Familiar Stranger

I ate as much as I wanted from my plate of eggs, but there was still plenty there for another person. So once again, I glanced around the house. Waiting for some one to wander past. For Jacob and his friend to come back saying they had forgotten something, but they hadn't. All the time I had spent eating, not a creature stirred through out the house. So I took the chance and quickly made my way over to the stairs.

Heading down the steps, two at a time, I found the familiar door and peeked inside. Nathaniel was looking my way having heard my footsteps, and upon seeing me, his face lit up in reaction.

I came inside, shutting the door behind me as I walked up. Trying and failing not to smile as I held up the plate.

"Thought you might like some breakfast." I offered as he looked at the plate.

"Thanks. That looks great." He spoke casually before making eye contact. "What's the catch?" He smirked, and I rolled my eyes.

"No catch this time. I didn't know if you'd been fed or not, that's all."

He nodded. "I have, just bread and water though. The eggs are definitely appreciated." He told me as I took the fork and fed him some. He smiled at the taste and ate a much as I fed him. Soon the plate was empty and he sighed in satisfaction.

"My compliments to the chef." He smiled after licking his lips. I giggled softly as he leaned back. "By the way, I didn't catch your name."

"Yeah, and I'd rather you not drop it. If Jacob hears you know my name, he'd end me." I said, hating the small shiver that snuck up my shoulders without permission. The blonde stared at me before nodding in turn.

"I understand."

Humming softly with a nod of my own, I set the now empty plate on the floor. "Do you get scrambled eggs often?"

"Sometimes." He said, somewhat vaguely as I straightened and tilted my head. He then nodded at me. "You're wearing that beanie again." I looked up as if I could see it before arching a brow at him.

"So that deal from yesterday still stands then?" I asked, watching him nod. Sighing softly, I pulled off my beanie. My hair fell down my back, still tied up in a ponytail as I lightly shook my head, holding my beanie in both hands.

"Happy?"

He smiled softly as I reached up and tightened my ponytail.

"So, why the fascination with my hair?" I questioned softly as he shuffled his shoulders against the wall.

"No fascination, I just think it's pretty. I also wonder why you hide it." He said casually as I folded my arms.

"Personal reasons."

"Fair enough."

"So, the eggs?" I questioned making him chuckle.

"We keep some chickens. So sometimes, but not always." He admitted as I inched a step closer. I don't know why I liked standing so close to him, but he didn't seem to mind.

"Do you have any other animals?" I asked, wanting to know more. He shrugged.

"What we can spare to keep alive. But if someone gets hungry, they're gone pretty fast. We can't keep much around camp."

"So you do live in camps." I realized aloud before biting my lip as his eyes narrowed. Even so, his lips curled cheekily upwards.

"Some of us. No one rogue is the same." He told me, washing away my assumptions. My curiousity had been satisfied with one sentence. Rogues were people, living the best that they could.

"Right. That makes sense."

"And to answer your questions, no. Not all of us are mean, starving, and loathsome. Just some charming folks, but those types don't generally keep in groups." He explained and I listened.

"What's it like, living outside of a pack. What sort of people do you live with?"

"Its comfortable enough, with nice enough people, as long as you don't make a fuss." He shrugged.

I wanted to know more, much more. But there was one question I needed to ask. I took a deep breath.

The question Jacob wanted answered, and the truth that could end up with Nathaniel dead. I wanted to know, but I didn't want Nathaniel to get hurt. He seemed nice. But that could all just be an act, couldn't it? Was he really nice? Was he telling me the truth? Or was he trying to lower my guard? He didn't act like this around Jacob.

Course, Jacob hurt him, I hadn't.

"Why did you attack us?" I asked softly, watching his reaction. He sighed, but didn't tense.

"That Alpha put you up to this?" He asked, but I shook my head.

"He's not Alpha yet, and he doesn't know I've been coming down here, remember? ...But I was attacked too. I want to know why."

Nathaniel looked into my eyes, and I stared right back. A small smile tilted the edge of his mouth and he nodded.

"Alright. But it's not what you think. We weren't after that hoity toity Alpha. We were after the mix breed."

I frowned in confusion. "You were after me?"

Puzzlement swirled in his eyes before realization dawned in them. "Oh, no, nono. Not you. The other one. The red head."

I felt my shoulders flinch, as if Nathaniel had just hit me with a rock. "You mean Terrence?"

"Wow."

I flipped around at the extra voice. Gasping at the sight of the red head standing just inside the cell. The door was shut behind him. I hadn't heard him come in, or even head down the stairs.

He took a step closer, speaking in his mild tone. "I didn't think you'd come after me."

A growl erupted from behind me as Nathaniel leaned forward against his shackles. His head leaned over mine, with his chest touching my back lightly. I found myself frozen where I was however, not moving away as Terrence stared at us.

"You killed a mother to be, and two small children. You really think there would be no consequences?" The blonde spat with hate, but for some reason the red head was looking at me.

"I was hungry."

"You're a monster you mean." Nathaniel corrected him as the red head's gaze stayed on me. I found myself shrinking away from him when he spoke to me.

"Monsters don't warn others."

My eyes widened as I straightened a little, though I didn't move from under Nathaniel's anger ridden form.

"You...you walked past the cell yesterday." I said as Nathaniel's growl died down. But his stare was still evident as the red head put his hands behind his back, ignoring the blonde. "Why did you warn me?"

His eyes bore into mine, as if searching, clawing for something he lacked. "Freaks shouldn't turn on freaks. Don't you think?" He shrugged almost helplessly before turning around and opening the door. "You shouldn't stay much longer." He told me lastly before leaving without a word to Nathaniel.

I registered his second warning to me before quickly grabbing the plate and fork from off the floor.

"I have to go-" I said turning back to Nathaniel, only to be cut off by the intense stare he was giving me. I didn't move, not wanting to severe eye contact when he spoke in a whisper.

"Stay away from him."

"Ok."

I agreed without hesitation as his eyes seemed to say something to me. But I couldn't register it.

He glanced down, making me instinctively bite my lip when he leaned a bit closer. Just a peck, a soft kiss on my lip, that I returned with another peck. It was a bit shaky, but I pulled away with bright red cheeks and quickly left, shutting the door behind me.

Sighing heavily, I headed up the stairs with a swift look around. But there was no one I could see.

I rushed into the kitchen, washing my plate in the sink. Then, with little else on my mind, I started back up to my room, chewing at my lips with a small smile.

Him worrying about me made me feel lighter than air, with a slight shaky feeling about hearing the truth. Terrence had been the one the rogues were after. He had killed 3 almost 4 of their camp members, and when confronted, he didn't try to deny it. He simply said he was hungry. What did that mean? What was his other half?

When I opened my door, I jumped at seeing someone sitting on my bed. Jacob stared at me as I recovered from the scare.

"What is wrong with you?!" I blurted, glaring at the Alpha's son as he stood. But he ignored my question, asking his own with folded arms.

"Where have you been?"
