Sonnet 88: The Poet
(Admonishments 15)

I'm met with stern defiance in his eyes,
Wherein I see the spell of my foul mistress
Working in his soul, mixing truth with lies;
His loyalty lies in the foul caress
Of her sweet touch, so captive to her whims
That I cannot break through her spell with rhyme,
Encouragement or reason—even hymns
Can little overcome her subtle crime
Over his captive heart. Unable to
Convince him of her hazardous connection,
I rest my eyes upon his sheet-clad view,
Fearing his beauty's but a false reflection
      Of his true self, a prince of night and darkness:
      Oh master-mistress, why art thou so heartless?
