Sonnet 86: The Poet
(Admonishments 13)

A work of nature far more fair than fairest
Should not debar my love thy highest treasure,
That all my praises, hopes and cares thou swearest
No more than lies, denying love's true measure!
My love's not measured by the fickle pledges
Of mortal breath that breathe hypocrisy;
The world's too full of lies, and each one hedges
The height of man's true worth in dignity.
Thy worth in love is measured through thy virtue
And not through sin, for virtue's found in truth;
And truth and love are things that never hurt you,
Although it hurts to say that you're a youth.
      So on my knees, I beg of thee to end
      This lie, to swear thy love and wrongs amend!
