SUMMARY:

Diana Walsh had everything. The perfect job, a loving husband and an adorable son. She loved her family with all of her heart and was never happier than whenever she was with them. But fate had another thing in mind for her future and when the dead rise and the world falls into chaos, Diana knew for sure the life she loved so much was lost, forever.

Together with her husband, son and her best friend Lori and her son Carl, they flee Atlanta and head out to find the so called safe zone. But all they find is death and so they decide to built their own safe haven. With a group of survivors they try their hardest to stay alive and rebuilt some of the comfort they once had.

But when Rick Grimes returns from the dead, the safety of the camp becomes jeopardized. And Diana is hesitant to place her life in his hands, especially when her husband wants nothing to do with his former best friend. Good people don't survive in the new world and so Diana doesn't hesitate to surrender herself to her demons when the people she cares about need saving.

Darkness is just an old friend anyway.

NOTES:

- Warning: this is a not a happy plot.

- Diana Walsh is an ex FBI agent. She met Shane when they were working on a case together. Unfortunately she was forced to stop when she got caught up in a case and started on a revenge path against a criminal who killed her partner. It took her a long while to recover from this (hence the phrase "darkness is just an old friend anyway"). Shane helped her get through it and when she over most of the trauma they started a relationship. Eventually they married and had a son, Thomas. You can add this information through flashbacks or as a chapter before the outbreak starts, that's up to you!

- Diana is a very determined, strong-willed person. She will always stand up for what she believes is the right thing and she doesn't take no for an answer. Just like Shane she isn't afraid to get her hands dirty, which leads her into very complicated situations at times.

- When the outbreak starts Diana, Shane, Thomas, Lori and Carl escape Atlanta together. In this story Lori and Shane have no relationship together. If you still want to stay as true to the original story line as possible you can make an OC that Lori went to for comfort instead of Shane. Or you can just not have her get pregnant at all. Or the baby can be Rick's. That's up to you.

- Diana honestly thinks they are safe in the camp but when Rick shows up and leaves to go tet Merle, with most of their guns and man power, the camp gets attacked and Tommy dies in the attack. He is bitten and Diana is forced to kill him. Shane blames Rick for his son's death, which in this story is the cause for the tension between them. Diana is heartbroken and determined not to let anything happen to Shane because she can't lose him too and so she slowly gives in to the darkness again, making dangeorus decisions she believes are the right thing for the group.

- There is a lot of tension between Diana, Shane and Rick going forward because they don't believe he's making the right decisions. Diana feels very protective over Carl because they spend a lot of time together and she doesn't want him to die like Thomas did.

- Going into season 2, Diana only gets darker, much like Shane. Even though the two love each other, they're destroying each other too and I think it would be realistic to have some tension in their relationship too. Diana knows what really happened with Otis, it's up to you if she was there or not, but even if she wasn't there she believes he did the right thing.

- When the farm is attacked, Diana is in the house. She goes to look for Shane, fighting her way through the walkers but she finds Carl and Rick instead. She demands them to tell her what happened to her husband but Rick's face says it all.

- It's up to you how you want this story to end. There are three options basically. Diana dies in the attack on the farm, or she makes it out, or you let Shane live. If she makes it out but you decide to kill Shane, she will be pulled down by her grief and you have to take your time healing her. You could give her another love interest eventually but even then it will take time for her to find her way to the light. If you go for the option to let Shane live, I imagine the two of them make it off the farm together but don't go looking for the rest of the group. Even though it will hurt them to leave Carl behind, they believe going on with the group is too dangerous. You could have them meet the Saviours or write a whole new storyline if you want to. The third option, which I think is the most "poetic" ending, is for Diana to die at the farm. But it's completely up to you :)

- This really isn't a happy story to write but I think it could be a very interesting thing to write a character that is a lot like Shane. A character that is pulled into the darkness of the world really fast and is essentially fighting a battle everyday to not let it consume her. So if you love dark characters and heavy topics, this is the plot for you!
