Fred was terrified when George lost his ear. He was so certain that George was going to die that he refused to leave his side so George wouldn't die alone. He tended to him and stayed with him, even when he became delusional from blood loss, reassuring him of what was real and what wasn't, and comforting him when the things he saw frightened him. When George lived, he was relieved beyond words.
