Tuesday was generally very boring, so I didn't think I would miss anything fun. Besides, I felt excited about going to town alone. Students were generally not allowed to go outside during classes as many humans were around during the early hours of the evening. This made me a little nervous but I doubted anything bad would happen.

As soon as the wake-up bell rang, I let Bianca go downstairs by herself. Then I opened my closet and found a pair of black jeans, a white top and a black jacket. I pulled on my black boots and stuck a knife at the back of each for extra safety. Putting my hair in a ponytail, I shoved my phone in my back pocket.

I sneaked out using the same side door we had used for the party. I sped through the trees at top speed. The moon was bright tonight and the air felt cool. Soon, I reached Tresville. I took a deep breath and tried to slow down my reflexes to match those of humans.

I walked through the narrow streets of the town, enjoying myself. There were many humans around, but I didn't feel that worried. I had no wish to feed anyway.

There seemed to be a market was being held tonight. Food stalls, stalls selling cheap jewellery and other stuff lined the streets. I stood in the middle, drinking it all in. I went to a few stalls and tried the greasy food. It wasn't very good and left me feeling a little nauseous.

I felt my phone buzzing in my back pocket and saw I had several missed calls and unread texts from my friends. Not in the mood to answer, I put my phone on silent and shoved it in my back pocket.

I walked on and came across a woman who claimed she knew how to read fortune and tell the future. I went into her stall just for fun. She probably was a hoax. She looked up as I entered and smiled a toothless smile. Then she took my hands and began spouting out the usual nonsense- I would be very rich and lucky and marry a great man. I decided to humour her and went along with it.

Suddenly, her eyes darkened and a strong wind began to blow. She gripped my hands tightly and spoke in a low voice.

"Leave as fast as you can, Carthan. You are in grave danger."

She fell back. I got up quickly and hurried to her side. She seemed to have fainted but was still breathing. I propped her against the wall and slipped outside. My heart was hammering against my chest. The woman's warning had seemed real to me. And she had known I was a Carthan. I started walking as quickly as I could towards the outskirts of the town.

I felt a strange fear grip me. A hunter was out on the loose. What had I been thinking? I had left the safety of the school to wander about because I had been bored. For the first time, I felt how stupid I had been. I had to get back to the academy and I had to get back fast.

I had almost reached the forest when I saw him.
