SAM's POV

~Monday morning, at Sam's house~

I was awakened by the loud music of my alarm clock. Ugh, I just need a few more hours of sleep... why? Why must I get up at such an ungodly hour? I reluctantly got my body out of my bed and rolled onto the floor, literally.

"Ouch. Stupid floor," I said to myself.

While half asleep, I start crawling on my hands and knees heading towards my closet to grab some clothes. After getting the necessary items for my outfit, I crawl into the hallway in search of the bathroom. After a quick shower, I brush my teeth and comb my hair. I slip on my denim jeans, pink t-shirt, and a black jacket. I decide to slip a pink beanie over my head to go with my outfit. Now, I don't usually wear pink because it's the ugliest color EVER, but it was the only clean item I had.

I hear a knock on the bathroom door. It's the MG.

"Sweetie, are you finished? I made some waffles for breakfast," my mama yelled through the door.

"Okay, I'm coming!" I yell back.

As I hear her footsteps walk back downstairs, I exit the bathroom and enter my room. I checked my phone to see a text from my best friend Becca. She wants me to meet her in front of the school to tell me something important. This oughtta be great. Shoving my phone in my pocket, I grab my dark blue book bag sitting on my bedroom floor and head downstairs into the kitchen.

"Good morning, love!" My mom set a plate with one huge waffle on it on the kitchen table.

"Hi... is that for me?" I ask, eyeing the delicious waffle, executing my plan of attack.

"Yes, baby girl. Eat up!" She replies with a huge grin.

"Is that all? Just one waffle?"

My mom rolled her eyes and set syrup on the table. "Stop being greedy. One is enough for you. That waffle is bigger than your big head, and that's awfully big..."

"Wow, mom. Stop flattering me," I replied, rolling my eyes and letting out a huge sigh. "I guess I'll have to deal.

"You're welcome. Now hurry up - don't be late for school, Samantha!"

Psh. Like I care about school.

I devoured my waffle in a couple of bites and hopped in my grey 2007 Chevy Malibu. A sistah definitely appreciates the luxury of having her own car, I tell ya!

~At school, in the parking lot~

I parked my car in the student lot and got out. I threw my bookbag over my shoulder and headed up the hill to the front of the schoolyard. I should've worn a coat. Even though I'm used to New York's winter climate, this winter is going to be colder than usual this year.

As I reached the top of the hill, I saw Becca waiting under the big tree in the schoolyard, waving at me. I gave her a small smile as I walked up to her.

"What's up, girl?" I greeted her. We began walking to the front door of the school.

"I found out some exciting news!" Becca said, clapping her hands and wearing a huge smile.

"What is it now? You found a dress at Von Maur that is just your size with a low price?" I said with much sarcasm.

"No, silly... some more exciting news," she winked at me. "I heard that Chris Travis, the captain of the basketball team, is looking for a date to Homecoming!!" Becca squeezed my arm while screaming with excitement.

"So...?"

"SO, he's looking for a girl to ask to the dance and you could be the one he's looking for!"

"Doesn't he have a girlfriend though?"

"Not anymore; they split up this weekend. Which means he's single and available, chica!" Becca screams again, this time making the surrounding students stare at us like we're crazy.

"Okay. Becca, sweetie. Scream one more time and I will cut your throat. And second, what makes you think I would go to the dance with Chris? That's not possible."

"Sam, are you kidding?! Chris is the most popular guy in the entire school! All the girls want a piece of that, including me. But weren't you the one that had a crush on him since you came to Wesley High? Don't act like you don't want that--"

"Whatever, Becca." I cut her off. "Either way, he doesn't pay attention to me so why bother?"

We walk into the noisy, crowded hallway and spot Diggy and Khalil flirting with a random cheerleader. Typical. We start walking towards them.

"Nonsense! If he doesn't pay attention to you, he will once I'm done with you," Becca said, pulling lip gloss out of her purse and applying it to her plump lips.

"'Sup, Diggy? 'Sup, Khalil?" I greet my guy friends. "I see you've managed to conversate with one of Wesley High's Barbie dolls. I see you chose to actually wear clothes today, Dana. What a surprise."

