WHY AARON BURR IS MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER IN THE MUSICAL HAMILTON!

You read that right, I love Aaron Burr more than anyone else. Even though Gilbert Lafayette is a close second, I don't think any character can beat Burr in my heart.

REASON NUMBER ONE: Wait for it is the most relatable song to me along with Dear Theodosia. I relate to Wait for it mainly because even though I'm not a patient person, I would rather wait than rush in. And for that, Aaron Burr's wait for it is a beautiful song in my mind. Dear Theodosia... is quite personal. I erm, I was raised by a single father and all I could ever wish for would be that he would be the slightest bit better of a father when he is already the best man I have ever known. I would have loved having more of a foundation. (Especially the reprise is beautiful to me, absolutely gorgeous.)

REASON NUMBER TWO: Aaron Burr is portrayed in a very lovable way. He's an orphan, just like Hamilton, and tries to be rational even if it's really hard on him. He himself says in 'obedient servant' that he has a temper.... admittedly a temper that blows up in his face and kills one of the most intelligent men around him (which I won't justify).... but still. Don't we all have a temper? It's fine when it doesn't make you lash out.

REASON NUMBER THREE: He, unlike characters around, knows he's done goofed (for him after killing Hamilton). IRL, I would never like a person like him but............. honestly, he's young and he literally said, "This man won't make an orphan of my daughter" which like, immediately, YOU'RE FORGIVEN, ADOPT ME! (Now that I think about it, I majorly like Burr for my own slight father issues. The more you know! I guess I don't have anything to say but fuck it at this point, he's still my favourite.)

REASON NUMBER FOUR: The poor man suffers sooo fucking much it's not even... yes it is kinda funny. But really. "Hamilton doesn't hesitate, he just takes and he takes and he takes" might be the most accurate line at first. Burr's glory, Burr's politics, even, to some degree, Burr's mental health all get taken away by the song Obedient servant, where he is just D O N E. Other than that, he lost his wife too young. Way too young actually. The love of his life died and for that, he is kind of like Eliza (Or Hamilton, depending whether you like Lams or not.). Yet again, shooting Hamilton was not necessarily (other than the fact he shot him IRL) but it was a tradition anyway, back then, for those that lost their political careers.

REASON NUMBER FIVE: Aaron Burr tries his damn best. I don't know if I can give this a long paragraph but I damn will try. Burr is really tragic in the fact he isn't enough. He tries and he tries. Burr even says, about Hamilton, "he's got nothing to loose". The Burr family holds pride, he says his mother was a genius (a standard he does not get to, I can assure you, even if I love his character, he is no genius, even if he graduates early. He is completely out of that description, he cannot be classified as anything near as what I dare to call cowardly behaviour is what gets him there.) and his father had respect towards him, a lot of it (something Aaron Burr can fit to. He is respected to some degree by many people for graduating early.) He tries, he damn tries to reach these criteria, obviously, any respected family has the one that wants to live up but can't.... or can, in their own way. Aaron Burr is somewhat someone I relate to on that degree.

REASON NUMBER SIX: Aaron Burr is an adult for most of the musical. Now now, sounds very stupid. "But Eko! It's so childish to shoot someone!" No, it is not. Stupid is the word. He is an idiotic adult with violent acts under his belt. He becomes a child in 'The room where it happens' according to what I have been told my whole life. Because what I will say has been put through me for years. If you can stay silent about what you believe and who you are, you're grown up. Expressing emotion too soon about thing you are not enough to change is childish and stupid. Which, I disagree with strongly but let's go with it. Sir "Talk less, smile more. Don't let them know what you're against or what you are for" is the immediate adult by this criteria and I like adults, characters who act based on their age and their understanding of this world. That why, according to the adults I know, Aaron Burr turns into a child in the second act.

REASON NUMBER SEVEN: The ark change. I have a thing for fallen heroes. Even if Burr was never a hero nor a villain, his actions become villainous in the second act while the first act.... he's an okay guy to anyone who doesn't know about him being the one that shot Alexander Hamilton on July 11, 1804. But anyway. Aaron Burr goes through the extreme after loosing everything and it's BEAUTIFUL. It's tragic, yes, absolutely.... but it's absolutely STUNNING writing. Even if he did many things in his life IRL, it matters, the writing Lin-Manuel Miranda put into this for Aaron Burr is AMAZING. As a lover of theatre and musicals and as someone who did do theatre before getting a huge panic attack, I can fucking appreciate good writing and Burr's character is full of it. His lines are foreshadowing so often it isn't even anything but absolutely beautiful. Someone who payed attention (obviously I did not, I'm as dumb as a rock) could predict so many things from his lines! Lin made a man from history I have huge hatred for and turned him and the second man I don't like into a musical. And that's exactly why I can appreciate this writing!

Eko.
