and I'm sorry Finn. I'm sorry for being so weak and dependent and I'm sorry for the number of times you've saved me. I appreciate it so much, but I've felt like I'm wasting your time because I'm always getting in some kind of trouble."

"Hey," Finn sat up as well. "It's not your fault. It was never your fault."

"If only I learned how to-" You gasped as if a lightbulb appeared on top of your head. "That's it! Finn!" Your head twisted so fast it almost gave you whiplash, if it wasn't the adrenaline coursing through your veins right now. You placed both your hands on his shoulders as you flashed him an exciting smile. "Teach me how to fight!"

"What?" Finn said. He heard you the first time, he just didn't know how to process it yet.

"I want to learn how to defend myself, and where better place to learn than my boyfriend? Come on, Finn!"

He produced an uneasy sound but he couldn't say no to your sparkling eyes. He gently removed your hands off of him and instead held it, giving you a small smile. "Alright. We'll start tomorrow."

***

When Finn and Jake successfully returned you to your home, making sure you have your windows and doors completely shut and locked, the two brothers were now on their way to go back to their own home.

"Dude, you sound way too unsure when you agreed to train Y/N." Jake pointed out.

Finn slumped his body forward as they continued to walk. "I don't know, Jake. I just don't want her to be in danger. I'm all for wanting to teach her the basics, but..." He sighed in defeat, he can't seem to properly put his emotions into words.

"Well you better say it to her as soon as possible, or don't treat her like a baby in practice," Jake said before opening the door to their treehouse home.

***

The next morning, Finn found himself playing with a random stick lying on the ground and drew symbols on the dirt.

"Finn!"

He looked up to the sound of your voice and his face heated up when he sees you, in the clothes you don't regularly wear on afternoons with him.

i got tired of describing

feel free to change anything! i'm just more comfortable with these types of clothes.

"I'm so excited to train with you!" You said, setting down your things. Finn stood up and the two of you exchanged your hugs. "So, what do we do first? Fighting? OOH-"

"Uh, why don't we start by doing some warm-up exercises? You know to stretch our bods?" The thought of telling you the thing he wanted to tell you completely left his mind when you stood in front of him.

"Oh, good idea! I was so excited I feel like I could die!"

The thought came rushing back to his brain like a tsunami. Finn sweatdropped and they aren't even starting. He suggested doing jumping jacks and you agreed, facing each other, and beginning to jump and down in sync with him as Finn was doing the counting. However, he couldn't help but imagine horrible monsters you might encounter and the possibilities of you getting hurt flashing across his mind.

"Finn?" The said boy shook his head, his vision refocusing on your concerned face. "Are you okay?" You asked while still jumping with him.

His distraught face was replaced with an apologetic smile. "Oh, I lost count."

"It's fine. I'm pretty sure we reached like 50 jumping jacks." You shrugged off. "What's next? Can I learn how to hold a sword like you now?" Pretty sure stars emerged in your eyes when you said that.

Finn slowly rubbed the back of his neck. "I was thinking we could practice... uh, doing stretches next."

You were confused but did it anyway, doing rounds of limb extending and bone-cracking exercises. You laughed when Finn misstepped and tripped over a pebble, and he let out a few carefree chuckles as well.

While doing standing side bends, still facing each other, Finn smiled at you. "We could do the rest of the training tomorrow. You know... in case you strain yourself from all the stretching."

He wanted to punch himself. He was doing the exact thing Jake was telling him about; treating you like a kid.

You synchronously bent to the left, then to the right. "'Part of the hero's job is to get up even if you're constantly getting knocked down.'"

Finn remembered the quote from the book he suggested and he smiled playfully. "Hey, I'm just going to teach you basic self-defense. Don't go all hero stuff on me."

While you were laughing at his banter, you didn't see the nervous expression plastered on his face. When he stopped doing the bends, you stopped too and waited for his next move. "There's this new game that BMO wanted us to play. Wanna go inside? I'm sure you're tired from all that training."

