A Perfect (Birth) Day

"Guys! Hurry up! This has to be perfect!"

Keefe ran his hands through his already mussed up hair as he watched his friends placing up streamers and balloons. He then glanced at the large banner that Linh was (hopefully) painting the words 'Happy Birthday Sophie' on.

It didn't look promising. The paint was dripping everywhere and already they had to change colors because the light blue paint had run out halfway through the B.

It was Sophie's birthday, and although they didn't usually celebrate birthday's in the elvin world, Keefe had wanted to surprise Sophie with one. He had spent a long time researching how humans usually did their birthdays, and was trying his best to recreate it here.

Biana squinted down at the recipe book. "You want me to make-what now?"

"A cake. Specifically this three tier chocolate one with lemon cream filling and strawberries on top." he pointed down at the picture, which showed an extravagant cake on it, with gooey chocolate running down the sides, and delectable strawberries all around.

"Keefe, I don't even know how to bake, and then you want me to make this thing?" Biana asked, raising an eyebrow.

"I'm sure you'll figure it out!" Keefe said, pushing Biana towards the door that lead to the inside of the house. "Hurry! Sophie will be waking up soon!"

"CHILL OUT!" Tam said from up on a ladder. "We haven't slept all night because you've wanted us to stay up and leave "party things" all over the freaking Elvin world. And right now, I am outside, on the top of a wobbling ladder, hanging up balloons that keep popping, and wondering why I even agreed to help you with this!"

"Agreed," Dex said, coming out into the garden with a covered tray.

"Dex! Finally! You made the custard bursts-"

"Oh, ummm about that-"

He lifted the lid revealing one small measly custard burst sitting alone on the tray, with some strange balls of dough next to it.

"Dex!"

"What?! You know I don't know how to cook!"

Keefe groaned as he surveyed his friends that were still outside. Fitz's hair was a mess, there were leaves and sticks sticking out of it and mud all over his sleeves, on account of the time he was attacked by a squirrel while hooking up the swing set.

Linh's rosy cheeks had lost their glow, and she looked as if she couldn't keep her eyes open a second longer. Her under eye bags were dark and contrasted magnificently with her pale skin. The banner work wasn't going well, she had spilled paint all over the old one and had to start a completely new one now. Her handwriting was so messy Keefe could barely make out the letters.

It seemed Tam had fallen asleep on top of the ladder, balloons all around him, his head tipped at a 45 degree angle, eyes closed, seeming to not care as the ladder shook wildly underneath him.

Dex yawned and Keefe realized that the sun was starting to come up from behind the hill. "GUYS!" he said, and they all turned to face him sleepily. Dex woke Tam up and they stood in front of Keefe like a hap-hazard, exhausted army.

Biana came down the hill with a large covered tray that Keefe presumed held the cake. She plopped it on the covered table and then collapsed face first on the grass, her dress getting stains all over, her hair sticking up in various places.

"Okay, now that we're all here, LINH WAKE TAM UP, let's review the plan! Biana, in the morning you will wake Sophie up and prepare her for the day. You got the hair and the clothes all planned out right?"

Biana gave a half hearted thumbs up from the grass.

"Fitz you'll meet her on the stairs and give her the first clue, okay? Then I'll be waiting outside, and she'll tell me that you gave her some weird clue, and I will say that I'm going to help her figure it out. Got it Fitz?"

"Yup."

"Tam, Linh and Dex, you guys will be at the final destination here, setting up and making sure everything's okay. Got it?"

"Yes."

"Sure."

"snore"

"Biana and Fitz, after you help Sophie, you guys will run around quickly to all the areas with all the clues and double check they are all there and that the things we set up are functioning, got it?"

"Run around? Keefe are you kidding me I'm not gonna run anywhere I'm freaking exhausted-"

"Good! Now hurry to your positions Sophie's gonna wake up soon!"

Keefe watched his friends pick themselves off the floor, and head towards their areas.

'I really hope this works,' he thought. 'I want to let Foster have a perfect day.'

------------------------------

"Foster!"

"Keefe! Wow, I can't believe you are here! Isn't it dangerous to be in front of Havenfield, I mean, isn't Grady gonna come after you or something?"

"I'm sure he didn't see me."

Keefe looked Sophie up and down. Her clothes were normal and plain, white shirt, brown pants, and brown boots. Where was the summer dress that Biana had promised she'd design for this very moment? Where was the braided flower crown she said would be in her hair?

"Hey Foster, did you see Biana today?"

"Oh yeah! Now that you've mentioned it, she looked really weird. Like, she looked really tired, and her hair was all messy and stuff. Then she dragged me out of the bed, shoved some clothes in my arms, lead me to a vanity, sat me down, and then started to do something to my hair. But then she collapsed on the rug before she finished it! I don't know what happened to her."

