Continent-Wide Prison Conditions and Friderich

The Captain took me to a cell in a base a few miles away from the radio station. The drive was completely silent; at least on my end.

The German Captain, however, gloated over my team's failure so many times, that eventually I just tuned him out, imagining instead what a future with Alex could've been like.

A large house in the country. A couple of cats. Plenty of coffee and tea houses. The simple life you know.

The truck lurched to a stop and my dreaming ended, replaced by the reality of the situation I had gotten myself into.

My relationship with Friderich was a bit worse than I would admit to William. Last time I saw him, I insulted him and we got into a bit of a fight.

But hopefully he won't remember that.

The cell they threw me in was concrete, and cold despite the summer heat. I curled up in a corner and tried to sleep. I'd need all my wits about me in the coming days.

I was woken by the sound of other prisoners getting dragged in. I sat up immediately, hands on the bars as I stared out.

Alex and Cap were being shoved into the cell opposite.

HELLS.

This is not how it's supposed to go.

They were supposed to be away and safe.

We just stared at each other until I finally broke the silence.

'So. What happened?'

Alex grimaced, 'There was an agent to be exfiltrated. We met him near that farm we sheltered in and it was all good, but then it turned out he had a tail. We split into pairs and made our own ways to the pickup point. Cap and I were just the unlucky ones who got caught.'

'But enough about us,' Cap broke in, 'How's the wound?'

It was my turn to grimace, 'The German Medic gave me some morphine and a needle and thread. More than I expected really.'

Alex's expression darkened and he folded his arms, glaring at the ceiling.

The cells were silent after that.

The weeks passed in a blue of boredom and bad food. Alex and Cap were both taken out for questioning several times, but never me. I presumed it was because I seemed to know Friderich.

Eventually we were transferred to Berlin. I slept through the train journey, knowing that I'd be meeting Friderich soon; and that I'd need all my wits about me.

The cells in Berlin were much the same as the ones in the Netherlands, concrete and cold, with bad food alongside.

We settled back into our old routine of meals and interrogations.

Friderich came a few days later with his Rolls-Royce and perfectly pressed suit. Compared to my dirty uniform, he looked like a king.

Which I'm sure was the point.

He wandered down the line of cells, ignoring the glares sent his way by various prisoners. Friderich stopped outside Alex and Cap's and stood there for a moment, a slightly puzzled look on his face.

'Damit. Das ist der Mann, der meine Schwester verführt hat.' So. This is the man who has ensnared my sister.

I winced, glancing round Friderich to see if either of them understood. Both seemed confused and I sighed in relief.

Evidently not quietly enough, as Friderich turned around.

'Ah! Alina! Schön dich zu sehen.' How nice to see you.

I frowned, 'Ja. Ich hatte jedoch auf bessere Umstände gehofft.' Yes. I'd hoped for better circumstances however.

Alex struggled to his feet, leaning against the bars, 'Alicia? What's going on?'

Friderich turned round to face him, switching into accented English, 'You see Theodore- I can call you Theodore right?' Alex just glared and Friderich carried on with a chuckle, 'Alicia here hasn't been quite honest with you. You see, her name isn't Alicia, it's Alina Von Lübeck and she's my sister.'

Alex's mouth fell open as his brain whirred.

'Ich glaube, ich habe ihn gebrochen.' I think I've broken him.

I couldn't stop my mouth quirking up into a smile. Friderich may be a fascist-loving Chucklehead, but he's also my brother. And I've missed him, no matter what I've told myself.

'Are you telling me-' Alex's voice was low, 'Are you telling me that you were alive in the sixteen hundreds?'

I swallowed, 'Yes.'

'And that you're German?'

'Yes.'

'And that your brother is best buddies with Hitler?'

I grimaced, 'I can't choose my relations any than you can.'

'I bet you're the one who was behind those missing files back in January.'

Shaisa.

Wide eyed, I stared at him for a moment, then found my voice, 'No! No I wasn't.' But my voice was shaky and I could tell he didn't believe me.

Alex folded his arms.

I turned to Friderich, who was leaning against the wall looking wildly amused as he watched us.

'Bist du jetzt glücklich?' Are you happy now?

Friderich chuckled, 'Warst du, bis er etwas über die Unsterblichkeit herausfindet.' Wait until he finds out the immortality thing.

Then he straightened up and adjusted his tie, 'Well, this has been fun and all, but I've really got to be getting back.'

Alex scoffed.

'Oh, und Alina, der Führer lässt dich Grüßen.' Oh and Alina, the Führer sends his regards.

The entrance to the row of cells slammed shut and we were left in silence once again.

It was almost midnight when I had an idea.

At the back of my cell was a small window, made of opaque glass. I slammed my fist into it. The sound of it breaking drew the attention of Cap and Alex. I could feel their eyes on me.

Several bloody shards of glass hit the concrete floor, the majority of them falling outside. I craned my neck to get a glimpse of the stars above us, then sat down, picking up a shard and pulling my empty Faé stone off it's chain. I'd put it there for safekeeping before our last mission, and just hadn't put it back on my finger.

Taking a deep breath, I sliced my palm open with the glass.

There was a shout of alarm behind me, but I ignored it, dripping the blood onto my stone.

I repeated the ritual until the stone was green and my hands shaking.

Using the same shard of glass, I cut a strip of fabric off the sleeve of my uniform and tied it around my palm. I gave myself ten minutes to recover and then hauled myself up, holding onto the bars of the cell for support.

I held a hand over the lock and whispered, 'Flamé,' not caring who saw me. Friderich had all but revealed it anyway.

My hand heated up and the lock drooped and melted. I pushed the door open and shuffled over to Cap and Alex's cell. I repeated the spell, leaving them to scramble up after me.

I opened the rest of the occupied cells, ignoring their stuttered thanks and moving into the hallway. I stopped for a moment to heal my various injuries, then continued further into the base. I passed a familiar symbol then doubled back, an idea forming in my mind.

I checked both ways. Both empty. I 'summoned' the door and pushed it open.

Sticking my head into the middle of a kitchen somewhere in Africa, I grinned at a startled Eshe.

'Hey wanna come storm a Nazi base with me?!'
