Welcome to the guidelines for MemoryMaze (or MM for short)!

MemoryMaze is best used for horror or angst based stories and is usually good for short stories or oneshots.

The basic concept of MM is a character (now deemed the player) enters the maze-like dungeon with only a single torch to light their way and the objective is to survive and escape. If the player escapes the maze without remembering the memory inside, they win. Its somewhat similar to Amnesia, Silent Hill, and SCP.

Inside the maze is the most important memory that the player has forgotten. It can be a character, object, or event that happened to them. The longer the player stays in the maze, the more they will remember the memory. The memory can also be more intense the closer the player gets to the end.

The setting of the maze in MM are pitch-dark, blank, plain hallways and rooms of cracked stone. The mazes seem very ancient with dust collecting and mildew forming in places. There are cracks in the ceiling of the maze that allows small amounts of moonlight to shine in. In the maze there are small rooms and large rooms.

Small rooms can have holes in the ceiling that allow more light to shine in, but the holes are too small to escape through.

Large rooms have almost no light, and usually have stone pillars. Large rooms often have many hallways branching out, leading to small rooms, and looping back from the large rooms.

The enter and exit doors to the maze are made of aged, brittle wood, with old rusty and broken hinges. The doors are very heavy and require some effort to open and close.

The setting outside of the maze is either up to you, or it can be left unspecified.

Here's a quick guide to how to apply memories:

A character: if the player's memory is a character, they will find the character in the maze. The character appears to be dead in some way or another, and oftentimes will appear monster-like or distorted in some way. This is where the horror element can really come into play. The character will pursue the player as they escape the maze and become harder to avoid as the player gets closer to the exit. Whether or not the character is hostile towards the player depends on how they acted towards the player when they still remembered them. If the character is non-hostile, they can be confused when the player is scared and flees from them.

An object: if the player's memory is an object, they will see that object reappear and reoccur throughout the maze. As they get farther in the maze, other objects that the player is familar with can also appear. These other objects provide some sort of context or smaller side memories related to the main object.

An event: if the player's memory is an event, they will go through short, out-of-context flashbacks of the event as they navigate the maze. The more flashbacks they have, the more that the memory will piece itself together. As the player gets farther in the maze, they will also start to have hallucinations of the event.

There can only be one main memory in the maze.

The player has no concept of time in the maze.

Once the player enters the maze, their game has begun. They can't nope out.

Only one player can enter at a time, no buddies allowed.

MM can be applied to ANY fandom, au, or OC universe, and you definitely do not have to follow the canon of these base universes.
