Free led Kai away from Creed and Song and through some dimly lit pathways. The silence between them was unusual. Mainly, because she could sense that Kai wanted to tell her something, but was holding back. She decided to break the silence.

"Is something bothering you?"

"No..no-not at all. What made you think that?" Kai stammered.

"I don't know," Free whispered and she slowly looked away from him.

Kai was mentally scolding himself for being so nervous. "What's the worst that could happen?" He asked himself.

Clearing his throat, Kai asked, "Can I ask you something?"

Free looked at him puzzled, "Of course."

"How do you like being apart of the team?"

"It's all new to me, but I like the concept. Here in the society, we don't have teams but more like group mates. And the skills vary within the group. Like there are people here who do research, making charts on which areas of town the Shadows attack first. Then you have trainers, and then there are Shadowhunters of varying skill levels," Free explained.

"Was Creed in your work group?"

"No actually, Creed is becoming a very high profiled Shadowhunter, we have never been in the same work group before, but he is very well known. We became good friends as of late, especially since I am becoming a better hunter since being apart of Team Liberate."

"Song was really impressed when she told me that he interrupted one of her battles. She said that he has some serious skills."

"My grandfather was impressed on his use of tactics, Creed is a very physical fighter. So he drains his opponents mental energy then uses his fight skills to overpower them."

"But how does he get their amulet to change back, if he leaves them still able to hold a fist fight?" Kai asked.

"I've never seen him in battle, so you would have to ask him?"

Kai took a deep breath, "Do you think that maybe one day I could meet your grandfather?"

"Sure, I think that he would like to meet you. I believe that he would see more than what I see in you," Free sighed.

"What do you see in me?"

"A brave friend," she replied.

"I'm not brave," Kai whispered, "I am plagued with trivial fears."

"And, so you have fears, but regardless of if you are scared or not, you always try. You have the courage to make mistakes and try again. And you never stop trying. That's character, persistence and determination. That's a fighter, what separates the men from the boys. That's why I'm glad that you're my friend." Free was thankful that the pathways weren't well lit so Kai couldn't see the blush that began creeping on her face.

"Song was telling me something like that too."

"You know we are so young, and have gone through so much, it's bound to be scary, but we're still here. Life has taught me to pray and be hopeful. Like the world needs sun, the world needs rain. We have to search this darkness for our own beautiful light and once we find it, hold on to it. So everyone who had enough faith to carry a torch can have their light renewed. Although we are young, we owe our people this." Free explained.

"You're always so hopeful, it gives me a reason to look up, when things are down. Thanks. "

"I-I don't know what to say. No one has ever told me that before." Free smiled, feeling happy that her hopeful spirit had rubbed off on someone.

The two continued to walk along throughout the tunnels quietly talking about when the days of darkness would be over.

In another part of the tunnels, Creed was telling Song about the difference between everyday Shadowhunters and the SSS, Secret Society of Shadowhunters.

"Times weren't always like this, us running from them. But through the years, Shadowhunters would make discoveries about the Second Dimension, form little groups like your Team Liberate, but rarely got to see things through. By that I mean, that they usually got infected. See balance is so important. Everyone won't be able to be a professional Shadowhunter and because of that when one of us loses a mind war or just gets infected in general, there's no one to save us. The SSS is very cautious because this is the first time that the group has been able to stick together for twenty-five straight years. They have had a lot of hits and misses," Creed explained. He stopped talking as they came to a dark metal door. Creed looked at his wrist and typed something in the keypad. Suddenly the door opened and he lead her to a large room filled with books and pictures.

"What's all of this?" Song asked, trying not to trip over the clutter.

"My assignment, I've been working on for the last two years. The SSS have been trying to develop a new system, with hopes that we can drive the Shadows back to the Second Dimension."

"That seems tedious, from what I know, the Second Dimension is some kind of door. So even if you were to drive them back, what's to stop them from coming back out?" Song asked before continuing, "If they have been on a twenty-five year progressive run, why do they want to make changes?" Song inquired.

Creed smiled at her, "To your first question,we had actually solved that problem, if you remember, Shadows have been around for as long as we can remember, but over the last year things have intensified. We had placed two people up there as guardians, but with them gone things have gotten hectic."

He took a breath, "Now, to your second question, if it's not broke why fix it, huh? Well, it more of trying to be proactive and not just reactive. Hunters, are evolving. Once upon a time, such an evolution only occurred in certain bloodlines and it still does, but hunters in general are evolving, just like the Shadows. That's the importance of my work, to try and predict future changes from the past."

Song was about to ask him about the details of hunters evolving until she looked around the room and a picture on the wall of a young woman called her. She walked over, seemingly ignoring Creed's most recent statement, and touched the picture. Something stirred inside of her. The woman's hair was jet black and very long, her eyes were chocolate brown, and she had a beautiful smile.

Creed saw Song looking at the picture and asked, "Do you know her?"

"I'm not sure." Song replied.

"I don't remember her name, Candace, Cadence, or something like that. She was apart of the SSS for a some time, maybe ten years or so then she got married and had a baby soon after. A couple years later, she returned to do research and she was pivotal in helping pick the two people we had put in place to guard the Gate. They were actually in the same work group, remember I had explained the work group concept to you? So sad that she died, she sacrificed herself for the cause." Creed said.

Song began to have a strange feeling inside of her. Creed tapped her shoulder and said, "I'm a little surprised that you don't know her, she left something for you by name, but she didn't leave her name."

"What!"

"Yeah, when the SSS gave me my assignment, I had to clear this room up, I know it's still pretty cluttered, but you didn't see how it started. I learned a lot about some of our fallen members and came across something she left in a box for you. That's how I learned your name. That's why I wanted to find you, I wasn't sure if you knew something."

"Oh," Song whispered, feeling a little upset. She was under the impression that Creed thought highly about her as a Shadowhunter, but in reality she was helping him get his homework done.

Creed didn't notice how down Song had gotten as he passed her the small box with her name written in familiar handwriting. As soon Song touched to box she could feel a strong energy. She knew who that woman was.

"Thanks, I'll open it later." She told Creed.

Creed knew that whatever was in the box held a strong energy and he realized that Song knew who the woman was, but he did not pry her for answers because of the nature of the situation.

Song's eyes pulled her towards another picture of a man and woman. "Who were they?"

"Well they're outlaws now, but they were the Guardians of the Gate between the dimensions. Funny, I knew their son, he was apart of my work group before I officially became a Shadowhunter. Before they moved, we were very close friends," Creed answered. That was all Song needed to hear, because she knew the rest of the story. Everything seemed to be falling into place for her.
