While Hugo continued his chores, Sir Addams realized that Princess Sophina would never fall in love with one of his sons if she knew about Hugo. Sir Addams decided to keep his stepson even busier than ever.

Hugo was given twice as many chores as usual. He had to help with his stepfamily's skates and costumes. Hugo was so busy that he didn't have time to make his own costume or fix his own skates.

By the time Hugo had finished, the carriage had arrived to take Sir Addams and his sons to the palace.

"Hugo, you're not ready, my boy," Sir Addams remarked, pretending to be surprised.

"I've decided I don't want to go," Hugo declared, hiding his disappointment.

"Is that so?" Sir Addams asked. "I'm sure there will be other times."

"I suppose," Hugo stated, keeping a brave face. "Good night, and have a good time."

Hugo took off to the garden. It made his stepfather and stepbrothers so happy to see him unhappy.

When the carriage took off, Hugo stayed behind in the garden.

"Oh, why did this have to happen to me?" Hugo sighed. "It's just not fair. I'm the one who has to do all the work, and Vincent and Roderick get to have all the fun."

Hugo had never been so sad in all his life, and he sadly started to sing.
