Part One: Broke

Chapter 1

The Virals Victoria "Tory" Brennan, Benjamin "Ben" Blue, Hiram "Hi" Stolowitski, and Shelton Devers are practicing their Viral "flaring" on Loggerhead Island in Charleston, South Carolina.

Chapter 2

Cooper chases Ben down the beach when Cooper's family appears. They are Whisper, a wolf (mother); Polo, a German Shepard (father); and Buster, a wolfdog (brother). The five then practice their powers and realize that they aren't alone.

Chapter 3

The Virals are needed at LIRI and meet Christopher "Kit" Howard, Tory's father, there. He takes them (and Cooper) home on Tom Blue, Ben's father's, boat, Hugo, to Morris Island. As soon as they get home, Kit tells Tory that sooner or later, they're going to move because Charleston University won't fund LIRI anymore. Tory, outraged, storms to her room.

Chapter 4

Tory chats with the Virals via FaceTime on their computers and they all have the same story. They decide to come up with a plan to stay in Charleston.

Chapter 5

Tory has a nightmare about a French project she forgot about during the night, but in reality she is learning Spanish. Kit prepares a full breakfast that morning and tells Tory they could go to Alaska, but Tory isn't having it. Kit leaves for work.

Chapter 6

The Virals meet in their hidden bunker and talk about how to get money for LIRI. Tory has to leave suddenly because Whitney DuBois is making her go to a cotillion event.

Chapter 7

Tory is wearing borrowed clothes and jewelry for the event. Ben drops her off at "Palmetto Yacht Club. On East Bay." and they find Jason Taylor at the club's docks.

Jason takes Tory to the club, where white tents are set up and rich people dine and talk. Tory suddenly "flares" in public.

Chapter 8

Tory takes in the surrounding when the Tripod of Skank; Courtney Holt, Madison Dunkle, and Ashley Bodford; approach her. Tory stops "flaring" and the Tripod insults her. Tory flees to the actual clubhouse.

Chapter 9

Inside the clubhouse, Tory finds paintings of famous people, including a pirate. A butler, Rodney Brincefield, finds Tory and tells her about Anne Bonny, a famous pirate of Charleston. He also tells her about her famed treasure, which many (including Jonathon Brincefield/Rodney's brother) died. Tory views it as a goal.

Chapter 10

Rodney watches Tory leave and thinks about his brother.

Chapter 11

Tory talks to Cooper about the treasure when she texts Hi about it.

The Virals meet up in Tory's room and talk about the pirate treasure. They begin their search.

Chapter 12

Ben takes Sewee to the docks near the South Carolina Aquarium and Tory leads the Virals through Garden District to the Charleston Museum. In the there they meet Sallie Fletcher and her husband Chris Flectcher. After some bargaining, the Fletchers let the Virals in the upcoming Anne Bonny exhibit.

Chapter 13

As Tory, Shelton, Hi, and Ben walk around the exhibit, Tory finds Anne Bonny's treasure map. Chris tells them about Anne and her friend, Mary Read. It has been claimed that they escaped capture by claiming to be pregnant while the rest of Anne's crew were hanged and killed.

Chapter 14

Tory stares at the map and Chris leaves with Sallie for their Lowcountry Ghost Tours. The Virals then "flare" and detect the scents on the map. They then take the map and leave the museum.

Part Two: Buccaneer

Chapter 15

The next morning, the Virals meet in Shelton's garage and begin to decipher Anne Bonny's riddle on her map. They find that they have to go on the Fletcher's ghost tour to crack clue one.

Chapter 16

Kit forbads Tory from going downtown on Wednesdays. Kit then tells Tory that they will move to Lake Winnibigoshish in Minnesota and Tory explodes. She and Cooper then go outside for a walk when a stranger approaches them.

Chapter 17

The stranger is Shelton and Tory tells them she fought with Kit about moving and Shelton tells her that they have to go to pawnbroker in North Charleston to get a copy of the map.

Chapter 18

The Virals go the pawnbroker's shop and find the map which Lonnie Bates relectantly gives to them.

Chapter 19

Lonnie Bates feels played by because the Virals brought his Anne Bonny stuff. He calls two people, which seem to be his sons.

Chapter 20

A roof deck lunch with Whitney is good for Tory because Whitney's cooking is the only good thing about her. And also hard because Whitney is coming. They eat in silence when Cooper tried to get food. They talk about the cotillion when Whitney accidentally steps on Cooper's tail and the wolfdog tries to attack her. Tory puts Coop inside as Kit tells Whitney that he and Tory will be moving. Tory goes inside as Whitney breaks down.

Chapter 21

The Virals meet in the bunker and talk about the map they found at the pawnshop and find that Anne was ransomed by her father William Corman from prison, and that Anne was held at "Half-Moon Battery". Hi then finds where they can find more information.

Chapter 22

Hi leads them to The Karpeles Manuscript Museum. There they meet Dr. Short and he looks at the copy of Anne Bonny's riddle and says the handwriting is authentic. They also ask him about Half-Moon Battery.

