....

It was at least 2:15 when he arrived home, he sighed deeply as he loosened his tie. He craved his wife, to cuddle up with her, to talk to her all through the night like they used to before all these things got in the way. A faint smile appeared on his face seeing his dinner set up on the glass table in front of the sofa, covered up and waiting for him.

He saw a dim glow of light upstairs and realised she must be asleep in there, initially she used to insist on waiting up until he arrived home until they argued about it. He couldn't see her like that, frail and weak all the time, she needed to take better care of herself.

He sat on the sofa and opened the food she had made him and a smile appeared on his face, rajma chaval, without fail, even after working so hard at her job she would make something he loves. He eats a few mouthfuls but he has no appetite, knowing she wouldn't have eaten properly herself without him.

He rushed to their room, and changed quickly throwing on a pair of tracksuit bottoms and a white top and slipping in to bed beside her. She was facing the other side, making him yearn to see his wife's beautiful face. He props himself upon his elbow and looks over her, grinning in awe. She was so innocent and peaceful in her sleep, her eyebrows knitted together and an adorable pout on her full pink lips making her look like a baby and her hair was tousled over her face. She even acted like a baby, when he reached to stroked her face, her fingers grasped at his in her sleep, and held on tight , as a tiny precious whimper escape her lips. The lamp light hit her skin and he could see something glistening on her skin, she had been crying.

His heart skipped a beat in worry, he just couldn't bear it. He handles the entire weight of the world on his shoulders with no complaints, he does it happily. He knows they are struggling, but that is why he worked night and day, that is why he is dealing in risky things and dangerous things. He could suffer any pain, it didn't matter. But he will do anything to make sure that Avni still has the perfect life, that Avni is never lacking of anything. If she is even slightly upset, he goes berserk. He can't see his angel crying.

He sat up, leaning against the bedrest. He bent down toward her, caressing her forehead as he coerced her softly, "Avi?"

Her eyes fluttered open slowly, frowning in disorientation of being woken up, she thinks she can see Neil as a hazy figure in her blurry vision and sits up quickly.

"Neil you're very late... was everything okay today?" She whispered fearfully, grasping to his sleeve as her eyes welled up again. He sighed seeing her so worried, frowning.

He cupped her cheek and traced her lip lightly with the tip of his finger, gazing at her with so much love that it was untying all the knots in her stomach. Her lips pouts slightly, and he has the urge to kiss her senselessly, taste her again.

"Is that why you're crying Avi?" He murmured wiping away her tears with his thumb, she shook her head no but avoided his gaze. He sighed shakily, a tear rolling down his cheek seeing her this way.

"Avi I've told you a million times... chinta mat karo... mein hu na? Mein sab kuch teek kar dunga..." He brushed her hair out of her face and behind her ear, "Ab bacche ki tarah roh mat... you know I can't see you cry..."

"Woh nahi hai..." She tried to protest but he cut her off, closing his pained eyes.

"Avi... please... I don't want you to worry, thats why I am doing all this... so you can live like all these problems don't even exist. Barosa nahi hai mujhpe?" He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her closer to his side, rubbing her lower back consolingly.

Her mind raced, her bottom lip trembled on the verge of tears again. He huffed in frustration, pouting in annoyance, "I swear, I'm not going to talk to you if you keep crying like this avi..."

"No wait! I'm not crying anymore... I promise..." She tried to wipe her tears, but she shook, her face crumpling as she tried to hide the lone tear that escaped her eye.

He chuckled sadly at her cuteness, tears brimming in his own eyes as he exhaled deeply in defeat.

"it's okay baby..." He whispered, leaning down and kissing her forehead tenderly. He caressed the back of her head and lead her to rest her head on his chest, his other hand wrapping around her hips and lifting her on to his lap. She curled wordlessly in to his side, clenching his shirt in her fist as she choked on her sobs.

"Avi shhhh...." He hushed her gently, rocking her back and forth. He ran through his fingers through her hair, he felt defeated. He had lost a lot recently but it felt like nothing because he had her. But seeing her cry and not being able to change anything felt like he had lost it all at once.

He kissed her hair and his lips lingered there, his tears falling in to her hair, "If only I could steal all this pain from you...."

She squeezed his eyes shut, he had no idea, no idea what she was actually upset about. It would crush him. She weeped louder, and his heart wrenched in panic.

"Hey... avi?" He pulled away to look her, her face red and raw from crying, "What's wrong? Kuch aur hua hai..."

She shook her head no, but he didn't let it go, frowning at her in concern, he kissed her temples as if cleansing her thoughts, as if erasing her worries, he pleaded with her, "Please... don't hide it from me?"

She wrapped her hands around his neck and leaped back in to his arms, burying her face in his neck to hide the way she breaks down in to convulsive sobs. He nestles her in to his arms and cuddles her tighter, patting her hair gently. His jaw clenched in anger, seeing his precious angel hurt and scared, at the thought that somebody might have upset her, "Avi please..."

She shook her head violently in to his neck, whimpering, "I- I don't want to talk about it..."

His teeth lock tightly together, and beads of sweat gather on his paled skin as dread makes him nauseous with worry for her. He tries to pull back to look at her, "Avi if you won't tell me then how will I fix it-"

She clings to him desperately, not letting him pull away, begging him sweetly while clutching to his collar, "It's nothing...Can you just hug me like this? Tight?"

"Okay... okay baby..." He muttered reluctantly, unable to shake the horrid thoughts from his mind. He wound his arms around her waist protectively and sat her more in his lap, as close to him as possible. He picked up a blanket that laid beside him and took a corner in to each hand before hugging her again, wrapping them both up in the blanket when he noticed her shivering. He dipped his face in to her hair, kissing her there softly, again and again, every time she took an uneven breath.

He grabbed a book from her bedside table that she had put a bookmark in. He held her book in front of them both, his arms still enveloping her from behind. He took the bookmark out and indicated towards it, "Come on... read a little bit... don't think about anything else..."

She smiled slightly, and leaned over to peer at the book. He grinned as he admired her in devotion and fascination, she pouted in concentration as she used her finger to follow the words she was reading like a child, her angelic voice soft and careful, "He was afraid and he was waiting for something to come. And all the time, he was looking in the wrong place,"

She yawned, leaning back against his chest and tucking her head in the nook of his neck, "Neil aap padhoge?"

He kissed her neck making her arch in to him, her eyes closing as she smiled in contentment, "Do you ever have to ask me?"

"Because the enemy wasn't out there, " He continued as she presses her lip to his chest half-sleepily, "it had already come inside, into his home. It sat at his hearth."

Her stomach tightened, as guilt consumed her. The line almost resonated, maybe not exactly the same. But he had no idea what she was hiding, and she couldn't bear to tell him.

But she knew she couldn't stop, he was hiding how much trouble they were really in. So that she would live in ignorance, to protect her from the ugly world, he suffered instead, for her. He never changed, if she asked him to take her out, there was no way he wouldn't make time for her. Even right now, after coming home at 2:30 he will still stay up and make sure she sleeps peacefully and distract her.

She was his wife, she couldn't just stand by and watch him deal with this all by himself. She had vowed to stand by him, and support him through everything and she would. She had to do something, but it wasn't something he would like.
