Biana P.O.V

After the plantings, me and Fitz along with Keefe light-leaped to Everglen. I was crying still and Fitz had swung his arm around Keefe's shoulder to comfort him.

Keefe was now an orphan. His Mom was behind bars and would probably be dead soon due to lack of food and lack of rest. His dad had died in one of the final battles against the Neverseen. Keefe was basically an orphan now, so Mom and Dad had allowed him to stay at Everglen.

My throat felt thick and my eyes wet as I went into Fitz's room. He didn't even tell me to get out or leave.

I felt a jolt in my pocket and pulled out my Imparter. Song flashed across the screen. I smiled against my will. Could it be Tam calling me?

When Linh's face popped up, I was disappointed. "You okay Biana?" Linh asked softly. I saw that her eyes were shiny too.

I nodded, not trusting my voice. "That was brutal," Linh said. "I mean, why does the world have to keep taking the people we care about?"

"Maybe because their time was up," I said softly.

"Why did it have to be up so soon?" Linh asked quietly, looking down at her shoes.

"I don't know!" I responded, louder then I meant to. "Why are you asking me!! You're lucky! YOU didn't lose anybody that you really cared about!"

I wanted to take back the words as soon as I said them. Linh's face was streaked with hurt as she hung up quietly. I put my face in my hands, not caring that Fitz and Keefe were looking at me.

Suddenly, I felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked up. Keefe! My heart swelled without permission, then I fought to keep it down. I didn't need to be rejected again

"What Keefe?" I asked.

Keefe looked down at me and tried to regain his usual smirk, but failed. "Maybe you should call Tam," he said softly.

I didn't know what worried me more, Keefe not calling Tam Bangs Boy or Keefe's hair being flat and unstyled on his head. "Why?" I asked, ignoring my heart jumping at Tam's name.

Keefe shrugged. "It would make you and Bangs Boy feel better," he replied.

"How?"

"It would. Trust me."

I did trust Keefe. I trusted him almost more than anyone. Then, I heard shuffling and Fitz stood up.

"Biana, listen to Keefe. Call Tam. Keefe and I need to talk privately for a second," my brother said.

I pulled out my Imparter. "Tam Song," I said.

Tam's face immediately popped up on the Imparter. "Biana!" he said, surprised. "I thought it was Fitz calling me!"

"Why Fitz?" I asked.

Tam shrugged. "I mean, it said Vacker on it and I thought, no way my luck is good enough to have Biana calling me so it should be Fitz." Tam's face turned pink as he realized what he had said.

"You okay?" Tam asked.

I was about to say that I was totally okay, which was my answer for everyone who had asked me that question. But, as I looked into Tam's eyes, I realized I couldn't lie to them. "I don't know," I said softly.

Tam waited for me to continue. "I mean," I said. "I keep saying the wrong things and I made Linh upset just now." I saw Tam's mouth harden slightly, but the rest of his face didn't change, even at the mention of me hurting Linh.

"I can never do the right thing!" I said. "You know that I caused Kelser and Tiergan's deaths! I'm so stupid!"

Tam's face softened. "What happened at Rimeshire wasn't your fault Biana!" he said. "You did what you thought you should have done, and nobody blames you."

"I'm pretty sure that Dex does!" I said, crying. "He wouldn't even look at me after that!"

I looked up at Tam's silvery-blue eyes and I started to calm down a little.

"What Dex thinks is what Dex thinks. He'll forgive you after a while. Just, hang in there," he said.

"I will," I replied. Tam nodded and hung up.

They were right. Talking with Tam did make me feel better. But I wondered why...

Then, it hit me. No. No, no, no, no, no! I could not have a crush on Tam! Why did I always have crushes on the guys that were least likely to like me back? I was rejected by Keefe already, did I have to be rejected by Tam too?

But his eyes...His silvery-blue eyes. They were just a place of calm. A place I could stare into forever and not even care the last about what was happening.

"So," a voice said, knocking me out of my thinking. "It went well?"

I looked up. A dark cloak. I tried to yell for Fitz, for Keefe but I couldn't say a word. Suddenly, scenes poured into my mind. I froze as I realized what they were...
