Lukai's POV
Oh Rhin the fox is awake. Ok, there is no way they aren't going to investigate, so I just have to get away with the fox. I'll tell Bo this will be another trial for him, recapture the fox and give me time to escape with her. I whispered the last part into one of the secrecy leaves I always keep with me and sent it away on the wind.
"Come on! You're staying with us until we decide to let you and your friend pass," the lead wolf snarled. Ok I have to buy Bo some time. I know, I'll lead them down a false path! Shaking out my coat, I ran up to them. "I think the rustling came from over here!" I barked, leading them just right of Bo's hiding spot in a briar thicket. The leader charged into the brush, not caring how much noise he made. So unprofessional. I'm glad I left the pack life with Bo.
Bo's POV
Ok, all I have to do is find another way to contain the fox and hope Lukai can buy me more time. I don't have my powers yet, so I can't use any of his tools. I felt the briars prick my skin. At least she's done struggling so much... That's it! If I can stop her struggling Lukai can carry her out! I squeezed tighter, feeling her fear rise even farther than before, before she stopped moving entirely. The wolves were no more than ten yards from the briar thicket that cloaked me in shadows. I waited, knowing Lukai would signal me at the right moment. He shook his fur, distracting the patrol, and I leaped out with a roar.
Lukai's POV
Bo exploded out of the thicket shocking the patrol. I rushed into the tangle of briars to find the fox unconscious. Wow, Bo can keep a cool head in a crisis. This is perfect! I dragged her out and draped her over me, looking over to check on Bo. He had taken out one wolf while he was still in shock, pathetic. "Stick in the mud!" I howled as I took off at a sprint, following the border of the wolf territory. The wolves paused, confused and about to give chase, when Bo took another down. Enraged, they turned and leaped back into the fight.
I can't believe they thought our code was an insult to them. 'Stick in the mud' means meet at the place the two-legs set up shelter when they come into the forest. Surely by now they must have worked out SOME kind of code. I was running downwind of them, so it was easy to smell the scent of blood on the air. Wait a second... That smells like Bo's blood! He must be taking some damage from them after all. He can take care of himself though, so I'm not worried. Picking up the pace, I readjusted... I think I heard one of the foxes from before call her Mia. May as well call her by her birth name.
I wonder if she can be convinced to help us... If not there's always the classic blackmail. Now, where am I exactly? Not recognizing the sights or smells of my surroundings, I paused forest and backtrack. Setting Mia down, I took her in. She was quite beautiful for a fox. Downy crimson fur with a whit bib and tail tip, jet black ears and legs. She probably had moat of the males falling for her back in the area claimed by Rhuan, possibly even a mate, though she was quite young for the latter.
I breathed in her scent, familiarizing myself with it. Vanilla Orchid, not easy for a traveler to keep their scent fresh and clean. Though she's obviously been out protecting the guinea pig for a while. Maybe it was like him and Bo; Bo adored Lukai and Lukai was able to use Bo to achieve his goals. Not the best friendship, but they were both happy and hot what they wanted. I felt something cold and wet on my nose. Rain. That's just great, exactly what I neede. Up ahead there was a clearing with stone tables, not the most ideal shelter, but it would do. I gently set Mia down and found some vines to tie her muzzle shut and her paws to the table. Tired and damp, I lay down and huddled against her for warmth. I'll get to Bo in the morning...