Tory mentions that Half-Moon Battery may still exist. The Virals have to go on the Fletcher's ghost tour to find it.

Chapter 23

Friday morning, Tory has to participate in a church winter drive for her cotillion group. The church is St. Micheal's and Jason brings the bagged clothes in for Tory while Tory sorts them by age range. Suddenly, she "flares" and the Tripod appear. They say that Tory like like the clothes brought in and then Jason appears. He chases them away and Tory's "flare" is gone.

Chapter 24

Jason takes Tory to a seafood restaurant called "The Wreck of the Richard and Charlene" and Tory calls Hi and Shelton when she gets home. They discuss what happened to Tory and they find out that she can smell emotions like wolves while "flaring". The five then head to downtown Charleston.

Chapter 25

The Virals arrive fifteen minutes before the Ghost Tour and find that Marlo Bates, Marlo's brother, and Rodney Brincefield is in their group.

Chapter 26

The Virals learn about Lowcountry lore like Haints (dead souls who take the forms of ghosts), Boo-hags (being who shed their skin in the marshes and roam by moonlight), Plat-eyes (one-eyed phantoms that roamed in people's houses on summer evenings), and Boo-daddies (defenders of people by driving off spirits; they made with marsh mud, Spanish moss, sweet grass, and incubated in marsh oysters). They travel the various sights and finally get to Provost Dungeon, where Anne Bonny was supposedly imprisoned. The Virals try to find a clue, but are cut short because of time.

Chapter 27

Kit grounds Tory after coming in 30 minutes late after curfew (10:00 pm).

Tory calls the Virals and they go to Provost Dungeon again to find more clues.

The Virals go to the Exchange Building and go into the dungeon. They "flare" and find a hole in the wall.

Chapter 28

There is a deathly silence in Half-Moon Battery.

Chapter 29

Tory, Hi, Ben, and Shelton crawl through the hole and find a passageway that leads to two tunnels.

Chapter 30

Tory goes into the second tunnel and begins to walk when Hi finds booby traps. They wonder if there's more traps ahead.

As they reach one with spears shot from a wall, the five find a decomposing corpse.

Chapter 31

Tory examines the corpse and finds that the deceased is Jonathan Brincefield. They take a stone disk off his corpse.

Chapter 32

Tory leads the others through a tunnel and find a chamber with small waterfalls in it. She says that if they give up, the Virals will no longer be based in Charleston. Then, someone tries to shoot them. It is 3:58 am.

Chapter 33

The Virals keep running and stop at a cavern and realize it's part of Anne Bonny's riddle. They use Jonathan's stone wheel to unlock another cavern. It's a dead end.

Chapter 34

The Virals find the right cavern and cross it via a bridge made of wood. They stop "flaring" and they are now in a tunnel.

Chapter 35

The Virals have found the "dark chamber's sluice" and realize they're trapped. When Ben accidentally steps on a weight plate, water comes pouring into the chamber.

Chapter 36

The Virals "flare" and go down a hole in the chamber's floor. They are alive. It is dawn.

Part Three: Bull

Chapter 37

The five meet in the bunker and discuss who tried to shoot them, the riddle, and what to do next.

Chapter 38

Tory calls Sally about more information on Anne Bonny. Sally recommends the Karpeles Manuscript Library.

Dr. Short shows The Virals documents about the Cormac family, where Bonny was from. They find that after Anne married James Bonny, she took his surname as her surname. They also find that Anne's mother was Mary Brennan. They leave and find Marlo and his brother watching them. Tory says that Temperance Brennan can help them.

Chapter 39

Marlo Bates and his brother Duncan Bates watch the Virals leave.

Chapter 40

Tory calls Tempe and asks her to translate some Gaelic phrases for her.

Chapter 41

The Virals gather in Tory's house's living room and Hi mentions that a red Studebaker car went to Morris Island and quickly went back to mainland. Ben mentions a Sewee story that has the phrase "when the night sky burned as daytime", referencing a full moon. Shelton says that the cross they found is a Celtic cross. Tory says that have to visit Chance, since his father Hollis Claybourne, has a Celtic cross relic.

Chapter 42

The Virals drive to Marsh Point Hospital in Wadmalaw Island. Their cover story to get in Chance has received the Human Spirit Award. Once escorted, they are led to Chance, who is in the "artist's retreat." Chance spots them and says that the award is fake and that he can help them find the treasure if they help him escape.

Chapter 43

The five debate on their way back and decide that they'll help Chance. Then the Studebaker follows them, but the Virals dodge it. They make it back to Morris Island on time.

Kit isn't home when Tory gets home.

Chapter 44

Tory has overslept and Kit will be working late again. When Kit leaves, Tory goes downstairs for some coffee.

Mid-afternoon, Tory, Ben, Shelton, and Hi take Sewee to Wadmalaw Sound to sneak in and smuggle Chance out. They discuss the plan and all of them "flare". They break into the hospital swiftly and undetected and break Chance out.