"I'm not tired, but I can go for some video games."

***

Finn let out a sigh as he scratched the side of his fuzzy pajamas.

"What's wrong, bro?" Jake asked from the bathroom wearing double towels for his bod, and another towel for his... hairless head. Well, anything's possible for Jake. "How's the training?"

"I didn't tell her. And I treated her like a baby."

"Oh no." Jake frowned. "Two wrongs don't make a right, Finn. You gotta tell her that you don't want her to do this action thing because you don't want her getting hurt!"

"I will, Jake. It's just that... she looked so excited learning all the fighting gist. And I forgot that I'm supposed to tell her that."

"Well, do it soon. I still need to get Y/N's recipe for the puff pastry Lady Rainicorn and I love so much. Good night, Finn."

Jake ascended up the ladder to their bedroom and Finn followed afterward. After doing a backflip onto his bed, he situated himself so that he was facing the ceiling. His hands were behind his back as his mind wanders to the realm of imagination...

He didn't know that when he came back to the real world, it's gotten so quiet and dark. It was as if something had control over him when he blindly reached for the telephone on his bedside table. Finn sat up a bit to see the numbers better even if the only light he has was from the moon shining through his window.

RING

RING

"Hello?" Your groggy speech resonated through his ear.

"Hey, N/N," Finn replied with a low voice. "Did I wake you up?"

"No, it's fine," you sounded much more awake than before. "What's wrong?"

Is this the chance to tell you that training has to stop because he cares for you so much?

"I..." He began. He rummaged a bit to get under the covers and leaned on his left side where the phone was. "I was just wondering if you feel anything hurting from earlier?"

"Finn," he heard your tired smile. "I'm fine. It's not like it's my first time. I've been doing morning jogs since I was like... 12 or something."

"Oh, that's good to hear." Finn faced the ceiling again. "Good to hear."

"Can you hear that I'm kinda tired though?" You lazily chuckled into the phone. "I would like some sleep if you don't mind. Unless you wanna... talk about... something..." You mumbled, trailing off and leaving the conscious world for a bit until you felt like you just fell out of a building. "Ah, I'm awake!"

Amused, Finn chuckled. "Okay, you can go back to sleep. I'll see you tomorrow, alright?"

"Mmh, mah..."

He placed the phone back and laid down, his hands intertwined on top of his chest. He stared at the wooden ceiling and closed his eyes.

***

Finn was rummaging through the treasures found on the first floor of the treehouse. You insisted that Finn should pick a weapon for you. He didn't want to, but he just couldn't resist when you use your charms against him. You were idly standing there, watching him as he scoured the gold and gems.

He found a big metal shield under the coins and brought it up for her to see. "Here. You can hold this one while you wait for me to come save you."

You tilted your head. "But I kinda want the offensive, killing type of weapon. Besides, that thing's too heavy for me to carry anywhere!"

"Hm..." Finn placed a finger under his chin. "Good point" He let the shield drop into the ground, producing a very loud CLANG. "Uh..." He travels to other parts of the wealth pile and discovered a battleax.

You let out an exciting sound. "Yeah!"

"Nope." Finn replied without missing a beat, throwing it elsewhere. Before you can ask why, he told you it was too huge and heavy which was confusing, since, Finn could easily hold it with one hand.

You shoulders slumped. You were peering behind his shoulder when Finn spotted a poorly constructed wooden sword. "Aha!" It shares the same length as your ankle. "This is perfect!"

"Wha-" You caught it when Finn tossed it towards you.

"It's a practice sword before we can find you a real one." Finn glances at the sword in your hand and paused. "Wait," he sprinted up the ladder and went back in 10 seconds with a rag. He took the sword from you and wrapped the cloth around the handle, tying it into a ribbon. He gave it back to you when he made sure it was fastened tight. "To avoid splinters!" Finn raised a thumbs up with a reassuring grin on his face.

You didn't reciprocate, only giving him a small smile.