Keefe began to sweat.

"Oh and speaking of it, Fitz was being weird too! Like he was in front of the door and then he yelled "dinosaur bow tie" and then ran off in the direction of Calla's tree."

Keefe felt the sweat dribble down his back.

"Well then, do you wanna head too Calla's tree to see where he was going?" Keefe asked. He was going to have to skip the first part of the day, in which he had, (after many bites and scratches) managed to but a bow tie on one of the dinosaurs in the Havenfield animal center. He was going to have it dance for her. The day was already taking a turn for the worse.

They walked through the meadow to Calla's tree, and Sophie gasped when she saw the white birch swing set with pink cherry blossoms lining the ropes it hung from. It was also the place where Fitz was attacked by a rabid squirrel. Needless to say, it was one of Keefe's favorite things he had planned for today.

Sophie rushed over to it and sat down. Keefe ran behind her and pushed her on the swing set. Sophie laughed and Keefe felt happier than he had been this morning. Maybe things weren't going to be so bad...

Keefe heard the swing set rope snap before Sophie did and when it did, Sophie flew up into the air, cherry blossoms flying all around her. Keefe rushed over and caught her right before she was going to hit the ground.

Never mind, things were going terribly. 'I though I told Fitz to make sure everything was safe!?' Keefe thought, angrily. 'Sophie could have been hurt.'

"That was so fun!" Sophie said excitedly. "Did you make it that way?"

Keefe had opened his mouth to apologize, but then quickly shut it. "Not really, but it seems like it worked out just fine."

Sophie smiled and Keefe felt his heart lurch.

After that situation, Keefe decided to not follow the clues, because it was likely that Fitz had forgotten to put them in, seeing as he couldn't even work out how to rig a swing set.

The days activities happened in a same manner. For lunch, Keefe had set up a picnic basket in the middle of a field, with lots of Sophie's favorite desserts inside. However, when Keefe checked the inside, he found most of the desserts squished and ruined, and the others were taken hostage by ants. Keefe quickly kicked away the basket as Sophie arrived, and instead, they laid down on the blanket and looked up at the clouds.

The planned alicorn ride was cancelled do to the fact that Grady was there, and Keefe had to quickly grab Sophie's hand and avoid him. Instead, he found a nice sheltered area in a gazebo and instead of going on an alicorn ride through the sky, they talked instead, and watched all the animals in the yard, including the flying alicorns. 'It was nice', Keefe thought. 'But it wasn't anything like what he had planned.'

After a day with similarly disappointing events, Keefe felt as exhausted as the others must have felt throughout the night. It was about 4 o clock, which was the time he had planned for the birthday cake/ revealing of the surprise party day.

He forced a smile when he told Sophie that he had a surprise, but secretly, he felt terrible inside. The day had been completed ruined by some conjoining forces of nature that seemed were against him.

He led her towards the area in which they had planned the surprise reveal, and walked a little ahead of her, just so he could see what it looked like. When he saw, he gulped in nervousness, and tried to turn back so Sophie wouldn't see it, but he was too late.

She had already walked past him, and looked around the garden area, eyes wide with shock.

The banner was droopy and looked extremely hand-made, nothing like the sleek professional look Keefe had been going for. The food on the white tablecloths looked simple, small and messy, extremely unlike the treats in the recipe book. His friends looked exhausted and dirty. Keefe was pretty sure that instead of making last minute fixes like he asked, all of his friends had spent the afternoon dozing in the bushes.

Biana walked up to the tray that held the cake underneath and they all yelled, "Happy Birthday!" as planned. She lifted the lid, and Keefe winced.

The cake was NOT three tiers and was NOT carefully filled with frosting and was NOT decorated with dozens of fresh strawberries.

Instead it was a one tier (one tier was generous) cake with too-thin lemon cream filling seeping out the edges and a tiny, sad looking strawberry placed on top. The strawberry wasn't even placed in the center!

Sophie walked up to it and Keefe held his breath. The others were too tired to really care that much anymore.

She tasted it with her finger and her eyes widened. "It's so good! Who made it? You guys know me so well! You knew that I wouldn't want something super fancy and extra! I'm so glad you kept it simple!"

Keefe could feel all his friends glares, even Linh shot him a tiny look.

"Was the entire day's events all part of this?" she asked Keefe. "The cloud gazing, the talking under the gazebo, the flying swing?"

"Flying swing...?" Fitz questioned.

Keefe gave him a glare that shut him right up.

"I made the cake!" Biana said, raising her hand to take the credit now that it was obvious Sophie didn't hate it.

Sophie went around and hugged all of us.

"Thank you guys!" she exclaimed. "This really has been the perfect day."

A/N IT'S DONE! FINALLY!!!

I know it's not that good, I wrote it in a big rush, but I hope it's okay!