Dana, the cheerleader they were talking to, rolled her eyes and said, "Very funny, Samantha. I see you decided to look like a girl today. I guess that manly routine wasn't really helping you, was it?"

Ugh, I hate her. Skip that, I hate pretty much every fake girl in this dumb school. They always hating on everyone else because they're pretty or rich, and they flirt with any guy that catches their eye. Lames.

"Whoa now. Stop the hating, you two. It's uncalled for," Diggy says.

"Yeah. Besides, Dana, you're too beautiful for that, girl," Khalil says, winking at her. I scrunch my face up at him and his pathetic act.

"I know," Dana replies with a toss of her hair, "I guess I'll see y'all at basketball practice after school. Bye." She walks away while sizing up the boys as I look on with disgust.

"Why do you guys even talk to her?" I ask once she's out of sight. I'm ready to head to my first class.

"Because she's a girl," Khalil shrugs. "But not any girl. She's a cheerleader. And we're basketball players. Do the math."

"Whatever..." I start walking down the hall and mumbling to myself with Becca right by my side. Diggy and Khalil eventually catch up with us.

"Anyways, back to homecoming..." Becca starts again. "If you don't ask Chris, I will ask him for you."

Diggy looked between me and Becca in shock. "Sam, you planning to ask Chris out?"

"No!! I don't wanna ask anyone out. Dang!" I announce.

"She's in denial, Diggy. She knows she wants to ask him out and she will because I'm making her go to the dance," Becca confidently says.

"Oh word?" Diggy chuckles. "Well, you know me and my dude Khalil can ask him for you during basketball practice--"

"No, guys. Oh my gosh! Stop!" I raise my voice in protest. I start increasing my pace and walk ahead of my friends. They are bugging me right now. I just want to go to my class and start the day already.

"Aww, someone's getting mad," Khalil says from behind me.

"Sam, don't fight the feeling! Just think, y'all can get married and have little basketball babies together." Diggy got jokes now. "Haha, and your kid will be named Chrisamantha Junior!"

I turned around and glared at them.

"SHUT UP! I DON'T LIKE HIM, OK?!"

I turned back around to continue walking toward my class when I bumped into someone's chest.

"Whoa. Watch where you're going, little lady. You aight?"

Y'all won't believe who it was.

Chris Travis, of course...

"Um, my bad. I didn't see you there," I say, "And I'm not a little lady." I cross my arms and look up at his tall athletic frame. At 5'7", I'm nowhere near short, but Chris is still a lot taller than me.

He laughs and flashes a smile. His little posse is standing around him.

"Aight. Well, excuse me. Aye, you're on the girl's basketball team, right? What's your name again?" He asks while eyeballing me.

"I'm actually the captain. I'm, uh, Samantha, but call me Sam," I say, awkwardly looking around.

"Sam. Well, Sam, it's nice to bump into you. I'm Chris, the king of this school, ya feel me? But you probably knew that already." His posse full of dudes continue to give me seductive looks. Eww.

"The king of the school? Ha, is that what you call yourself? Yeah, okay." I roll my eyes and begin to walk past him.

"You better recognize, girl. I run this," he winks at me and licks his lips.

"Whatever you say..." I ignore the rest of his comments and FINALLY arrive at my first class.

~Spanish Class~

When Diggy finally walked into our class, I was already seated in my assigned seat with my head down on the desk. He's gonna hear it from me for those jokes in the hallway. I heard him move his chair at the table across the aisle to my left, indicating that he was about to sit down. I lifted my head off the table, sat up straight in my chair, and turned my neck to look at him.

He gave me a smirk.

"You're so annoying, Dig. That wasn't funny what you did back there," I say with a frown.

"I'm sorry, I had to," he begins. "I saw y'all talking in the hallway. You ask him out yet?"

"No, and I'm not going to. And we weren't talking... I bumped into him, that's all."

"Yeah, okay..." Diggy laughs and takes out his notebook.