On the way back, Tory asks Chance for the Celtic cross and Chance says he needs "a place to crash until I figure out my next move." Tory hides Chance in her room.

Chapter 45

Whitney has come for dinner and has brought take-out barbecue food. Kit tells Whitney and Tory that he, Tory, and Whitney will move to Alabama. Tory, in anger, asks to be excused and storms to her room.

Tory flees to the bathroom and the Tripod follows them. Tory scares them by showing them her "flaring", gold eyes and they are freaked out. Tory, in a panic, leaves the event.

Chapter 48

Kit allows Tory to gather her thoughts before he goes to work.

The Virals meet in Tory's living room and head to Hollis' private house.

Hollis' private house is on Sullivan's Island. Ben drives there via Sewee and Chance leads them inside. Chance tries to open the safe in there.

Chapter 49

Tory opens the safe and finds the Celtic cross relic inside. She also gets an email from Tempe about the translation. Ben think the "Island People" are from Bull Island or "Oneiscau"/Island People. He also says that "moon's high day" is a full moon. Suddenly, people approach the mansion and the six escape back to Morris on Sewee.

Chapter 50

Tory makes her and Chance mac-n-cheese, since Kit and Whitney are on a movie date.

The group meet via FaceTime and Ben tells them about the Sewee people on Bull Island and Bull Island's Civil War history. Tory shuts down her computer as Kit comes home.

Chapter 51

The next night, the six head to Bull Island on Sewee. They head to the northern part of the island and dock there. As they walk through, they find a pack of three red wolves. Tory internally calls the alpha White Muzzle. She uses her "flare" to drive White Muzzle's pack off.

Chapter 52

The six walk to a high dune and Tory looks through the curve in the cross to find their location. It's Boneyard Beach, a beach littered with dead trees.

Chapter 53

The Virals and Chance head to Boneyard beach and start digging. They find the treasure chest.

Chapter 54

The six are about to open the chest when Chris and Sallie Fletcher corner them, interrogating them about how the Virals found Bonny's treasure first. Since they are CU students, they need to pay off student debt. The Fletchers are ready to shoot.

Chapter 55

Tory, Ben, Shelton, and Hi "flare" and attack the Fletchers. White Muzzle and his pack do the same thing too at the same time. The Fletchers still attack, but they are extremely injured. The six escape and White Muzzle's Pack disappears into the night.

Chapter 56

On Sewee, the six open the treasure chest and find nothing inside.

Cooper tries to comfort Tory and Tory figures that Anne Bonny left more clues. She looks at the rocks and leaves in the chest.

Chapter 60

The Virals meet in Shelton's garage and Tory convinces the boys to continue hunting.

The stone and leaves come from Dewees Island.

Chapter 61

As Tory leaves for Dewees Island, she comes across Chance in the front of her house. He confronts her about her powers and she says he isn't well and directs him to Marsh Point Hospital.

Chapter 62

As Tory, Ben, and Shelton talk about Chance's mental health, Hi informs them about the Fletcher's deaths via the radio.

Chapter 64

The five head to Old House Lagoon and head to an old church there. They find a hole in the door of the building's rear and look inside it.

Chapter 65

There's treasure in the hole and there also Anne's letter to Mary Read there. Suddenly, Marlo and Duncan have the Virals at gunpoint.

Chapter 66

Dr. Short is also with Marlo and Duncan. Tory asks why and Short sneers that it's for money. tory deduces that Short murders the Fletchers. The Virals "flare" and chaos ensues.

Chapter 67

The Virals stop "flaring" as Duncan holds them at gunpoint. Tory suddenly shoots Duncan and Sergeant Carmine Concoran shows up. He arrests everybody, excluding the corpses.

Chapter 68

The police interview the kids and the authorities when Kit shows up. Furious with Tory, he takes her home.

Tory explains to her father she found the treasure because she doesn't want to move. Then she finds Rodney Brincefield and says that the Virals found the treasure because of his brother, Jonathan. For further research, Rodney tells her to look up the "Abbey of Kells."

Chapter 69

Dr. Short, Marlo, and Brandon are arrested and the Virals meets later via video chat and says that probably won't be moving at all. Tory tells the boys that the pages they found were from the Irish Book of Kells ("an illustrated version of the Christian Gospels"). There are some pages missing, and no one has found them. Until now.

Chapter 70

Kit gets home and discovers the Celtic cross and Tory tells him about what happened to her and her friends. Tory tells her father that they will stay on Morris and Kit says that she has to finish cotillion.

Anne Bonny's Riddle

Down, down from Lady Peregrine's roost,

Begin thy winding to the dark chamber's sluice.

Spin Savior's Loop in chasm's open niche,

Choose thy faithful servant to release correct bridge.

On moon's high day, seek Island People.

Stand high watch, hold to thy faith, and look to the sea.

Let a clear heart guide you through field of bones.
