Rosemary Rogers finds a couple of letters displayed in the Smithsonian museum, and decides to surprise both her father and Bucky with this blast to the past. Back in the 1940s when everything was so simple.

Once upon a time, back in what now seems like so long ago, Dorothy Wheeler, Maddox Grayson, Steve Rogers, and Bucky Barnes had been best friends since they were kids. When Lydia Hathaway became part of the group as well as Steve's beloved, they were more than happy for him. But the four had always had such a strong bond where they were more family than simply friends. The boys had Dorothy's back despite the prejudice she experienced due to the color of her skin, and she always had theirs. Perhaps they stuck together because they were all misfits in their own ways. Even when Maddox and Dorothy fell for each other, making Bucky and Steve feel like the third and fourth wheel at times, they'd stayed together.

When the war comes rolling in, they know how much is going to change. Their friendship had survived so much this far, but could it survive this?

Not wanting to loose each other, they swear to write each other whenever they could while apart. Who knew they would become one of the most important things to each of them, a small token of hope and comfort? Who knew how anxiously they'd wait for that letter to come, for some assurance they were all still alive, that they would come back home safe and sound? And who knew that in the future, the letters between the friends of Captain America and himself would become such an important part of his exhibit at the museum for all to see?

Author's Note: this takes place in the universe of my Dangerous Love fic, but the epilogue occurs more after the battle of Ultron. The only elements you'll hear of it is Rose and her mother, but they're more mentioned. Just wanted to let you know this occurs in that fanfic universe, but it centers more on Steve's friendships from the past that he's bound to have told Rose about.