You followed Finn outside to the plains as you swung it left and right. Your face is scrunched up in a pout, but you didn't want it to ruin your mood completely.

***

"Okay, make sure your thumb is above your fingers so it won't easily slip off."

You did without saying a word.

"That's it! Now swing it into this tree bark. Be careful."

Effortlessly, you struck your weapon on the side repeatedly until some of its skin peeled off. You and Finn watched as it was torn down pathetically.

"You did so great!"

He sounded so thrilled that the corner of your lips lifted up a bit.

"Hey, you two!" You looked up at the treehouse and see Jake by the window with a plate. "Y'all want some bacon pancakes?"

"Oh, will you look at that? Great timing, Jake!" Finn turned to you, his smile unmoving. He placed his hands on his hips. "We've done so many training, I'm sure tired."

You furiously checked the watch and saw that it's only been 20 minutes. He already turned his back to pick up his things, "Okay, what's wrong, Finn?"

"Huh?" He reverted his gaze at you.

Your eyebrows furrowed. "I'm pretty sure we've done- like a thousand stretching exercises already. And you gave me this lame wooden sword- which you covered the handle with a rag! - because I know you couldn't trust me with a real one! What is it?"

Finn shrunk under your scrutinizing stare. He had to avoid it so he wouldn't get vaporized.

"I..."

You waited.

"I'm sorry, Y/N. I'm so sorry. I know you felt like I haven't been taking seriously but it's because I'm scared." Your face slowly softened. "I'm scared and I don't want to see you get hurt."

You felt upset again. "Don't you think I'm worried, too? I don't get kidnapped all the time. I still get worried sick every time you run off to do what PB assigns you to do."

"I'm fine!' Finn gestured to himself. "I'm a fine human boy!"

"Finn. Human or not, you can still get hurt badly." Before he could retort another reply, you stopped him. "What if it happens so suddenly? You're gonna leave me here, wondering, unaware that you're already dead, forcibly taken away from me. Just like that."

Finn became silent. His heart dropped like an anvil, like the heavy shield he picked up earlier. He didn't know you felt that way and hearing you say those things made him realize that the both of you are the same.

The two of you stood apart on the green grass, wind flowing.

"I wanted you to teach me so I can fight beside you!" Your tone wasn't angry. "You don't have to save me every time, I could just kick the perpetrator in the face!"

That made Finn chuckle shortly, but he looked back down. "You know, this might sound super weird and I hate it when you're in danger, but... I love saving you." He hung his head as though he's ashamed. "I love protecting you. I have this sense of need that comes over me whenever you're in a bad situation. Does that make sense? I don't know..."

Your shoulders relaxed and your frown was replaced by an amused smirk. "Oh, Finn."

His head lifted up to see you striding towards him. "Huh? Did I say something wrong? I made everything weird, didn't I?" Finn rambled. "Y/N, I-"

Your hands were on both sides of his face and crashed his lips into yours. It was the first time you shared a kiss and honestly, why didn't any of you did this sooner?

It was a short one, but the contact sent tingles around your body that it almost gave you goosebumps. It brought smiles on both of your faces and when you leaned back, you watched as he still looked dazed. "Finn, you have this thing called 'Hero Complex'." You giggled, the rush from the kiss still chasing you. "It was in the book we've read, remember?"

"Yeah..." Finn breathed out. "Are you still mad at me?" He wrapped his arms around your waist as you still had your hands on the back of his neck.

You sighed. "I was never mad at you. I was just confused. I know you're doing it because you don't want me to be hurt or whatever. I guess I just wanted to hear it from you."

"Yeah, and I didn't know you felt that way until now."

"You know I care for you, Finn the human."

"Pretty sure I care for you more than you do for me."

"Mmm-" you pretended to think about it. "No!" You ducked under his nose and smooched his lips before running off towards the treehouse. "Gonna get myself a bacon pancake!"

Finn chased after you. "Hey, wait for me!" And the place was filled with joyful laughter.
