Lunch. The best time of the school day.

Kids burst through the metal doors of the cafeteria and they flood into the large room. Some students rushed to their assigned seats and start to unpack their lunch-boxes, while others raced to the lunch line, determined to be the first ones in line so they could receive their lunch early and they could have more time to eat and fill their empty stomachs.

A third grader sat by herself in the corner, eating her homemade sandwich while she waited for her friends that were standing in the never-ending lunch line. It was always like this everyday, Aria would eat alone while all her friends were in the lunch line.

As she munched on her grilled cheese sandwich, she noticed Caden, one of her classmates, sitting by himself at the table in front of her. She watched him curiously as he took a deep breath and opened his Star Wars lunchbox. He closed it a second later, a crestfallen look on his face. Aria stopped chewing.

Did he not have a lunch?

Caden fiddled with the handle of his lunchbox for a moment before raising his hand. A program assistant appeared beside him at once. He said something to her. She nodded before he got up and walked out the lunch room.

"He never has a lunch," one of Aria's friends said to her as she placed her tray down on the table and sat down. Her friend must've noticed her staring.

"How come I've never noticed?" Aria asked, mostly to herself. Her friend shrugged.

Aria frowned and pressed her lips together, thinking. She felt really bad. Caden never had a lunch, and she never saw? But more importantly, no one ever did anything? She glanced down at her ham sandwich. It was cut into two triangles.

She ripped the saran wrap that held the sandwich and wrapped the uneaten half in the plastic. She was about to get up and walk over to his spot when she stopped herself.

He was probably starving. One half of a sandwich wouldn't be enough.

                   Aria wasn't that hungry anyways.

She reached into her lunch box and pulled out her clementine. Then, with half a sandwich in one hand and an orange in the other, she walked over to where Caden's lunch box sat. She placed the food inside carefully. She noticed Caden walking through the doors, and she rushed back to her seat, hoping it didn't look like she was stealing something.

When Caden lifted his lunch box, he noticed it was heavier than before. He opened it curiously, and to his surprise, he saw food sitting inside.

He looked up and saw Aria eating the same kind of sandwich that was in his lunchbox. She caught his eye and smiled.

Caden was taken aback. She gave him some of her lunch? He glanced back and beamed at her, extremely grateful for the food in front of him.

"Thank you," he mouthed to her, a wide grin stretching across his face.