"Buenos dias, class! Feliz Lunes, estudiantes," our teacher Mrs. Raymond proclaims while standing at the head of the class.

"Buenos dias," the class all responds.

"I'm going to take attendance, then we'll start..."

I took out my notebook and pencil and looked over a few notes we took last week. Ugh, boring. I slid down in my chair, leaned my head back, and decided to take a short nap. That's what class is for, right? I heard the classroom door briefly open and close. The class got awkwardly quiet, then I heard Mrs. Raymond's voice:

"Class, we have a new student all the way from California that will be joining us for the rest of the year. This is Julie Martinez. Please make her feel welcome."

Regretfully waking from my nap, I opened my eyes to check out the new kid. She was tall with tan skin and curly, brown hair that flowed to her shoulders. She had an interesting outfit on. A white t-shirt with pink lips on it, a no-sleeve jean jacket that was bedazzled with all types of jewels, leopard print jeggings, and black army boots. No lie, her style is kinda swaggy.

"She lookin' good..." I heard Diggy mumble underneath is breath.

"Julie, you may sit in that empty seat back there next to Daniel. Daniel, raise your hand," Mrs. Raymond says. Diggy raises his hand.

The new girl spotting Diggy smiled his way and walked to her new seat beside his. All of the guys in the classroom were checking her out, while the girls were sizing her up with half curiosity half jealousy.

"Alright, students, today will be pretty easy. Read the story in your Spanish book, answer the questions about the story, and do the four workbook pages. This will all be due tomorrow. Good luck," Our teacher announces before claiming a seat at her desk. More homework: yay?

As I started on my work, Diggy was stirring up a conversation with the new girl.

"Hi. I'm Daniel but people call me Diggy," he says.

"Diggy? Hi, I'm Julie. Nice to meet you," she responds.

"You too. So you're from Cali?"

"Los Angeles to be more specific. Born and raised."

"Why'd you move to New York? I think Cali is way cooler."

"Well, my parents are both big bosses of this new company and they wanted to move out here to get more business. I didn't really have a choice, but I can't complain about my family making more money," she laughs.

"For sure," Diggy says, laughing as well. "Do you got any siblings?"

"Nah, it's just me. What about you?"

"I have two brothers and three sisters, but the oldest ones moved out already. So it's me and my younger siblings. We got a big family, but I love it," Diggy says while licking his lips.

"Wow. Is your whole family good-looking like you?"

"Eh, they alright. I'm the cutest one, of course." He pops his collar and licks his lips again. Julie giggles. Lawwwdd.

I decided I should intervene before this chick gets the wrong idea.

"He ain't that cute, trust me. I've known this big-head since pre-school, and the only 'cute' thing about him is his stupidity," I say matter-of-factly.

Julie looked at me confused. "And you are?"

"Sam Goode, captain of the basketball team, and this guy's best friend." I reach my hand across Diggy to give this girl a handshake. She looks at it like it's some alien and rolls her eyes. Oh hell no.

"That's cute. You play basketball?" She asks me.

"Yeah, and so does he," I say. Me and Diggy both look at her.

"Interesting. That's... great. I'm not a fan of playing sports. I was a cheerleader at my old school though," she says.

"Cool. Well, maybe you can try out for our cheerleading squad. They got auditions today after school," Diggy told her.

"I might just do that," she says, grinning at him.

"Cool. It's in the gym. I can show you where that is after class," Diggy offers. "The boys' basketball team practices there after school along with the girls' team."

"Sounds interesting. Do you happen to know the school colors?" Julie asks.

"Black and yellow."

"Cool. Well, I must say, I cannot wait to see the rest of this school and be a part of the Wesley High family." She smiles really big.

"I'll even be your personal guide," Diggy says with a huge smile on his face. Oh, he is feeling this girl way too much.

"Done deal, Mr. Daniel--?"

"--Simmons."

"Simmons. I like you already."

SIGH SIGH SIGH. I don't know about this Julie girl. I'm not one to judge, but I can smell a fish when I see one. Let's see how this plays out.
