"Hey... that's the last of them.", Oscar, Kait's uncle, shouted. "Good job, young ones."

Letting out a deep breath of relief, Del put his gun down to turn to one of the DeeBee corpses. With a small gasp, he grabbed a power cell and pulled it out. Sparks danced around his fingers and faded with a hiss as they touched his dark skin.

JD and Kait walked across the many broken robots, checking if everything was turned off entirely.

Del raised his gaze.

"Oh, shit...", he mumbled in his playful voice. "JD. Incoming windflare."

Confused, JD frowned and followed his friends gaze. A moment later he realised what it meant.

"Oh boy.", his eyebrows rose.

With the deadliest gleam in her eyes, Reyna walked towards the boys. Oscar was right behind her, but did not dare to interfere as she pointed the tip of her blade at JD.

"You promised me you could steal that fabricator without provoking Jinn.", she scolded him and looked at the other two, disappointed.

But Del jumped in for his friend.

"Ma'am, we're you listening?", he asked, almost as angry as she was. "This has nothing to do with the fabricator."

"Then what did you do?!"

JD sighed.

"Jinn accused us of taking her people.", he said.

Del shrugged.

"Yeah, whatever that means."

But Reyna wasn't willing to argue with them about mistakes that had already been made.

"I told you, both of you.", she looked at the two young men. "Don't make me regret taking you in."

Kait stepped forward. In an attempt to calm her mothers neves, she flashed her a smile.

"Mom, you know she's lying. Since when do we care what the COG thinks?", she asked and huffed amused.

With a softer yet still unsatisfied expression, Reyna shook her head.

"When it leads to war.", she put her blades back. "You three. Get the fabricator to the power station and install the invader."

She wanted to turn away but Kait went after her.

"You realise Jinn's coming back, right?", she asked her mother with concern in her voice. "We need to leave. Now!"

With a calm yet deadly expression, Reyna turned to her daughter and looked her dead in the eye.

"Get. The power. Back on.", she said in such a calm voice that JD felt a cold shiver crawl down his spine.

But Kait wasn't convinced by her cold anger. Like a snobby kid, she pulled a face and sighed.

"Fine. Whatever you want."

Without looking at her mother once more time, she stomped away.

Hesitantly, JD and Del exchanged a gaze before packing stuff up an following Kait.

It was already nightfall as the group of three had finished cleaning everything up and fulfilling their tasks. As always, they gathered in the barn and started doing whatever they felt like.

Usually those gatherings were quite cheerful, but Kait's mood was down and JD started to feel restless about the pressing matter. After all, he had promised to meet you at his dad's house.

With a sigh, he turned to Del.

"Hey man, can we speed this up?", he asked, throwing a quick glance over at Kait who was sitting on a windowsill, eating an apple. "Reyna's mad enough as it is."

Del rolled his eyes.

"Yeah, I know.", he responded in an annoyed manner. "It just keeps crapping out. This thing's been through a lot today."

JD grinned.

"Yeah, well it can join the club.", he glanced at Kait. "By the way, I wanted to tell you something. (Y/N) visited my dad this morning."

A noise escaped Del that sounded suspiciously like a snort.

"Oh, first fight in paradise?", he asked.

"Well... can't say I was thrilled. But apparently my dad had a few... concerning things to say."

"So?"

"There was this crystal that he looked at, red, a bit like glass. In his opinion it's awfully close to the one that the Locust had. So... I'm not sure what to do with that information, but be careful, okay?"

Del shrugged.

"Well, if I ever meet one of those in person, I might know why the COG is such a bitch about human safety.", he hit the fabricator with a wrench and winked. "And we can really use this baby."

JD huffed, grinning and turned to Kait.

"You heard me?", he asked.

But she didn't respond. Instead, her eyes were glued to the darkness outside. It seemed like she was busy watching something so he left her alone. She was probably just lost in annoyed thoughts about her mom.

"So, almost done... Okay.", Del sounded satisfied as he did the last few changes. "JD, get on that switch."

JD did as he was told and got into position while watching Del press some buttons and codes.

A power cell appeared out of thin air. It seemed heavy, because as Del grabbed it out of the fabricator he had to huff in surprise.

"Fire it up.", he tossed the cell over to JD so he could insert it into the slot for the village's energy system.

One turned switch and the engine started to buzz and hum with electricity.

"Ha, look at you.", JD gave his friend a bump to the chest to reward him for his good work.

While the boys humoured themselves, Kait was standing at the open gate of the barn. With her eyes squinted together, she started into the darkness.

A shadow appeared only to disappear again a few seconds later.

Struck by sunrise, she flinched.

"Uh, guys?", she asked concerned.

But Del and JD kept joking with each other.

"C'mon admit it.", Del teased him. "You lost faith in me for a second."

JD didn't respond. With a grin on his lips and his arms crossed in front of his broad chest, he just shook his head and had to hold in a laughter.

But suddenly, the power flickered. Sparks appeared. All at once, the lights went out again.

With an even more amused look, JD turned back to Del.

"Did you touch something?", he asked, more as a joke.

Speechless, Del looked around.

"What?", he asked, baffled by the sudden events.

Kait rushed to their sides.

"Something's out there.", she said nervously.

Suddenly, sirens filled the silence. People started to scream.
