she takes the pen

a story, unfulfilled, ink spilled on the page in black and white

and gold, a sky of golden stars---

and makes the stars shine.

she takes the pen

circles, underlines, bolds, italicizes, adds, subtracts, multiplies, divides

carrying out the infinite series of mathematical calculations

wielding her calculator of words, her mind

and rapidly punching in the numbers and letters

letting them spin out a complex, tangled graph of immeasurable beauty

until she can see the stars, shining bright.

she takes the pen

promises to be true to herself, himself, whoever she may choose to be

promises to search in the deepest corners of the world for what she must find

promises to give everything she has in hopes of receiving something in return

but she needs nothing, in the end

nothing but---

nothing but the stars shining in the sky.
